Back when Unfriended was still going by the title of Cybernatural, director Leo Gabriadze said he came onto the project because he was attracted to the story’s subject matter. Nelson Greaves’ script demonstrated how personal harassment had since changed in the digital age; in particular those younger people whose torment went beyond the classroom. The internet had not only made a bully’s reach greater but also unavoidable. And in true horror fashion, Unfriended provided an unsettling portrayal of victimhood as well as sadistic retribution from beyond the grave.
Unfriended immediately broke tradition by staying close to home as opposed to traveling to the deep, dark woods or anywhere else teens tend to go and die in horror. More unusual was the unexciting premise of these characters video-chatting all night instead of meeting in person at an ominous social event of some kind. After years of critics reproaching the...

After finding his family murdered by vagrant squatters, an ex-military operative and survivalist is hired by the man who bought his land to watch over the acreage and protect it from invaders. When the new landowner’s daughter arrives for a weekend getaway with her friends, the trip turns deadly when they discover the caretaker’s dark secret – rather than driving off trespassers, he’s hunting them in cold blood.
A group of college kids on spring break, driving out to the middle of nowhere to stay for a holiday of fun filled fun? Must be a horror film then! Despite starting like so many other films in its genre, Desecrated does, thankfully, provide an interesting viewing experience once it gets going. Ben, played by Gonzalo Menendez,...

We return to the 2015 horror Unfriended, and how it and other films explore the dark side of social media...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Unfriended
Unfriended is one of those horror films that becomes less effective the noisier it becomes. Released across America by Universal last year, the film's a twist on the old teen-slasher format, so of course there’s lots of screaming, stalking and violent death. But these scenes of bloody pay-off are a distraction from Unfriended’s quieter moments - for its here the movie's true power lurks.
At a time when the found-footage genre is in desperate need of reinvention, Unfriended finds an ingenious twist on the old first-person, shaky-cam sub-genre. The entire movie takes place on the flickering laptop screen of its protagonist, Blaire (Shelley Hennig). We’re subjected to an initially dizzying array of opening and closing windows, as Blaire...

If you spend much of your working or leisure time staring at small computers and tablets, a movie in which the action unfolds on web browser pages, Skype and Facebook in real time might not seem like an appealing prospect. The six main characters here aren't very likeable, either – brattish teenagers from Fresno, California, who all knew a certain Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman).

There’s little less compelling than a vague evil spirit with loosely defined powers doing random “scary” things as required by the script. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
A bunch of teens group-chatting online find themselves e-tormented by the evil spirit of a classmate who was bullied into suicide exactly one year earlier. They can’t just log off and shut down because, well, evil spirit is evil, and has supernatural powers and stuff. Unfriended isn’t so much a movie as a monitor mirror for Blaire’s (Shelley Hennig) Mac as she tries to memorialize the Facebook page of dead Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), watches the YouTube video that drove Laura to kill herself, Googles to find out what you should do when the departed try to chat with you online (“Do not answer messages from the dead!

Horror movie Unfriended puts together a successful case for turning your computer off...
Horror movies have been struggling to come to terms with the internet for a while now. The familiar scene where a character heads to the library to check out a book on the supernatural and find a way to ward off the ghost in their home is slowly being replaced by a scene where a character fires up an off-brand search engine to look up that all-important ritual. But characters in movies rarely spend as much time on the internet as we do, because it’s not particularly thrilling to watch someone sitting at a keyboard.
Unfriended might change that, though.
Borrowing techniques from found footage movies like Paranormal Activity, the focus here never shifts from a computer screen. It’s been a year since Laura (Heather Sossaman) killed herself because a cruel video of her passed...

Unfriended is a horror film set entirely on someone's social media feeds that unfolds solely on one laptop screen. Whatever next? Attack of the Killer Emojis? Nightmare on Elm Street: Meme Warriors?
Such presumptuous cynicism about a film best described as 'streaming footage' is understandable given the abundance of abysmal 'found footage' horror flicks in recent times. Yet these fears are quashed by the skillful execution of a surprisingly fresh storytelling form. For Unfriended is innovative, scary and smart, capturing the neuroses and pressures on today's youth within the claustrophobic confines of the digital age. It does for Skype what The Blair Witch Project did for forests.

In the latest Blumhouse Productions film, Unfriended, Heather Sossaman plays Laura Barns, a popular high school girl who commits suicide after an embarrassing video of her at a party gets around. A year later, a group of friends gather together online for a conversation on Skype, but they soon find that they have an uninvited guest who has access to Laura’s Facebook account. From there everything goes haywire, as the teens try to discover who, or what, is terrorizing them.
At the recent La press day for the film, I had the chance to sit down with Heather and discuss her role here. We spoke about how involved she was in the production, how Laura’s death was filmed in several different ways, and making the transition from being a child actor to an adult one.

There’s something for everyone this week, with everything from a Kevin James comedy to an identity theft mystery hitting Cineplex screens.
Cinema’s most famous mall cop, played by Kevin James, is back again in Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, which finds Paul Blart hitting the streets of Las Vegas. Hilarity ensues, naturally.
If you’re looking for something creepier this week, Unfriended is your movie. Starring Heather Sossaman, this horror flick tells the tale of a haunted chat room that wreaks havoc on the lives of its users.
To lose the horror but keep the drama, check out True Story, starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, and Felicity Jones. In a rare dramatic turn, Hill plays a reporter whose identity is stolen by Franco’s accused murderer. This aptly named movie is indeed based on a true story.

USA, 2014
Unfriended is the most ingenuous ‘contained thriller’ to come along in some time. Sadly, it doesn’t work nearly as well as a horror film, relying on the same tired jump scares to punctuate its well-constructed suspense. Director Levan Gabriadze makes everything refreshingly barebones and tech-savvy for maximum realism. The timely nature of its subject matter, cyber-bullying, and its clever premise keep Unfriended entertaining, even if we don’t logoff completely satisfied.
One year ago, High School junior Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman) killed herself after an embarrassing YouTube video resulted in relentless hazing. Now, on the anniversary of her death, six of her friends are terrorized during a Skype chat by a malicious browser claiming to be Laura. If any of them logoff without Laura’s permission, they all die. It’s an elegant premise, but can it sustain our attention for 80 minutes?...

Face to Face: Gabriadze’s Topical Mutation of Technological Terror
How effectively chilling it is may be arguable. But there’s no denying that Levan Gabriadze’s English language debut Unfriended manages to be clever and somewhat topically meaningful in the age of cyberbullying on social media apps that have chained humans unwittingly to being constantly recorded, in some sense, at nearly every waking moment. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov, the film premiered as Cybernatural (too kitschy for the cool kids) at the 2014 Fantasia Film Festival, its fascination with and deliberate technological framing manage to meld found-footage aesthetics with the attention span of the real-time generation. Screenwriter Nelson Greave’s plot feels kind of similar to Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s creepy 2001 internet ghost film Pulse (which got a Us redo in 2006), but manages to keep an adept, impressive focus on all the action taking place from the perspective of one character’s home screen.

The trolling is coming from inside the house! Mere emojis can't capture the plugged-in joys of the first hour or so of haunted-internet teen flick Unfriended, which knives with dexterous wit The Way We Live Now. Here's a clutch of horny high school dopes hanging out on Skype, getting doxed to death by what seems to be the vengeful ghost of Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), a young woman who committed suicide a year before. (She had been cyberbullied.)
We see this play out exclusively through the screen of another young woman's laptop: Blaire (Shelley Hennig) indulges in amusingly listless sex-chat with her boyfriend, Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm), scored to songs from the Spotify account she occasionally clicks up from the taskbar. Sometimes, after a scare, she'll Google...

This April revenge comes online in the new cyber-slasher film Unfriended. MTV launched the new trailer for the horror film recently (see above). And now, thanks to Universal Studios, the film finally has an official release date set for April 17, 2015.
Unfriended, you may recall, was originally called Cybernatural as it made its way through the genre festival circuit. The death-by-Skype tale of a group of friends being stalked online on the anniversary of their clasmate’s death looks to breath new life into the found footage genre and give everyone a reason to stay offline in the near future. For my money, this looks intriguing enough to give a look as something that could be a bit more enjoyable than the latest offerings in the field (I’m looking at you endless Paranormal Activity films).

One year ago, Laura Barnes (Heather Sossaman) decided to commit suicide due to ridicule received over an embarrassing video of her passed out at a party. Six of her classmates were especially horrible in their treatment of her, as they were unpopular and Laura was the most popular girl in school. Tonight, those same six classmates have decided to get together to talk with one another via Skype, but are ill-prepared when an uninvited seventh person logs onto their Skype chat and shows that they know quite a bit about the prior year’s events. The unknown person threatens the group and states that if they log out or stop talking, [ Read More ]

“Online, your memories last forever… but so do your mistakes.” The deceptive safety of the screen between teens and the online world is shattered when a malevolent entity crashes a Skype session between six high school friends, forcing them to commit gruesome, self-inflicted acts of violence in front of the computer camera. Going viral gets vicious in Unfriended, as shown in the film’s newly released trailer and poster.
“While video chatting one night, six high school friends receive a Skype message from a classmate who killed herself exactly one year ago. At first they think it’s a prank, but when the girl starts revealing the friends’ darkest secrets, they realize they are dealing with something out of this world, something that wants them dead.”

Not as scary as Unfollowed, the Twitter-based shocker we’re working on, but still packing more than a shiver or two is Unfriended, a horror-thriller that boasts a new trailer set around Skype and social media. Click below to take a look at this antisocial network. Preying on social media insecurities (and lives) of teenagers, is a mysterious stalky figure hunting bloody vengeance for a viral video that led directly to a suicide a year earlier. Is the girl who killed herself, a despised bully called Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), back from the dead or is this the work of some other crazed lunatic with superb tech skills? Either way, “billie227” has gory payback in mind. With Timur ‘Night Watch’ Bekmambetov and Jason ‘Blumhouse’ Blum the driving forces behind it, this one isn’t short of horror pedigree. The film’s new poster sells its concept fairly neatly. Unfriended makes...

The suspect has marks on his wrists showing he was bound and tazer marks on his neck. A couple make small talk at dinner, interspersed with flashes of what is about to befall them. Their home is invaded and the husband is killed presumably during the attack. It was apparent their marriage is over. Flack (Eddie Cahill) says the wife called for help which must have been a feat itself considering she was bound, gagged and in the bedroom. There were two intruders and both wore ski masks, what we'd call balaclavas. The daughter Megan, (Heather Sossaman) was at the movie theatre. Mac (Gary Sinise) questions all the houses in the neighbourhood to find out "why the attackers chose this one?" Lindsay (Anna Belknap) processes the Cs as we get more flashes of the events from the night. She finds a ski mask under the husband, Ron's (Vincent Ventresca) Db and the empty box that was delivered. Jo (Sela Ward) finds a hair from a slashed painting.
