Toronto-based genre specialist Raven Banner has closed a raft of deals in Cannes on Jesse Haaja’s superhero film sequel Rendel: Cycle Of Revenge.
US rights have gone to Shout! Studios and other key sales have closed in Germany (Splendid), France (Program Store), Spain (Wild Duck), and Italy (Blue Swan).
Kris Gummerus stars as the eponymous masked vigilante who dismantles the evil Vala organisation after his family is killed, as a spital of violence awakens the ghosts of the past.
Sean Cronin, whose credits include Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, plays the villain Smiley. Pekka Lehtosaari wrote the screenplay.

Veteran film producer and distribution executive Avi Federgreen’s Toronto-based sales company Indiecan Entertainment International has unveiled its Cannes Film Market slate.
Leading the slate is “She Was Here,” a documentary that delves into the life of beloved child actress Heather O’Rourke, famed for her role in the “Poltergeist” and known for the line “They’re here.” O’Rourke’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 12. Director Nick Bailey explores O’Rourke’s untold story, featuring interviews with her “Poltergeist” co-stars Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams, as well as Heather’s mother and sister. The documentary is produced by Brian Pocrass, Reese Eveneshen and Federgreen.

Exclusive: Frontières Platform, the genre-focused event run by Fantasia and Cannes’ Marche du Film, returns to the French fest for another edition this year, with 13 projects selected to take part in the showcase, running July 10-11. Scroll down for the full list.
The event is technically taking place physically, as per Cannes’ commitment to staging an in-person industry event in July, but Frontières has informed participants that it does not encourage them to travel during a pandemic and that all pitches will be screened online. If participants do wish to travel to Cannes, however, the event will allow them to do so, and a representative of Frontières will be in attendance, restrictions allowing.

There is something uniquely American in the unashamed virtues and patriotism wrapped up in traditional Superhero films. It is this un-ironic earnestness that I admire but find impossible to emulate personally. Superman, with his endlessly positivity is too vanilla for me. Probably more importantly I am, deep down too sneering, too cynical to fully embrace or relate to the struggles of the invincible man with the shopping list of powers.
Speaking of heroes… lots of people like to root for John McClane in the original Die Hard as the consummate underdog. Even watching as a kid, I rooted for the actual underdogs of the movie,...

Producers Black Lion Pictures and Frozen Flame Pictures are planning an early 2019 shoot on Rendel 2, which sees Jesse Haaja return to directing duties. Raven Banner licensed Rendel in more than 60 countries.
“I can’t even describe how excited I am for this,” Haaja said of the ongoing saga of the masked avenger who fights a criminal organisation. “It was my lifelong dream to get Rendel to the big screens.

Rendel is styled as being in the vein of The Punisher and Spawn as a vigilante targets a criminal organisation known as Vala.
