“Game of Thrones” co-executive producer Vince Gerardis is setting up a production company in Italy, Variety has learned.
The new venture, dubbed Ciao, or Creatività Italiana Americana Organizzata, is the latest move from the Miami-based executive, who specializes in packaging and selling large-scale, world-building film and television projects based on literary properties.
Gerardis is in talks with an Italian publisher for a deal that would give Ciao access to a range of Italian literary talent, with an eye toward “establishing an interesting and fresh business model from what I’ve learned over the years of representing authors,” he told Variety. The Rome-based company is developing four projects and will focus on Italian IP that has the potential to travel. “It’s ‘Italy first,’ with a global view,” he said.

Game of Thrones has been renewed by HBO for Season 2 after its premiere ratings for its first episode “Winter is Coming” (reviewed here: TV Review: Game of Thrones: Season 1, Ep. 1: Winter Is Coming) warranted the quick decision. HBO pulled a similar move with its Boardwalk Empire after its first episode (reviewed here: TV Review: Boardwalk Empire: Season 1, Ep.1: Boardwalk Empire) and AMC did something similar after The Walking Dead‘s second episode (reviewed here: TV Review: The Walking Dead: Season 1, Ep. 2: Guts) premiered to strong ratings. This is great news because the first episode of Game of Thrones was very engaging and the fact that each Game of Thrones season will represent each book in the fantasy series means that fans will get to see all of A Game of Thrones and hopefully all of A Clash of Kings on screen.

Ralph Vicinanza, the longtime literary agent of Stephen King and a stalwart representative of prominent science fiction authors, has passed away at the age of 60 from a brain aneurysm. "In the science fiction community, Ralph was one of the preeminent agents, and over the course of his career represented everyone from Philip K. Dick to Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and Peter Straub," said Vince Gerardis, who partnered with Vicinanza in the production company Created By. While Vicinanza helped his authors get movie deals for many years, he and Gerardis formed Created By to set up scifi projects for his authors. Among the company's credits are Jumper (based on the Steve Gould novel), the TV series Flash Forward (based on the Robert Sawyer novel) and the upcoming HBO series adaptation of the George Rr Martin fantasy series Game of Thrones. "He was a great partner, mentor and friend," Gerardis said. Vicinanza's...

Chicago – ABC is still struggling to find the next big hit to stand next to monsters like “Lost,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” and they decided to give Nathan Fillion & Stana Katic’s “Castle” a shot at hit status, but cancelled several other new shows, including “The Unusuals” and “Cupid”.
ABC announced their fall schedule today and made a few surprise choices, bringing back the increasingly interesting “Castle” and giving another chance to “Better Off Ted” and “True Beauty”.
Perhaps the most surprising move, especially considering the show’s poignant and excellent series finale, has to be the return of “Scrubs,” which will be back for midseason. They also announced 11 new series for fall and midseason.

ABC has officially picked up drama Flash Forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show, which already is being promoted on the network, received a 13-episode order Friday night.
Based on Robert J. Sawyer's novel, the Joseph Fiennes-starring series chronicles the aftermath of a global event in which everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes, 17 seconds and has mysterious visions of six months into the future.
David Goyer and Brannon Braga co-wrote the pilot for Flash Forward, which Goyer directed.
Both will exec produce the series, but according to the trade, Braga's commitment to Fox's 24, where he is an exec producer, won't enable him to be involved full time on the series.
Braga is perhaps best known for previously serving as a prolific writer/producer on several 'Star Trek' series between 1991 and 1995, including The Next Generation, Voyager and Enterprise. Braga also exec produced the short lived CBS sci-fi series Threshold in 2005.

The Hollywood Reporter details AMC's plans to develop Red Mars, a new science fiction series based on the novel of the same name. Jonathan Hensleigh, writer of Armageddon and The Punisher, is on board as writer/executive producer. Michael Jaffe, Howard Braunstein, Vince Gerardis, Ralph Vicinanza and Eli Kirschner will also executive produce.
"[Red Mars] fits in with our bigger vision of wanting series that feel like cinematic one-hour movies," says Christina Wayne, AMC's senior VP of original series and miniseries. "We're always looking for big genres but to do them in slightly different ways so they feel fresh and new."
Red Mars, which AMC is touting as character-driven, is based on a 1992 novel by Kim Stanley Robinson. It chronicles the inhabitants of the first human colony on the planet. Robinson wrote two sequels to the novel, titled Green Mars and Blue Mars, as well as several short stories published in The Martians.

Hensleigh ("Armageddon") is the writer and will executive produce alongside Michael Jaffe and Howard Braunstein of Jaffe Braunstein Entertainment ("The Memory Keeper's Daughter") and Vince Gerardis, Ralph Vicinanza and Eli Kirschner of Created By ("Jumper").
"This fits in with our bigger vision of wanting series that feel like cinematic one-hour movies," said Christina Wayne, senior vp original series and miniseries at AMC. "We're always looking for big genres but to do them in slightly different ways so they feel fresh and new," she added, noting as examples the network's Western mini "Broken Trail...

This story might be a little more sci-fi than horror, but considering the parties involved, I don't see how we can pass up covering it. The Hollywood Reporter reports that "Flash Forward", the script for which was penned by David Goyer (pictured) and Brannon Braga, is close to landing at ABC with a pilot order. As you should know by now, Goyer wrote this year's uber-hit The Dark Knight along with all three Blade films, among many others, and Braga's credits include the series "Threshold" as well as all three "Star Trek" TV entries "The Next Generation," "Voyager," and "Enterprise".
Based on the Robert J. Sawyer novel of the same name, "Flash Forward" begins with everyone in the world blacking out for exactly 2 minutes, 17 seconds and experiencing an enigmatic, futuristic vision. As you might expect, the network sees "Flash Forward" as a perfect companion piece to genre fan favorite "Lost.

Flash forward to 2009: ABC might finally have launched a strong companion to "Lost" with "Flash Forward."
After heated bidding, the spec script by filmmaker David S. Goyer and "Star Trek" veteran Brannon Braga is close to landing at ABC with a pilot order and series penalty behind it.
Based on Robert J. Sawyer's sci-fi novel, "Flash Forward" is considered very compatible with "Lost." It chronicles the chaos that ensues after everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes, 17 seconds and has a mysterious vision of the future that changes lives forever.
Goyer will direct the pilot. He also will exec produce with Braga and Jessika Borsiczky Goyer (NBC's "Revelations") along with Vince Gerardis and Ralph M. Vicinanza ("Jumper"), who own the rights to the book. ABC Studios is in negotiations to produce.
"Flash Forward" originally was developed at HBO, which retains a piece of the backend. The pay...

The sci-fi saturation of the film biz shows little sign of letup. The latest project is a Phoenix Pictures feature based on a Robert Heinlein novela and written and directed by Alex Proyas.
Phoenix principals Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Brad Fischer will produce the adaptation of "The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag," which they describe as a complex psychological thriller with plenty of action as well as some love interest. A title change is likely.
The deal with the "I, Robot" helmer closed several weeks ago, and the project will likely shoot after the Greek-born, Aussie-raised Proyas finishes "Knowing" for Summit.
Vince Gerardis, who reps the Heinlein estate and brought the project to Fischer, will executive produce along with Ralph Vicinanza. The budget will be in the $40 million-$50 million range.
Originally published in 1942, the offbeat tale centers on a man who becomes increasingly disturbed when he realizes he cannot account for his activities during the day, or even what he does for a living. He divulges his problem to the husband-and-wife partners of a private detective agency, and their investigation leads to a series of revelations they could never have fathomed.
"I read this story as a kid, and it really stayed with me," Proyas said. "It's part of my creative DNA."
Phoenix co-president of production Fischer described the project as "cool and original," and pointed out that Heinlein, who wrote about 30 novels and twice as many short stories, still is a pre-eminent icon of sci-fi literature 20 years after his death. His "Starship Troopers" was made into a 1997 movie that grossed $120 million worldwide and "Stranger in a Strange Land" became a counterculture classic tome in the '60s.
The deal marks another example, following David Fincher's "Zodiac," of Phoenix's strategy of internally developing and packaging big films with important directors. Next up for the company is Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," which toplines Leonardo DiCaprio and is in postproduction for Paramount; the Mikael Hafstrom-helmer John Cusack starrer "Shanghai" for the Weinstein Co.; and a revamped "Robocop" for MGM, which Darren Aronofsky will direct from David Self's script.
Proyas is in post on "Knowing" and is attached to direct the Universal project "Dracula Year Zero." Presumably, the Heinlein project will lense in 2010.
