President Trump‘s planned trip to the U.K. to meet the British royal family is approaching in October, but Queen Elizabeth made no mention of the state visit during a speech on Wednesday, fueling further speculation that it may be canceled.
In her speech at the opening of Parliament, the Queen did not address Trump’s visit, despite outlining the government’s plans for the next two years, including a state visit from the king and queen of Spain next month.

Jordan Peele's directorial debut arrives in the UK, and deserves every bit of its success to date. Here's our review...
After an Oscars season throughout which the question of race in cinema was never far from commentators’ lips, up steps the unlikely figure of a horror-comedy to smash the Us box office with a hotter take than the rest. Get Out, Jordan Peele’s feature debut, somehow manages to be that rarest of things – an unpredictable horror film, and a gleefully sharp satire all at once. Gone are horror’s default targets: young girls aren’t punished for promiscuity or men for scepticism. Get Out doesn’t read like an attack, but more a good-natured entreaty for earnest white liberals to have a word with themselves.
It has a point. We’re pretty lame. There is a tendency among the white intelligentsia to congratulate ourselves on our progressive credentials:...

Ofcom has confirmed that it is investigating Top Gear over the use of the word "pikey".
On the show broadcast on February 2, 2014 on BBC Two, the phrase 'Pikey's Peak' was pictured on a placard, considered by the complainant to be a "gratuitous use of derogatory and racist language".
The BBC Trust previously cleared the programme, concluding that context was key and that it did not believe "pikey" had been used as a term of racist or ethnic abuse in the programme.
It added that "pikey" has "evolved into common parlance among a number of people" to mean 'chavvy' or 'cheap'.
"The word, in this instance, was used in a context that had no association with the Gypsy and Traveller communities."
The latest Ofcom Broadcast Bulletin published today has confirmed that the complaint is under investigation.

Benefits Street's White Dee and Katie Hopkins came face-to-face tonight (February 3) to debate the country's benefits system.
The show also featured panelists including former London Mayor Ken Livingstone, ex-Tory MP Edwina Currie and former model Annabel Giles, who previously lived on benefits as a single mother.
Hopkins said housing benefits were never set up to pay people to live "where they can't afford to live", while Currie and campaigner Jack Monroe were involved in a heated argument about food banks.
Hopkins's involvement in the debate attracted criticism on social media, with Coronation Street actor Charlie Condou saying that the show deserved "not to be taken seriously".

When she took over as the head of Channel 4, Jay Hunt said that she believed an important part of the channel's ethos was its lack of fear in "punching authority on the nose". Critics of the broadcaster's controversial new series Benefits Street might argue that the channel is now getting its kicks from punching people when they're down.
Benefits Street's first episode, which aired on Monday night (January 6), followed the story of a handful of residents from James Turner Street in Birmingham. A street picked because of its impoverished residents and the significant number of locals on benefits.
A handful of individuals were followed in the opening episode, some of them warm characters, likable and community-spirited. Others were shown to be heavy drinkers, drug dealers, drug addicts, shoplifters and scammers.
The response on Twitter was ugly and terribly depressing, with calls for the street's residents to be shot or...

Benefits Street could spark police and Ofcom investigations after airing its first part last night.
The controversial Channel 4 documentary - which will air four more episodes - focuses on residents of Birmingham's James Turner Street, which reportedly has one of the highest proportions of benefits dependents in Britain.
However, West Midlands police are now considering whether the footage broadcast in the show could help them in ongoing investigations or could lead to new cases, The Guardian reports.
"Like many people across the country, we saw the footage broadcast on the programme for the first time last night," said Superintendent Danny Long. "Throughout the programme and in the hours that have followed, we have been inundated with comments from members on the public, many of whom are concerned about elements of the show which showed criminal activity.
"We are currently assessing whether the content of the programme can assist us...

My favourite books of 2013 are Drama High (Riverhead) by Michael Sokolove, Sea Creatures (Turnaround) by Susanna Daniel, and & Sons (Harper Collins) by David Gilbert. Drama High is incredibly smart, moving non-fiction about an American drama teacher who for four decades coaxed sophisticated and nuanced theatrical performances out of teenage students who weren't privileged or otherwise remarkable and in so doing, changed their conceptions of what they could do with their lives. Sea Creatures is a gripping, beautifully written novel about the mother of a selectively mute three-year-old boy; when she takes a job ferrying supplies to a hermit off the coast of Florida,...

The Spirit Of '45 & Ken Loach | A Grammar Of Subversion | Flatpack | Reel Iraq
The Spirit of '45 & Ken Loach, Nationwide
Remembering the days when national solidarity meant more than just buying a Keep Calm And Carry On tea towel, Ken Loach's timely new documentary recalls that rose-tinted moment at the end of the second world war when the country was ready to pull together and rebuild bombed-out Britain. Those were the days: universal healthcare, decent public housing, Clement Attlee and the greater good. Couldn't we do with some of that spirit now? No one is better qualified than Loach – something of a national institution himself – to ask. After a special screening this Sunday afternoon at the Ritzy in south London he'll be joined by the comedian Jeremy Hardy and the author of Chavs, Owen Jones, plus interviewees from the film, for a satellite Q&A that will go out...

Starkey was a guest on the BBC’s newscast “Newsnight” recently along with authors Owen Jones and Dedra Say Mitchell to talk about the London riots. Starkey said on the program that the riots were due to “whites [becoming] blacks.” “What has happened is that the substantial section of chavs that you [Owen Jones] wrote about have become black. The whites have become black,” he said. “A particular sort of violent, destrictive, nihilistic gangster culture has become the fashion. Black and white, boy and...

'The working-class have been purged from our screens. Time to put them back?' is an article by Owen Jones, written exclusively for Pure Movies. The launch of Coronation Street on ITV in 1960 was a mini-revolution. For the first time, there was a TV series that revolved around sympathetic, realistic working-class characters and looked at how they lived their lives. It struck a chord and within months attracted over 20 million viewers. It rode the wave of so-called Northern Realism, a new genre of film that explored the realities of working-class life. Saturday Night and Saturday Morning, A Taste of Honey, Room at the Top and Cathy Come Home were classic examples. While working-class people were the starts of favourites like The Likely Lads, it was middle-class people who could find themselves the butt of jokes in The Good Life and other series. There was even a popular sitcom in the...
