Following the production of Antaine Furlong’s Ascendant at Fox Studios Australia towards the end of 2019, producer James M. Vernon wanted to return to the Sydney facility to film his next project.
However, he found space was hard to come by.
“We couldn’t get in because Marvel and other projects were there for the foreseeable future,” he told If.
“It got us thinking that we’ve got nowhere to go and there are a whole lot of other people that have got nowhere to go as well.”
The predicament would plant the seed for Lakeside Studio, a $150 million film production precinct to be built at Penrith Lakes.
A commercial arrangement has been agreed upon with Penrith Lakes Development Corporation to deliver the facility, which will be spread over 39 hectares in the tourism and tech precinct immediately west of the city’s CBD.

Russell Crowe has announced plans to back a new film studio in Australia’s Coffs Harbour, situated on the country’s New South Wales Mid North Coast. The state-of-the-art facility, with an estimated value of $438M, will be constructed on a sprawling pre-existing Pacific Bay resort complex and will integrate production, post-production and accommodation and amenities.
Crowe, who lives in the coastal city situated between Sydney and the Gold Coast, will back the project with partners including Pacific Bay resort owner Peter Montgomery and film production Keith Rodger.
“The opportunity to build a facility like this spreads opportunity through the community by creating jobs, but not just jobs: actual professions and careers,” Crowe said at a press conference on Wednesday. “For a number of years I’ve been thinking how I might be able to combine where I live and my work.”

Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner and Jennifer Kent thriller The Babadook have both won the Aacta (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Award for best film, marking the first time that two titles have shared the country’s top film prize.
The event in Sydney, hosted this year by actresses Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman, is only the 4th annual Aacta Awards but they were the result of an overhaul of the AFI (Australian Film Institute) Awards, which were established in 1969.
The two winning films could not be more different from each other. Kent’s meticulously crafted low-budget claustrophobic thriller, The Babadook, is about a single mother who battles with her son’s fear of a monster lurking in the house.

For the second consecutive year, Warner Bros. Pictures International has exceeded the coveted $3 billion mark at the international box office. This benchmark comes on the heels of the release of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, which surpassed $400 million at the international box office this weekend and is still going strong.
Nine Warner Bros. Pictures films have exceeded $100 million internationally, topped by Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (with Paramount Pictures), which has taken in an astounding $467 million outside of the U.S. to date, and Godzilla (with Legendary Pictures), which has earned $327 million overseas.
Four titles – Doug Liman’s Edge Of Tomorrow (with Village Roadshow Pictures), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller’s The Lego Movie (also with Village Roadshow Pictures), and Noam Murro and Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise Of An Empire (with Legendary), along with the 2014 spillover grosses from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...

The Weinstein Co acquired Russell Crowe‘s feature directing debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where 12 minutes of the film was screened. I saw footage of The Water Diviner at Cine Europe in Barcelona in June and there is definitely an epic feel to the picture based on what was shown there. Crowe plays an Australian farmer who travels to Turkey four years after the battle of Gallipoli in search of his sons who have been reported missing in action. Olga Kurylenko plays the hotel owner with whom he forges a relationship and Jai Courtney is a soldier organizing the effort to identify the tens of thousands of soldiers killed. He reluctantly allows the grieving father to stay and look for his sons’ bodies. Written by Andrew Knight and Andrew Anastassios, The Water Diviner is a RatPac Entertainment film and is executive produced by Brett Ratner and James Packer.

It’s 1919, and as the stench of cordite that has engulfed the world thins, an Australian father arrives at Gallipoli to recover the bodies of his sons, only to find hope where he thought there was none.
The film will go into production, in Australia and Turkey, later this year. It’ll will be produced by Troy Lum and Andrew Mason for Hopscotch Features and by Keith Rodger for Fear Of God Films.
Now seems like a great time for Crowe to step behind the camera.

Bello is set to star in the drama "Emergency Sex," which is being written by "Slumdog Millionaire" scribe Beaufoy and executive produced by Bello, Beaufoy and Crowe.
