Rotten Tomatoes has shared an updated ranking of the "300 Best Movies of All Time" which they say are "reviewed and selected by Tomatometer-approved critics and Rotten Tomatoes users."
At #1? 1997's L.A. Confidential, a movie which has little to nothing in common with superheroes! However, comic book adaptations do factor into the list, with 11 in total making the cut.
According to the review aggregator, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best superhero movie ever, coming in at #21. Released in 2018, the Sony Pictures title grossed $384.3 million and won a "Best Animated Feature" Oscar in 2019 (making it the first non-Disney/Pixar movie to do so since 2011).
Also included in the list are The Dark Knight (#51), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (#81), Spider-Man: No Way Home (#128), Avengers: Endgame, (#142), Iron Man (#145), Black Panther (#225), Logan (#228), Guardians of the Galaxy (#254), Thor: Ragnarok (#274), and The Avengers (#286).
Needless to say, we're sure these selections will generate some discussion!

The 2018 film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, was a boldly stylistic and striking foray into the flagging superhero genre, and featured a wild multi-dimensional story that brought multiple Spider-People (and a Spider-Pig) together from various threads in Marvel Comics canon. The main character was Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), although audiences also met a few versions of the original Spider-Man Peter Parker as well. Critics and audiences loved "Into the Spider-Verse," and the film would go on to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The 2023 sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" resembled "The Matrix Reloaded" in many ways. It was twice as visually dazzling, and it was more narratively ambitious ... and it was only half of a movie. For being so much bigger, "Across" is ultimately the lesser movie. We'll have to wait to see if "Across the Spider-Verse" is good after we see "Beyond the Spider-Verse,...

It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. It’s an arbitrary rule of the Academy that only four “teams” may be recognized in the animated feature category.
The official nominees from “Spider-Verse” are Dos Santos’ fellow directors Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, producing partners Phil Lord and Christopher Miller,...

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is looking like the very real deal, in the wake of so many mid superhero movies. To date, the Into the Spider-Verse sequel has a 95% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, and most every review is loaded with superlatives.

Breathe easy, Spider-fans. After 2018's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" came out of nowhere to shatter expectations and breathe new life into superhero movies, audiences anxiously waited to see if and when a sequel would be given the green light and, most importantly, if it could possibly live up to the standard set by the first animated movie. Well, those concerns seem to have been put to rest, if the reactions and reviews for "Across the Spider-Verse" are anything to go by. (You can read /Film's review by Chris Evangelista right here.)
But there's one common element that practically all the early reactions for the highly-anticipated "Spider-Man" movie have gone out of their way to note: it apparently ends on a rather significant cliffhanger. In contrast, "Into the Spider-Verse" told a very self-contained story that wrapped up to satisfaction in less than two hours. As it turns out, however, the filmmakers...

Nearly every mainstream animated feature (and just about every comic-book movie too) sets a tone and visual design that the audience plugs into; the movie, bold and shiny and clever as it may be, won’t deviate much from that. But the images in “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” have an intoxicating unpredictability. The film makes you feel like you’re dropping through the floors of a modern art museum on acid. Yet there’s a thrilling moment-to-moment logic to it all. The madly eclectic images express something — an eyeball-tickling explosion of quantum physics, or a subliminal nod to some comic-book style from decades ago that’s so retro it’s new, not to mention bedazzling. This feels like it could have been the first movie designed to earn a thumbs up from Andy Warhol and Stephen Hawking.
Or maybe the second, since “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was like that too.

It’s 12:30 in the morning, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller are sure that something is wrong.
They are just two and a half weeks out from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hitting theaters, and they’re holed up on a mixing stage at Sony Pictures Animation in Culver City.
They are nearing the end of the five-year marathon of making this follow-up to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and now, after so many challenges — six different animation styles, years of rewrites, with every change creating ripple effects that can mean weeks of more work for animators — it’s the sound of a watch that is bugging them.
A character presses a button on the watch and hears an error sound — a very minor moment in the hugely complex world of the Spider-Verse, but Lord and Miller can’t move past it. They try version after version, from serious to comical.

The 2018 animated adventure comedy "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was an audacious kick in the pants that brought Marvel's comics to life in astonishing new ways. It managed to not only be one of the earliest and best examples of the current boom in multiverse stories, but it also was just a darn good time at the movies. It was the cure for my superhero fatigue, and the latest trailer for the upcoming sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," has me excited for more.
The new trailer shows some of the same moments and characters as previous trailers, but it also gives us a look at a few new characters and seems to confirm that someone in Miles Morales' life is going to face the same fate as Peter Parker's Uncle Ben. That's pretty dark stuff, but the trailer also has a lot of gorgeous art to look at and plenty of...

Miles Morales is swinging back into theaters this June, bringing bags of cash along for the ride. According to analysts, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is tracking between $70 million and $80 million for its June 2-4 opening in the U.S. To put things into perspective, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened at $35.3M in mid-December 2018 and webbed up $190.2M domestic and $384.2M worldwide. While Spider-Man has a built-in fanbase, the hype for Into the Spider-Verse hit when word of mouth spread. Shortly after the original’s release, many fans said the animated film was the best Spider-Man movie, prompting scores of fans to check it out in theaters. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is leaping off that legacy. Let’s make some money!

Sony Pictures Animation previewed a still unfinished 14 minutes of the eagerly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to best animated feature Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, on Monday at CinemaCon.
“In 2018 we delivered the most creatively ambitious movie I’ve ever been a part of,” said Spa president Kristine Belson. “We are deeply proud of the sequel.”
The movie again follows Marvel’s Miles Morales/Spider-Man, voiced by Shameik Moore, and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, set across the multiverse of Spider-People. At CinemaCon, the pair were joined by new voice castmember Issa Rae (Jessica Drew) and Kemp Powers, one of the film’s trio of directors, to introduce the film.

It’s time to catch up with our man, Miles. In true Spider-man fashion, Morales is having a hell of a time trying to balance his personal life, including school and family, with his superhero-ing. Sony has just dropped the new trailer of the newest entry from Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers. This time around, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse is attempting to outdo any parallel multiverse story with even more Spider-People than you can imagine, and even placing the fate of all of them on Miles’ shoulders.
The plot synopsis from Sony Pictures reads,
Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

Sony dropped the second trailer for its upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Wednesday night and it features a more detailed look at the “elite crew with all the best Spider-people.”
The nearly three-minute trailer begins with Miles Morales/Spider-Man’s encounter with the multiverse traversing The Spot. It also sees Gwen Stacy introducing Miles to a whole host of new Spider-people at a building, that gives off a Citadel of Ricks vibe.
We also get a prolonged look at Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 who challenges Miles’ sense of morality and ethics. And with the seemingly infinite number of Spider-people, the filmmakers couldn’t resist dropping in the Spider-Man pointing meme.

When “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” director Joel Crawford was 5 years old, a wall fell on him.
He describes himself as a “hyper kid” and, at the time of the accident, he was scaling a crumbly outdoor cinderblock wall at his grandmother’s house. When it toppled over, he landed far enough back that he wasn’t seriously injured, although two of his toes had to be partially amputated. Crawford, a young boy so full of energy that he tried to climb a wall and was nearly crushed, was forced to spend time in a hospital bed. His grandmother brought him a ream of old copy paper and Crawford started drawing.
One day Crawford’s mom left to get lunch. When she came back, the nurses and doctors were huddled around Crawford’s bed. His mom was panic-stricken – did something happen? Had he gotten worse? But no. The medical staff was watching Crawford draw.

Like its predecessor, 2018's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," the 2023 follow-up "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" will cull comic book history for every possible iteration of the eponymous superhero, and force them to interact. In "Into," directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman had the Miles Morales Spider-Man (Shameik Moore) meeting and forming an unlikely bond with a middle-aged Peter Parker Spider-Man (Jake Johnson) when the latter passed into Miles' dimension. The two also teamed up with Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Ham (John Mulaney), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), and an anime duo called Peni and Sp//dr (Kimiko Glenn). In a post-credits cookie, Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), also appeared. Spider-Man 2099 will appear again.
Each of these characters has a precedent in "Spider-Man" comics. As will be proven in "Across" -- directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson -- those seven Spider-Beings are only a scratch on the surface.

There is no denying that 2018's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" was a game-changer for both the animation and superhero game. This was cinematic excellence on every level, so much so that it has cemented itself as one of the most beloved superhero movies ever made at this point. That being the case, next summer's sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," is highly anticipated, to say the very least. To add a bit of fuel to the fire? Producers/writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller are hyping up the sequel as even more insane than its predecessor.
The duo recently spoke with The Wrap about the sequel in a piece celebrating 20 years of Sony Pictures Animation. During the conversion, Miller explained, "The things that we're doing in this new 'Spider-Verse' movie are breaking the pipelines all over again. But everyone's excited about it and not just terrified." Lord then went on to add,...

Peter B. Parker Has Become A Dad In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, And That Sounds About Right
The 2018 animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, was slick and stylish in ways that few big-budget animated films are. Affecting a dazzling color palate and an exaggerated comic book panel aesthetic, "Into the Spider-Verse" took what could have been an ordinary superhero story and infused it with new life. The story follows awkward teenager Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he's bitten by a radioactive spider, giving him superpowers. Naturally, he ends up on an adventure with multiple Spider-folks from different dimensions, and a large portion of "Spider-Verse" is devoted to Miles being mentored by a middle-aged, burned-out Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson).
"Into the Spider-Verse" won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, swept the Annies, and garnered endless accolades besides. It remains one of the better superhero films of the last 20 years.

If you've ever wondered why so many superhero movies suddenly seem obsessed with the concept of multiverses these days, from "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" to the upcoming time-travel hijinks of "The Flash," you can thank "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse." Although undeniably a staple of countless comic book storylines in decades past, both Marvel and DC included, it took until the breakthrough success of the animated film and its cavalcade of Spidey-themed characters for everyone to sit up and realize how much potential this mode of storytelling contains.
Few know that better than "Spider-Verse" co-director Peter Ramsey, who (along with Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman) helped turn the impossibly complicated and ambitious film into a runaway success -- one that almost certainly played a significant role in essentially turning the same concept into live-action with "Spider-Man: No Way Home." /Film's Rafael Motamayor recently had the opportunity to speak...

More than ten years after the first movie debuted, Puss in Boots is back.
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is headed to theaters and the trailer just dropped (watch it above). And looks fun and colorful, like the somewhat more sophisticated brand extension that it always was.
Universal describes the plot of this new “Puss in Boots” as following the character (once again voiced by Antonio Banderas) as “he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek).” Only this time they are joined by “a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén).”

These days, it seems you can’t make a wallcrawler movie without at least three Web-Heads swinging around. We’re sure Sony Pictures accountants will suggest as much after the final tally from this weekend’s box office smash, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is counted.

The sequel for “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” has set a trio of new directors for its animated sequel at Sony Pictures Animation. They are Joaquim Dos Santos, “One Night in Miami” Oscar-nominee Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
They’ll take over from the trio of Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, whose film won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2018, though Ramsey is also returning to executive produce.
The original “Spider-Verse” film from 2018 was critically acclaimed for its animation style and story, which followed Shameik Moore as the voice of Miles Morales, who becomes the next Spider-Man and recruits the help of a lazier Peter Parker from another universe along with an array of other Spider-Men and even Spider-Pigs.
Returning as producers on the new “Spider-Verse” are Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg. Alonzo Ruvalcaba will co-produce.

From a kidult superhero movie to a spooky period melodrama, these films will provide entertainment for all the family
Kidult superhero movies are nothing new, but this 2018 animated splinter off the Sony-Spidey combine does something really smart with the money-spinning multiverse concept. In Rodney Rothman, Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey’s version, Spider-Man is reborn across the dimensions – as Gwen, as a private eye, as a pig – and the result is a fruitfully mind-bending recalibration of the entire mythos.

After a mostly predictable awards season, the Academy Awards surprised with a final twist on Sunday evening, giving “Parasite” the Best Picture trophy, earning South Korean Bong Joon Ho’s dramedy a spot in film history: It is the first non-English film to take home the top Oscar.
And somewhere in Hollywood, the filmmaker is still drinking.
It’s noteworthy that this happened a year after the Academy gave the contentious “Green Book” the Best Picture Oscar, in a much maligned decision that many felt undermined any attempts by the institution to diversify.
“Parasite” also won the Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film awards. It’s the first film to win both the Best Picture and Best International Film Oscars.
Additionally, Taika Waititi took home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for “Jojo Rabbit,” his adaption of Christine Leunens’ book “Caging Skies.”

There’s no mistaking it: the animation medium absolutely exploded in the 2010s, with films in all mediums, from everywhere in the world, and for every possible audience achieving incredible artistic heights throughout the decade. Narrowing the best animated movies of the 2010s down to a mere 10 choices was practically a fool’s errand, and led to a great many sacrifices of funny, poignant, thrilling and utterly unique motion pictures that — on any other day, or in any other decade — could have easily comprised this entire list instead. But these 10 animated features are undeniably worthy of celebration and acclaim, and seem destined to enthrall audiences of the future as much as they did the audiences of today.

“Into the Spider-Verse” centered on 13-year-old Brooklynite Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), who becomes one of many Spider-Men. The movie was specifically created to have a unique look that combined computer animation with traditional hand-drawn techniques.
“Into the Spider-Verse” won the Academy Award for animated feature for Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Its strong awards season included victories at the Annies, Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Producers Guild Awards.

Sony Pictures Animation has dated a sequel to the Academy Award-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” for April 8, 2022, the company announced on Friday.
The original film won the Academy Award for animated feature at the 2019 Oscars. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Vivo” was also bumped from November 6, 2020 to April 16, 2021.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was directed by Bob Perischetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman. The film captures the sprawling interconnectivity of comic-book universes in a way that no other feature film has. Anything can happen, and it usually does. It’s incredibly thrilling to watch, impressively emotional throughout, and easily the best Spider-Man movie since “Spider-Man 2.”
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” stars Shameik Moore (“Dope”) as Miles Morales, a half-black, half-Latino teenager torn between his overbearing yet good-natured police officer father Jefferson (Brian Tyree Henry) and his more relaxed, sketchier uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali). While Miles practices his graffiti art with his uncle, he...

Sony’s semi-reinvention of their staple franchise superhero Spider-Man has had more rebooted and retooled cinematic incarnations in the last decade than Peter Parker has had warm meals. Announced/leaked during the infamous Sony hacks of 2014 and coming off a reboot of the tragically inept and doomed Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man series and the Marvel re-introduced McU participant Tom Holland, as well as the critically and financially successful video game of the same name.
Not only does it look and sound like there’s a form of overabundance and oversaturation for audiences, but does Sony really want to risk it all again...

After an incredibly successful theatrical run, almost unanimous critical praise, and an Academy Award for Best Animated Film, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings onto home video in a stacked edition from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film follows the birth of a new superhero is mild-mannered Miles Morales, a young Afro-Latino who is bitten by a radioactive spider in a an alternate universe from the one we've seen so many times on the big screen. The thing that separates this Spider-Man from all previous incarnations is the introduction of the Spider-Verse concept, an infinite number of parallel universes, many with their own Spider her, colliding following a science experiment gone crazy. In order to save his own world, Morales...
