Civil War is an extremely powerful, effective movie that thrusts you into the middle of an American civil war seen through the eyes of a war photographer. It’s brutal. It’s extraordinarily violent. The sound design is bordering on abusive. And if you watch it in IMAX you can reasonably expect to leave the theater with more than a little motion sickness. It is, however, excellent, with great performances from Kirsten Dunst as the older, jaded photographer and Cailee Spaeny as the reckless youngster new to the game. So see it. But we’d be very surprised if you decide to rush back for a second viewing.
Here’s our celebration of the wonderful, must-see movies where once is quite enough, thank you very much.

Princess Diana Police Investigations Explored By Channel 4 & Discovery+
The story of the two police investigations into the death of Princess Diana is to be told in a rare co-production for Channel 4 and Discovery+. With access to top detectives in the UK and France, most of whom are speaking for the first time, Sandpaper Films’ four-parter Investigating Diana: Death in Paris (working title) will examine investigations led by the French Brigade Criminelle in 1997 and UK’s Metropolitan Police in 2004. The People’s Princess’ 1997 car crash shocked the world and ignited a debate about how she died, one that is still being discussed in forensic detail today, riddled with conspiracy theories. Channel 4 will launch first in the UK and Discovery+ has taken second window outside the UK. “This utterly compelling series explores in forensic detail what happened in the investigations following the death of Princess Diana – what it was like for...

Based on the true story of a lone gunman who killed 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania, in 1996, Justin Kurzel’s drama is a complex study of a lethal misfit
At a crucial moment in this quietly harrowing drama from Justin Kurzel, director of Snowtown, Macbeth and True History of the Kelly Gang, a young man walks into a gun shop with a bag of money and walks out with an arsenal of firearms. What’s remarkable is how horrifyingly matter of fact the scene is, with its casual talk of throwing in ammo rounds and “nice” carrying bags. Yes, there’s a slightly sticky moment when the young man reveals that he doesn’t have a licence, but that’s circumvented when he agrees not to register his purchases. So the deal is done; hands are shaken, money is exchanged and lethal weapons are sent out into a world where no one is safe.

"Utterly compelling." Picturehouse in the UK has debuted a new UK trailer for the Australian film Nitram, an eerie an unsettling true story about a deranged individual. This first premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival last year, where Caleb Landry Jones won the Best Actor prize. The drama is about a young man named Nitram, and the occurrences leading up to the 1996 Port Arthur mass shooting on Tasmania (the worst in Australia) in their attempt to understand why and how the atrocity occurred. The title is a reference to the name of the actual person, following him in the last few months leading up to the incident. Caleb Landry Jones stars as Nitram, with a cast including Essie Davis, Anthony Lapaglia, Judy Davis, and Sean Keenan. The film opens in the UK starting July 1st, and is already playing in select US theaters right now (here's the US trailer). This...

Caleb Landry Jones, Judy Davis, Essie Davis and Anthony Lapaglia will star in Justin Kurzel’s Nitram, a feature film for Stan about Martin Bryant, the Port Arthur gunman who murdered 35 people and injured 23 others.
The film sees Kurzel once again working with writer Shaun Grant, with whom he collaborated on True History of the Kelly Gang and debut feature Snowtown, which depicted Adelaide’s Snowtown murders between 1992 and 1999.
Good Thing Productions’ Nick Batzias and Virginia Whitwell are producing, with Madman Entertainment handling theatrical.
Now shooting in Geelong, Stan’s press release announcing Nitram did not reveal what the film was about, mentioning neither Bryant or the 1996 massacre in Tasmania – only stating the project would “study one of the darkest chapters in Australian history.”
However, The Age broke yesterday that Landry Jones will play Bryant, Judy Davis and Lapaglia his parents, and Essie Davis a woman who befriends him. The...
