He grew up in a small town near Lake Constance, Switzerland. His father was a comptroller in the construction industry, and his mother was a grade-school teacher.
When he was around twelve, a Giacometti exhibition in Zurich made a deep impression on him. He began collecting postcards of famous paintings.
He studied at the University of St. Gallen, and majored in economics and social sciences.
