AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. According to the Academy’s ruling at the time, “the reappearance in a subsequent ‘season’ of one character...

“I think they just think we operate the camera,” divulges “Native Son” cinematographer Matthew Libatique when asked to cite the biggest misconception about his job. “The whole lighting aspect doesn’t really come into play and, when you explain that part to them, it still goes right over their heads.”
Libatique was one of three lensmen interviewed at Gold Derby’s recent Meet the Btl Experts panel in Los Angeles, which was moderated by managing editor Chris Beachum. Watch the full panel discussion above with Libatique, Gary Baum (“Will & Grace”) and Adrian Peng Correia (“Glow”) and see 10-minute interviews with each of the cinematographers by clicking their names below.

The group also touched upon the films that inspired them to become cinematographers, with “Will & Grace” Dp Baum citing Billy Wilder‘s “Sunset Boulevard” (1950) as an influence.

Adrian Peng Correia admits that taking over as cinematographer for the second season of “Glow” was “an interesting conflict.” On the one hand, you have to “honor something that has already been done for the first season.” On the other hand, you have to “express yourself with camera in a different way.” Correia spoke about his work at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts Btl panel, hosted by managing editor Chris Beachum. The event took place on Thursday, May 30, at the Landmark Theater in Los Angeles. Watch our exclusive video interview with Correia above.

“The creators had asked for a way to create dynamics with the camera in terms of energy to give a more propulsive quality to some of the wrestling matches,” Adrian Peng Correia says to Gold Derby in an exclusive interview (watch the video above) about handling the cinematography on Netflix’s “Glow” for its second season. Correia further explains that “trying to find a way to elevate the visuals for the second season, particularly because there was going to be much more involved wrestling” drove his decisions about camerawork and lighting.

For Emmy consideration in Best Half-Hour Cinematography, in which Christian Sprenger was nominated last year for the first season, Correia has submitted the episode “Mother of All Matches.” He explains, “That episode to me is really the crux of the season.” If the episode does well enough in a popular vote...

South by Southwest (SXSW) is the best week of the year for film fanatics. Period. It's in a wonderful place (Austin, Texas), sweetened by a lovely atmosphere that mixes the highbrow appreciation of erudite film nerds with the go-for-broke excitement of genre enthusiasts. There's nothing quite like it in the world of film festivals -- the vibe at SXSW isn't something that's easily replicated or translated; it just is.
We were on hand to take it all in and report back. Our interviews from the festival will be coming soon, along with the films that they accompany. But we also wanted to rank every film that we saw, in order of best to worst. This year's crop was pretty wonderful, even those in the back half of the list are still pretty great. (There were a couple of stinkers, but that happens at every festival.)
So sit back and relax,...

Since the release of The Exorcist, we’ve seen countless possession films try over the years to bring something new to the subgenre, but ultimately fall short of doing anything remotely clever with its tropes. Then along comes a project like Ava’s Possessions by writer/director Jordan Galland, which does a wonderful job of putting a unique and intriguing neo-noir spin on the world of demonic forces by allowing us to see the aftermath of such occurrences and how someone afflicted would be forced to deal with putting their life back together afterwards. Galland’s approach also has a bit of a humorous edge to it as well, making Ava’s Possessions truly one of the more surprising and thoughtful genre films I’ve enjoyed in some time.
Ava’s Possessions begins where most horror movies leave off- right after the exorcism of a young woman by the name...

Welcome to another horror/sci-fi round-up! This time around we have word of two big cast confirmations for Independence Day 2, details on Scream Factory's Deep in the Darkness Blu-ray / DVD release, and information on the new Blanc/Biehn Productions film, Treachery.
Independence Day 2: Last night it was revealed that the first official cast member had signed on to star in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day 2, the sequel to his 1996 film that featured massive alien-induced destruction and larger-than-life characters. It's now been confirmed that one of those characters will be coming back, as Emmerich tweeted last night that Jeff Goldblum will appear in the sequel, likely reprising his role as the brainy and dryly humorous David Levinson, who teamed up with fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller to take down the mothership in the original film. Smith will not be coming back to reprise his role as Steven.

We're on the set of The Red Robin feature film and were blown away by the work of production designer Dave Barnes, who transformed a stately Villanova, Pa mansion (once owned by NBA legend Dr. J!) into the home of the fictional Shellner Family.
The story centers around an ill-fated family reunion, in which the patriarch of the family, Dr. Nathaniel Shellner (played by Judd Hirsch), a famed psychiatrist, is on his death bed. Years earlier, Dr. Shellner adopted a number of children, who are now adults. The youngest of those children, Tommy Shellner (played by Ryan O'Nan), makes the stunning accusation that his father adopted the children for the purposes of experimentation for the government.
