With three issues under the belt it is time for a mid-term assessment of Robotech. I’m thinking a solid B, though a book that only looks like getting better rather than dropping off. I have been finding myself enjoying the nostalgia, the places and people, more than the actual specific script and ongoing story. Pacing has varied a little as well, as has the focus. Is this going to be mostly Rick and Minmei focused? Are they just the initial focus, and everyone will get their time in the Sun at some point? Not sure. I do like the fact though that Brian Wood has achieved a good balance, between old touches and new, definitely a positive.
Hopefully by now we all know robotech is the technology designed by fusing human tech with alien, specifically from the...

That time of the month again, when it’s time for a pure shot of full strength nostalgia. Every issue feels like a sugar rush, as you not only enjoy the story Brian Wood and Marco Turini are unfolding, but also all the little nods and winks to long term fans, with throwaway comments or referenced places and things. The creative team have found the perfect balance for readers both old and new, something not that easy to pull off.
Obligatory recap alert. Robotech, as you should all know by now, comes from robotechnology, a human/ alien amalgam that came from salvaging a huge crashed alien ship and tinkering with it, now rebranded for Earth as the superbly named Super-Dimension Fortress. Good, right? Yep, until those pesky aliens came back to reclaim their ship. Pilot Rick Hunter and...

A major character will be killed off in Titan’s new Robotech series, Harmony Gold USA and Titan Comics announced today, paving the way for a stunning new arc penned by fan favorite writer Brian Wood (Dmz, Briggs Land) and legendary Transformers scribe Simon Furman.
The critically acclaimed and sell-out comic series, which launched in August, takes into account every iteration of the Robotech series, and casts a fresh eye over classic characters from the iconic ‘80s sci-fi anime.
Now, the series (written by Brian Wood with art by Marco Turini) is set to scale new heights with a dramatic first season climax that will change the face of Robotech forever… including the death of a major member of the team! But will it be Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Lynn Minmei, Roy Fokker, Claudia Grant or Henry Gloval who pays the ultimate price?
All will be revealed in Robotech #4 (on...

The term ‘reboot’ can be overused these days, used for the most minor changes or just to drum up interest in a new Number 1 issue. Not so with the Robotech reboot from Brian Wood and Marco Turini, which as the first issue showed was a true reboot. Brian Wood’s re-imagining focuses on two main things. Firstly, he took the story back to Macross Island, where it all began decades ago. Secondly, and more impressively, he decided everything that came before was canon. So all those self contained books, comics and TV episodes are now part of the RoboWoodVerse. We may need to work on that name obviously, but an impressive intention all the same.
So last issue was mainly about setting the scene for new readers and refreshing the memories of the old. Ten years ago...

A few years ago, a friend introduced me to the anime version of Berserk. Based off the ongoing manga series of the same name by Kentaro Miura, the 25 episode anime covers the Black Swordsman arc as well as The Golden Age. The anime is quite honestly one of, if not my all time favorite. And, though I’m disappointed the series did not continue past the initial 25 episodes, I find myself re-watching the show often. From the animation to the amazing music by Susumu Hirasawa, Berserk has captivated and entertained me repeatedly. There is an ongoing production of movies currently being produced, but I find they don’t have the depth and attention to detail the series possessed, though they are entertaining and fun to watch.
Not since Rick Hunter/Hikaru Ichijyo have I liked an anime character as much as Berserk’s Guts. The Black Swordsman. The wandering ronin...

DC has released a new image for the upcoming show Legends of Tomorrow. The next big CW show developed by Greg Berlanti spinning off of the Arrow and Flash universe revealed the costumes of Hawkgirl and Hawkman.
Here’s Ciara Renee as Kendra Saunders and Falk Hentschel as Carter Hall who will joining the rest of the team assembled by Rick Hunter to fight Vandal Savage. I like the costumes muted tones but find that mace just a bit underwhelming. Now we don’t have the wings but we can assume they’ll be CGI but still I would have liked to see how the scaling would look. Legends of Tomorrow debuts in 2016.

My love for deformed action figures steams from a Robotech toy I bought when I was a kid. Rick Hunter is my favorite character in Robotech, so when I found this really odd looking incarnation of Ricks Vf-1S at a local toy store I flipped out. Sure the figure looked like it could be the Vf-1S’ pudgy little brother, but to me it was the coolest version of a Veritech I’d ever seen. Did I mention the figure came with the Vf-1S Strike Armor as well as a mini figure of Lynn Minmay? Pretty cool stuff for a little kid. Would I rather have had a mini Lisa Hayes figure, sure, but what are you gonna do? Now, at this point in my life I was pretty much a fan of all things giant robots from Transformers to Mazinger Z (or Tranzor Z as we knew...

Reportedly, famous A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio (The Great Gatsby, Inception) was up for a role in Star Wars but passed because he is keen on landing a role in a live-action adaptation of (what Americans know as) "Robotech". Without going too deeply into the completed history of which Japanes anime series the footage in "Robotech" originates from, the anime tells the story of humanity in a far distant future and their battle against the alien Zentraedi. The conflict resides over an alien ship that crashes on Earth and the the efforts by the aliens to retrieve it. In the midst of the conflict, humans gain knowledge of the limitless energy known as "protoculture," a discovery that's a launch point for future "Robotech" series. The primary protagonists of the series is a young pilot named Rick Hunter, which is presumably the role DiCaprio would be after. Back in January,...

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week
"Ginger & Rosa"
What's It About? Sally Potter's ("Orlando") film follows two inseparable teenage girls, Ginger (Elle Fanning) and Rosa (Alice Englert) during the onset of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1960s London. While Ginger's interests lie in protests and poetry, Rosa's are different, including Ginger's father (Alessandro Nivola).
Why We're In: While Fanning steals the film with a strong and powerful performance, "Ginger & Rosa" also has a largely talented cast including Annette Bening, Oliver Platt, Christina Hendricks, and Timothy Spall. Potter's film is both a moving, coming-of-age story as well as a detailed look at the politics and tension of the era.
Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week
"Pieta"
What's It About? From South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk, ("Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring"), "Pieta" is both a brutal and heartfelt story of an isolated, merciless loan shark who violently threatens his borrowers for payback money.

The “Robotech” saga comes to DVD Stateside. I used to watch “Robotech” on TV as a kid. It was rad. How could you not love this stuff if you were a kid into sci-fi? Impossible. Though I admit, as I grew up, I lost track of the show/property, so I have no idea what “Love Live Alive” and “The Shadow Chronicles” are, but apparently they are two “Robotech” movies that have now been combined into one DVD package called the “Robotech: 2-Movie Collection”. Sounds straight forward enough. The Robotech chronicle continues with the unveiling of the all-new anime adventure Love Live Alive. Taking place during and after the events of Robotech: The New Generation (available in Robotech: The Complete Series from Lionsgate Home Entertainment), this thrilling installment in the Robotech saga follows the adventures of Lieutenant Lance “Lancer” Belmont as he recounts his journey from before his first encounter...

On Oct. 18, A&E Home Entertainment will release Robotech: The Complete Original Series on DVD. The 17-disc set features remastered versions of all 85 half-hour episodes of the sweeping animated science-fiction television series, which, as one of the earliest anime U.S. imports, helped usher in today’s wildly popular international anime industry.
The series has been available on DVD previously in various incarnations but has been out of print for several years, though it’s still available from a bunch of third-party brokers.
Generally regarded as the first anime to come to the U.S. that attempted to remain true to the complexity and drama of its Japanese source material, the 1985 TV show was originally broadcast in the U.S. in the 1980s via syndication.

The police drama Hunter debuted in 1984 and was created by Frank Lupo and Stephen J. Cannell. The TV show ran for seven seasons on NBC and features exploits of L.A. homicide detectives Rick Hunter (Fred Dryer) and his partner, Dee Dee McCall (Stepfanie Kramer).
Stories feature the duo foiling plots involving deadly heists, killer porn stars, gangland murders, international terrorists, punk rockers, and more. Kramer left the show after six seasons to pursue her music career and her character married an old flame. Jason salutes Carl Macek, who died at the weekend. For he was the man that introduced him, and many others, to anime through Robotech...
I found out this morning that a pioneer in Japanese Animation passed away over the weekend. Carl Macek died on Saturday at the age of 59. Mr. Macek isn't a name many would recognize in the anime world, but if you live outside of Japan, he was very instrumental in introducing you to anime.
He is most famous (and sometimes hated) for his work on the series Robotech, which itself was a work created from three separate anime series: Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeda. His task was hardly simple, as he needed to, essentially, take three separate and unrelated series, and create an arc between them, to enable the show to have a long enough run for syndication, at the same time localizing it.

With "The Losers" ready to hit theaters later this month, director Sylvain White has expressed his interest in helming an adaptation of the classic "Robotech" animated series.

When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition."
"I read a draft that's really good," continued White. "I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."
