Drought, unemployment, unstable weather, ruined crops, decimated farmers: In retrospect, the devastating Dust Bowl of the Thirties sounds like a precursor to America in the Covid-19 era. Aptly, the album that chronicled those hard years in the Southern Plains in real-time is making a comeback of its own.

“Live From Here With Chris Thile,” the weekly radio show that began as a continuation of “A Prairie Home Companion” before taking on its own name and identity, has been canceled, American Public Media Group announced Tuesday.
The St. Paul-based company blamed the economic effects of the Covid-19 for that and other cuts that resulted in 28 employees being let go.
Thile, the dexterously multitalented member of the Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek who took over “Prairie Home Companion” from Garrison Keillor in 2016, tweeted about the end of his four-year run as host.
“Not one live broadcast has gone by where I didn’t thank my absurdly lucky stars for your wide open ears and hearts,” Thile wrote. “Over the weekend, I was informed that American Public Media will no longer be producing the show. There’s a whole lotta content out there these days, and that’s putting it mildly. IndieWire does its best to sort the jewels from the junk and keep readers up to speed on the film, TV, and digital media that’s worth their time, but not even the most avid consumers of pop culture can find room for it all on their radars. The sheer volume of stuff has made it almost impossible for people to even keep tabs on the stuff they know they want to watch; at a time when a week can feel like a year, that great new indie you read about on Monday can feel like a distant memory by the time you finally get a chance to go see it on Friday.

“What’s the matter with me?” Jenny Lewis sings on her latest single, “Redbull & Hennessy.” On her first solo offering since 2014’s The Voyager, Lewis offers a darkly suggestive tale of dissolution and desire. Riding a sparkling Seventies pop-rock piano riff, Lewis’ narrator second-guesses herself into a haze of liquor and regret.
Lewis has long been a master at juxtaposing candy-sweet melody with ominous narrative (see 2014’s “Head Underwater,” or Rilo Kiley’s classic 2014 “Portions for Foxes”), and her latest is no exception. Lewis’ bright vocal betrays an unadorned vulnerability...

But that didn’t stop the roots band comprised of Chris Thile (mandolin), Gabe Witcher (violin, drums), Noam Pikelny (banjo) and Chris Eldridge (guitar) and Paul Kowert (bass) from covering a song with which they are mutually obsessed: Tame Impala’s gauzy 2016 single, “Let It Happen,” for the Spotify Singles series. “A Prairie Home Companion” is dead. The long-running variety show, once synonymous with public radio and a staple of relaxing weekend drives, is losing its name after former host Garrison Keillor was fired by Minnesota Public Radio on Wednesday over accusations of “improper behavior.” Mpr announced the rebrand of the 43-year-old weekly program in its statement on Keillor’s firing, saying the show, currently hosted by Chris Thile, will continue under a new title. Mpr will also stop rebroadcasting past episodes of “Prairie Home Companion” hosted by Keillor. Also Read: That Time Matt Lauer Dropped His Pants in Front of Female Co-Hosts in Cringeworthy.

Garrison Keillor, host of radio programs “A Prairie Home Companion” and “The Writer’s Almanac,” said Wednesday that he had been fired by Minnesota Public Radio over allegations of inappropriate behavior, the Associated Press has reported. Keillor informed the AP of his firing in an email. He did not include details of the allegations, but said it was “a story that I think is more interesting and more complicated than the version Mpr heard.”
“Mpr takes these allegations seriously and we are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful and supportive work environment for all employees and everyone associated with Mpr,” the station said in a statement. Mpr also said it is ending its business relationships with Keillor immediately, including “distribution and broadcast of ‘The Writer’s Almanac’ and rebroadcasts of ‘The Best of A Prairie Home Companion.'”

National treasure Dolly Parton turns 71 on Thursday, Jan. 19. There’s a long list of reasons why Dolly is forever No. 1 in our hearts — her wit, charm, benevolence — but first and foremost, it’s her music. As she’s grown into more of a cultural icon and celebrated personality, it can occasionally be difficult to remember that Parton is primarily an astonishingly talented musician. So we scoured the YouTube archives for some videos to prove just that. Enjoy.
“Appalachian Memories,” 1985:
Parton announces that the next song is “for all the hard-workin’ daddies” out there, which elicits a loud “wooo” from a member of the audience.

The ripples extended far past the shores of Lake Wobegon when Garrison Keillor recorded his final episode of A Prairie Home Companion on July 1. In 2015, announcing his decision to step down, Keillor, 74, marked mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile as his successor.
Though Thile, 35, was a frequent guest on the show, he initially struck some as an odd choice. Thile rose to prominence with indie-bluegrass group Nickel Creek and has made a name for himself both with his own alt-leaning bluegrass group The Punch Brothers and as a highly-sought after collaborator for other instrumentalists like double bassist Edgar Meyer and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Radio icon Garrison Keillor has signed off for good. After 42 years as the host of A Prairie Home Companion, 73-year-old Keillor hosted his final episode to a full house of 18,000 at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday. Even President Barack Obama called in to wish the host a happy retirement and praise the show. "One of the reasons I miss driving is that you kept me company," the president told Keillor in the broadcast which aired Saturday, according to the New York Times. "A Prairie Home Companion made me feel better and more human." Other than that call, the variety show kept to its normal routine,...

A concert hall acquires magic slowly, as memories and music percolate into the walls. The process is fickle: Audiences and musicians revere certain shabby rooms, while other, more serviceable spaces remain generic receptacles. National Sawdust, a deluxe live-music pod floating inside an old brick box in Williamsburg, opened Thursday. Within minutes, it was already dispensing experiences of the kind that lodge in the mind: the vocalist Theo Bleckmann threading a Handel melody through buzzing clouds of electronic dissonance, Foday Musa Suso weaving a tapestry of kora patterns around Philip Glass’s piano, the Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq emanating walrus roars and eldritch howls. If that sounds like a lot of territory to cover in one night, consider it a preview of the range to come. The programming is thick with music, dizzyingly varied, directed not to one constituency but many.My first impressions of National Sawdust were dominated by Chris Thile.

Saturday night was a perfect summer evening for free Americana music at Lincoln's Center Damrosch Park as part of the Annual Roots of American Music, Americanafest NYC. The evening featured two of the genres rising stars. The headliners played two sets with the first half of the set featuring mostly original tunes by former Nickel Creek members Sean and Sara Watkin's new band The Watkins Family Hour. They and their extraordinary band entertained a robust crowd of New Yorkers and tourists alike. One of my favorite songs of the evening was their beatiful take on the Grateful Dead's "Brokedown Palace." And co-vocalist Fionna Apple's original song "A Mistake" was quite moving. Yes, she's one of the members of this band.
The second part of the set was a full-on tribute to Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited performed in its entirety by the band -- guitarist/vocalist Sean Watkins, fiddle/vocalist Sara Watkins,...

Welcome to Lake Wobegon, the little town that time forgot and the decades cannot improve. These words must be running through Chris Thile’s mind right now. The young mandolinist and bandleader from California is set to replace Garrison Keillor, the town crier for the fictional Minnesota hamlet, as the host of "A Prairie Home Companion," the public-radio show that you probably haven’t listened to since you were a kid. It hasn’t changed much since those days, either, and that’s the show's biggest challenge: Can it be improved upon, when by now it’s mostly been forgotten, especially by young listeners who jeer at its heartland humor?Since 1974, "A Prairie Home Companion," a longstanding public-radio staple on family road trips, has stubbornly stuck to its original format — a variety show and champion of the dying art of old-time live radio. In 2006, it was the subject of a...

Earlier today, Alexandre Desplat was a rather surprising winner for Best Film Music at this year's BAFTA Awards in London for his work in Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Well, it's a great day for the prolific composer as he has just won a Grammy for the score as well, in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media Category. Given the film's early-year release date, though, Desplat was mostly contending with 2013 films. Christophe Beck was nominated for "Frozen," while two of last year's Oscar nominees, "Gravity" (Steven Price, who won the Academy Award) and "Saving Mr. Banks" (Thomas Newman) were in there as well. The only 2014 film in competition was "Gone Girl," and alas, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross deferred to Mr. Desplat on this one. Does that signal some clarity in the Oscar race? Not necessarily. But the film is obviously helped by being, in all likelihood,...

'There's nothing more foolish than a man chasing his hat," says a character in the Coen brothers' 1990 movie Miller's Crossing. If Inside Llewyn Davis, the latest from the filmmaking siblings, is any indication, Joel and Ethan Coen have apparently changed their opinions on the subject: There's actually nothing more foolish than a man chasing his cat.

"Merry Christmas, y'all. #BlackberryFarm #hitched," Coffee wrote on Instagram Monday, along with a shot of herself posing with her new hubby near a Christmas tree. The actress went on to post a picturesque shot of herself walking towards the aisle at the rustic resort where they wed, revealing a glimpse of her ivory-hued, lace wedding gown. Adalind might be having some troubles in love and romance on "Grimm," but the woman behind the villain is having no such issues. Claire Coffee reveals on her Instagram that she and her boyfriend of two-and-a-half years, Chris Thile, tied the knot on Dec. 23.
"Merry Christmas, y'all. #BlackberryFarm #hitched," she posts along with the above photo.
Coffee walked down the aisle in a 1937 vintage lace wedding dress that she picked up from a boutique in Portland, Ore. (where "Grimm" is filmed). Thile wore a custom-made Against Nature suit.
As Coffee tells Us Weekly, only 20 guests attended the ceremony, which was held in the Smoky Mountains at "gorgeous and rustic" resort Blackberry Farms. Coffee's sister Abbie Coffee was officiant. As Thile is lead singer of Punch Brothers, he and Coffee had Bon Iver guitarist Rob Moose play Bach on the violin as the bride walked down the aisle.
