Loosely based on real events, the unfortunately-titled Operation Carrot is thankfully far from the mashup of Bugs Bunny and Wallace and Gromit that it sounds like. It’s the kind of compact, tightly-focused story that resonates into all kinds of different areas -- in this case, into the secrets of history, into journalistic ethics, and into how power deliberately creates paranoia. So although though it’s set specifically in Uruguay in 2004, there’s something decidedly contemporary about Enrique Buchichio’s slow but compelling follow-up to his well-received debut Leo’s Room, which suggest that international fests are likely to take a nibble. It seems to me that people can become easily trapped – trapped in bad relationships as well as shadowy problems within themselves. They can become isolated metaphorically and literally. In Leo’S Room, we are shown something that many of us are already aware of: We are not alone. Still, loneliness and isolation can wickedly warp anyone. Many folks are depressed. Whatever the country, or economic status, modern life can still leave a person feeling totally alone. Even with cell phones and computers in every color, application, doodad and size for every human’s interest, many people just are feeling alone psychologically and physically. In some cases it is a chemical imbalance.
In Leo’S Room after his girlfriend breaks up with him due to his lack of emotional or sexual attention, Leo is having a plethora of confusing and conflicting thoughts. He spends too much time On-Line,...

Believe it or not my friends, tons of great films are made outside of the United States. To some, this is obvious, but the majority believe that most good films will end up at their local movie theater. Take it from this movie reviewer, the majority of garbage makes it to the big screen. If you're a loyal reader of mine, horror flicks are my bag. Within the last two years, the best horror flicks I've seen have come from outside the United States. So why this rant?
As film enthusiasts, one must broaden their scope in cinema and experience other products from all over the world. The Gasparilla Film Festival subscribes to this thinking and is bringing a variety of foreign independent flicks to Tampa Bay at the Tampa Museum of Fine Art. Taking part in the 2010 Global Lens movement is something I highly encourage. Full details can be...

Maria Beatty’s Boy in a Bathtub (top); Enrique Buchichio’s Leo’s Room (middle); João Gabriel Vasconcellos, Rafael Cardoso in Aluisio Abranches‘ From Beginning to End (bottom) Maria Beatty will be honored with a screening of Boy in a Bathtub at the Torino Glbt Film Festival – Da Sodoma a Hollywood (Turin’s Glbt Film Festival – From Sodom to Hollywood) on Wednesday, April 21. Ok I’m back from what seems a decade in Latin America. The most notable real life events come from seeing society’s rich and poor working side by side without seeming to be aware of one another. Days are filled with commerce in Buenos Aires and life in the night (outside of the night clubs) is filled with refuse left from the day and scavengers collecting (and eating!) all that is salvageable.
In Cuba, as the Cubans are fond of saying Castro has democratized poverty, the scale seems to have tipped upwards since my last visit in 2003 after which Bush pulled the plug on travel. It is now legal again under general licenses; Lax hosts a weekly charter as do Miami and New York.
Most notable film events in Buenos Aires’ Ventana Sur, a $3,000,000 event (extravaganza?) which I hope will yield enough business for it to be repeated, perhaps...

- Lots of Fall festival news today from New York, Toronto and Spain and I know what my first piece of Tiff coverage will be: Christopher Doyle's "Picture Start" (Doyle (Happy Together) reconsiders how images evolve before the director’s call to “action” and what happens to them after the “cut.” Doyle superimposes directives from traditional film leader on to the processed still film and filmmaking images he has created during his extensive career. Curated by Noah Cowan at the Indexg, 50 Gladstone Avenue in Toronto. Here is a look at eight and 1/2 news items that we didn't have enough time to cover but are worth mentioning here for August 11th... 1. Tell Me Where you are Josh!Blair Witch creators looking to make a sequel. Must be out of money and ideas. (Via Slashfilm.com) 2. Charlie, Sophie and Giamatti Cold Souls director and star on Charlie Rose last night. 3. San
