It must be rough to revive a film franchise that offers no opportunity for mainstream merchandising via toys, lunchboxes, and backpacks. The lack thereof probably torpedoes a good many films that deserve to be made but just aren’t “commercially viable” due to a lack of avenues for alternate profit. Take Fame, for example. Back when the original film debuted there was a television spin-off that followed shortly thereafter. With the remake of last year, there are similar talks of an accompanying television series, but there’s also a full-court press into a new industry that didn’t possess nearly the steam that it does now: direct-to-dvd (or video, back then) workout features. This new incarnation of Fame has done just that, and well, the results are rather ho-hum.

The MGM remake of the classic, drama, musical "Fame" movie hit the theaters this weekend. The movie was ok for what it was, I guess. It had some pretty good performances, and dealt with issues that kids who want to pursue a career in the entertainment industry might face,as they make their way through it. It starred : Asher Book, Kristy Flores, Paul Iacono, Paul McGill, Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Kherington Payne, Collins Pennie, Walter Perez, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, Debbie Allen, Charles S. Dutton, Kelsey Grammer, Megan Mullally, and Bebe Neuwirth. "Fame" centered around a group of talented kids who made it into the New York City High School of Performing Arts, and followed them for their four year term.Basically it followed the kids as they struggled to find out which avenue they wanted to pursue, and how some of them probably wouldn't be good enough...

Surrogates Studio: Touchstone Rated: PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, disturbing images, language, sexuality and a drug-related scene. Starring: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames and Boris Kodjoe Directed by: Jonathan Mostow What it’s about: In the not-too-distant future, people use robotic surrogates to interact with the world. However, when two surrogates are destroyed - and their operators are killed in the process - the police open the first homicide investigation in years. It's up to Bruce Willis - and his full head of surrogate hair - to track down the killer and uncover the mystery of why the murders took place. What I liked: I've always liked these sort of off-season science fiction action movies. While they wouldn't survive in a tentpole summer release, Surrogates is like Demolition Man, Virtuosity, Paycheck and this spring's Next. They're fun action flicks, and they can also be thought-provoking. Surrogates is based on a graphic novel, and...

File this one under "Thanks for nothing, Shrub." That would be the really bulging file I keep on my desk. So what's the issue?
This week Huffington Post blogger Ryan Grim reported that a new book coming out about President George Bush includes the fact that Bush declined to denounce same-sex marriage in his commencement speech at Furman University in 2008 because he wasn't "...going to tell some gay kid in the audience that he can't get married."
No, he was just going to get elected by demonizing the gay kid, and every other 'mo in the country, by allowing henchman Karl Rove to orchestrate two of the most anti-gay presidential campaigns ever run in the U.S. Two campaigns the fueled a wave of constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage across America.
But, hey, Bush wouldn't actually deliver the bad news to the gay college kid himself because he's such a stand up guy.

Two days prior to the theatrical release of "Fame", the city of angels played host to a Los Angeles premiere for the musical drama. Black dominated the special screening event that took place at Pacific Theatres at The Grove as the usual red carpet was replaced with a black one to welcome the celebrities attending.
Some of the stars of the remake film opted to dress up for the premiere, while some others chose to go with a casual look. Naturi Naughton wore a shiny purple mermaid gown, Asher Book suited up in a slate gray suit completed with white sneakers, and Kay Panabaker was dressed in a Ports 1961 flowing, knee-length red and purple dress with beaded neckline. Collins Pennie, on the other hand, styled himself in black with a green jacket as a top off.

Wow, what a pointless remake.
I’m sitting here wracking my brain, trying to understand what could have possibly motivated the folks who remade the 1980 movie Fame.
Any updating they did was purely superficial. On the contrary, the original was far grittier, just as inclusive (if not more so, as I’ll explain in a minute), and gave you a much better sense of the emotional cost to a life in the arts.
And if the point was just to eschew reality and make an entertaining fantasy version of a school for the arts – a sort of High School Musical for older teens -- well, the 1980s Fame series was far more entertaining than this current movie too.
The only possible motivation I can see is money. But as all the instructors at the school in the movie say again and again, art must be “truthful” and “authentic” or there...

Truth be told, Naturi Naughton will be one of the few breakout stars from the "Fame" reboot. She plays Denise, a classical pianist with a dream. Alongside her is Asher Book as Marco, a singer/actor wannabe.
Kevin Tencharoen makes his feature film debut as a director working from a script by Allison Burnett ("Untraceable," "Resurrecting the Champ").
In our interview, Naturi and Asher talked about:
*** Their involvement with the film
*** Their characters
*** Irene Cara and Debbie Allen
*** The remake's history
Here you go and have fun!

In the original 1980 version of Fame, the gay character of Montgomery (Paul Crane) is a depressed, shy young man tortured by his sexuality. Given that nearly thirty years have passed since then — marked by huge strides in gay visibility and gay rights — it's to be expected that the remake of Fame would drop the tortured gay storyline for its gay teen dancer.
But the new version of Fame still has a gay character, right? Not according to Paul McGill (pictured below), the actor playing the part of Kevin, a student attending the performing arts high school in which much of the movie takes place.
During an exclusive interview with McGill, AfterElton.com asked about Kevin being gay. Said McGill, "Originally, in the original sides, in the original script, he was gay. But it’s not the case anymore. That's not in the movie. That’s false information, actually, that’s on your website.

Here comes the fall. And I’m not talking about the seasons. Normally fall is when you notice the blockbusters, and the quality of those blockbusters, drop a touch.
But then again, what did August do for you? I loved Inglorious Basterds … and there was some decent escapes for dates like Julie & Julia and The Time Traveler’s Wife. It seems I’m in the minority thinking District 9 is only “pretty good.”
So what can we expect from September? Mike Judge returns to live-action features with Extract. Our blockbuster leftovers give us Whiteout and Surrogates. Michael Moore will try for another documentary full of impact with Capitalism: a Love Story. And Fame will try to prove that it truly can live forever. I wonder if they’ll also learn how to fly (high). I’m pinning my hopes on The Informant! and that kooky, crazy comedian Matt Damon.
