The estate of Tammy Wynette’s fifth and final husband, George Richey, has sued Showtime and one of Wynette’s daughters over the “villainous” portrayal of Richey in the 2022 miniseries George and Tammy.
Richey died in 2010, 12 years after Wynette’s 1998 death. A year after Richey died, Georgette Jones — the daughter of Wynette and fellow country legend George Jones — published a book titled The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George that made significant accusations against Richey, including that he allegedly destroyed a Wynette will that would have left...

The family of Tammy Wynette’s fifth husband George Richey has filed a lawsuit against Showtime, alleging that the network’s George & Tammy limited series disparaged Richey as a “villain.”
The suit was filed, our sister site Variety reports, on behalf of Richey’s wife Sheila Slaughter Richey and their daughter Tatum Keys Richey. (George Richey died in 2010.) The suit says that George & Tammy depicts Richey, played by Steve Zahn, “as a devious husband who abused Wynette and Richey’s prior wife, facilitated and encouraged Wynette’s addiction to prescription painkillers, and engaged in financial and managerial manipulation of Wynette.

Showtime has been hit with a lawsuit over “George & Tammy” by the estate of country star Tammy Wynette’s fifth and last husband, George Richey. His heirs contend that the critically acclaimed miniseries disparaged Richey as the “villain” of the tortured love story between Wynette and George Jones, in violation of a previous non-disparagement agreement with Georgette Jones, the daughter of the titular couple and a key participant in the series.
Georgette Jones is not named as a defendant; only Showtime is. But because she was a consulting producer on the miniseries, as well as being the writer of the memoir that was the basis for the script, the lawsuit claims that the 2022 release of “George & Tammy” represented the network’s “tortious interference” in a 2015 settlement agreement the estate had made with Jones not to defame or disparage Richey, played by Steve Zahn in the series

(Updated with Showtime statement) Tammy Wynette had a huge hit in 1968 with “D-i-v-o-r-c-e,” but today the family of the legendary country singer’s fifth and final husband has taken Showtime to court to break up their relationship with George & Tammy.
Citing an alleged violation of a five-year old Non-Disclosure Agreement signed by Georgette Jones, the estate of songwriter George Richey want a wide variety of damages from the cabler. Richey’s fourth and final wife Sheila Slaughter and offspring Tatum Keys Richey also want the award winning 2022 miniseries pulled off streaming because “the Series conveys a negative and disparaging depiction of Richey.”
That’s the polite and legalese version of the way the suit says the self-described George & Tammy “villain” was presented.
“In summary, the Series depicts Richey as a devious husband who abused Wynette and Richey’s prior wife, facilitated and encouraged Wynette’s addiction to prescription painkillers, and...

When costume designer Mitchell Travers first heard about “George and Tammy” he was busy working with star and Emmy nominee Jessica Chastain on another Tammy project: “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
“Every actor is so different and I’m sure everyone on this panel can speak to the different process that we get to experience with actors,” Travers, an Emmy nominee for the Showtime series, tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Costume Designer panel. “For whatever reason, Jessica and I aligned on our process. It’s a very similar approach that we have. I like to get the actor dressed in the morning in the same way that a human being gets dressed. So I don’t like to just deliver that one costume that’s exactly right. I like to sort of live with them as a living, breathing person,...

Ordinarily, Jessica Chastain would be launching her Phase 2 Emmy campaign for her first Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series in “George & Tammy” (Showtime), in which she stars as country singer Tammy Wynette. I spoke to her on the phone just before the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee released a formal announcement of a strike — with no Emmy campaigns allowed.
She had also been planning to attend some fall festivals to promote “Memory,” the new Michel Franco movie with Peter Sarsgaard. “I am definitely pro-union,” she told IndieWire. “There’s huge innovations in our industry, content has been incredible, streaming and amazing technology have made huge steps, and quickly. Sometimes fear can be just as strong a motivator as love. That was the case for Showtime’s George & Tammy music producer and engineer Rachael Moore.
Under the influence and recommendation of musical legend T Bone Burnett, who served as a consultant on the Showtime series, Moore took the leap of faith. “He’s a dear mentor of mine,” Moore said about her relationship with Burnett. “I was a protégé of his, he really encouraged me to take this one, and I did.”
But what really made her say yes? “I had to – I couldn’t say no,” she said. “I was scared, so I had to.”
As a longtime resident of Nashville, aka the Country Music Capital of the World, Moore felt she was obligated to be a part of a series that spotlighted one of the biggest power couples in the genre’s history.

As Showtime’s new limited series “George and Tammy” lays out, George Jones and Tammy Wynette may have had a messy personal life, but they made beautiful music together. Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain play George and Tammy, respectively, in a musical drama that’s filled with, surprisingly, a lot of facts. (It might not be that shocking considering it’s based upon their daughter Georgette Jones’ own memoir.) Creator Abe Sylvia’s six-episode series isn’t afraid to show the toxic love between the pair, as well as their individual high and low points.
But with a series like this, liberties are of course taken. So what’s real and what’s fiction?
Was George and Tammy’s first meeting that disastrous? (Possibly) Fiction.

Above all else, Showtime’s “George & Tammy” limited series was charged with getting two things right: the relationship, and the records. Cut any creative corners on either the music or the portrayal of the marriage, and the series might have been shamed by all of Nashville and the country-loving world at large. So far, the series has gotten a lot of love and credit for standing by the truth of George Jones and Tammy Wynette from those who know either the story it’s portraying or the nuts and bolts of the classic solo and duo recordings that are being recreated… in their entirety, and not crammed into medleys or montages, it’s worth noting.

Limited series “George & Tammy” delivered a solid opening for Showtime and two other Paramount outlets in its Sunday debut.
In total, the premiere airing across three nets — Showtime, Paramount Network and CMT — brought in 3.3 million viewers. The series, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, stars Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain as married country music superstars George Jones and Tammy Wynette.
With the other Paramount platforms factored in, the “George & Tammy” premiere marked a high for a Showtime original series in multi-platform era.
” ‘George & Tammy’ made history as the most-watched Showtime premiere ever, thanks to the mesmerizing performances of Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime & Paramount Media Networks.
The remaining five episodes of the series will air exclusively on Showtime. Paramount and other conglomerates have been experimenting with amplifying high-priority original series projects with multiple airings across streaming, broadcast and cable platforms.

George & Tammy, starring Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon, premiered Sunday with 3.3 million Live+Same Day linear viewers across Showtime, Paramount Network and CMT. Originally produced for Spectrum Originals with a second window on Paramount Network and Paramount+, the music drama was recently picked up by Showtime after Spectrum pulled away from original series.
MTV Entertainment Studios, which is producing the show, calls this the most watched premiere in Showtime’s nearly 50-year history but that refers to the combined viewership across the pay cable network as well as the simulcast on the two basic cable nets. No viewership on Showtime only, which would be comparable to previous premieres, is being provided.
Future episodes will air exclusively on Showtime on-air, on demand and streaming.

A pair of golden performances elevates the standard entertainment biopic in “George & Tammy,” a six-part limited series airing on Showtime.
The story behind George & Tammy plays out like a real-life “Star Is Born:” king of his respective entertainment genre takes a young upstart under his wing and falls in love with her – but his substance abuse issues only get worse when her star starts to eclipse his. Of course, the real-life romance of king of country music George Jones (played by Michael Shannon) and his queen Tammy Wynette (played by Jessica Chastain) takes some extensive detours. But at this point in the music biopic era, we’ve already seen a multitude of missed gigs, dressing room arguments, and bottles hurled against a wall, preferably smashing a mirror (although Jones driving drunk on a riding mower is the stuff of alcoholic legend).

In preparation for their upcoming series “George & Tammy,” Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain spent months learning the songs that George Jones and Tammy Wynette made famous, working with a vocal coach and making the pilgrimage to Nashville to record.
“The studio we recorded at butted up against the cemetery where George and Tammy are,” Shannon said. “We would go visit them. It was like this kind of spiritual odyssey that we went on.”
The two Grammy winners and Country Music Hall of Famers sang the most enduring and memorable songs in country music: “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, “Stand By Your Man”, “Tennessee Whiskey”, and “D-i-v-o-r-c-e”. But the relationship between Jones and Wynette during the height of their careers wasn’t the fairy tale romance many fans had hoped for the couple often nicknamed “the first lady and president of country music.”

Watching a newly-in-love George Jones (Michael Shannon) and Tammy Wynette (Jessica Chastain) perform together at a bar, country music producer Billy Sherrill (David Wilson Barnes) takes in the crowd’s rapturous reaction.
“Look at how they look at them,” he remarks to songwriter George “Rich” Richey (Steve Zahn) beside him. “George and Tammy are every man who ever loved a woman, and every woman who ever loved a man.” Rich suggests it’s “just poetry,” but Billy sees something else. “Not poetry. Commerce,” he says, adding only after a pause: “And poetry too, I suppose.”
It’s true the two are inextricably linked in Showtime’s George & Tammy, which charts a relationship in which the tumultuous romance fed the chart-topping music, and vice versa. But it’s the first part of Billy’s statement that truly gets to the heart of the series.

"We just gotta hold on…" "That's right." Showtime has debuted an official trailer for a new mini-series titled George & Tammy, arriving for streaming this December. All the episodes are directed by filmmaker John Hillcoat, the latest movie director to move into TV. It's based on the book "The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George" by Georgette Jones, telling the true story of these two musicians. The series is a look at the "complicated-but-enduring relationship" between famed country musicians George Jones and Tammy Wynette, as played by the very talented actors Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain. "But as in every fairy tale, dark forces were just around the corner. Her parents fought, and George drank. George and Tammy divorced when Georgette was four, and it would be years before she understood just what that meant…" The series also features Steve Zahn, Kelly McCormack, Katy Mixon, Hendrix Yance,...

The long and winding journey to get "George & Tammy" to the small screen has undergone one final detour before the premiere date for the limited series. Originally conceived as a feature film for Fox Searchlight years back, which is when actor Jessica Chastain first became attached to the project, the dramatization of famous country music singers George Jones and Tammy Wynette eventually landed as a Spectrum Original that would eventually air on the Paramount+ streaming service. That release plan has changed once again, however, as Variety reports that "George & Tammy" will now move to Showtime.
Starring Michael Shannon as George Jones alongside Chastain as Tammy Wynette, "George & Tammy" is set to debut simultaneously -- and commercial-free -- on both Showtime and Paramount Network. The rest of the six-episode drama will then air exclusively on Showtime every Sunday. But that's not all. New episodes will also be made available to stream...

Country music drama limited series George & Tammy, starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals), is headed to Showtime.
The series, from MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, was caught in the fallout from Charter shutting down its Spectrum Originals unit. George & Tammy, a co-production between Spectrum Originals and Paramount Network, was among the orphaned series.
The series was to premiere on Spectrum as one of its original series and, after a nine-month exclusive run, get a second window on the Paramount Network and Paramount+.
The move to Showtime comes weeks after Chris McCarthy took oversight of the premium network following the exit of Showtime’s longtime chief David Nevins. Orchestrated by McCarthy, who also oversees MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Network, the decision signals a possible emphasis on shows with A-list talent at Showtime going forward.
