Legal docudrama Saint Omer was voted Best Picture at the 34th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, which announced this year’s juried award winners today.
Saint Omer wins for its ability “to expertly interrogate issues of society, culture, race, and gender,” the festival release stated. “Alice Diop, as screenwriter and director, delivers a film that explores different dynamics of Black women in contemporary France, drawing empathetic lead performances from Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanga. By harnessing the skills of her technical team, Diop turns Saint Omer into a shrewd, cogent, ambitious, and overwhelming film which teases a metafictional awareness while remaining clear-eyed and unsentimental.”
The Palm Springs festival took place from January 5-16 and screened 134 films from 64 countries, including 27 premieres. The lineup includes 35 of the International Feature Film Oscar submissions.

Kalev. Pille Rünk: 'The choreography for the basketball sequences was planned very meticulously' Photo: Allfilm In 1991, a few months before the collapse of Soviet Bloc, a small Estonian basketball team became an unlikely champion of the whole Soviet Union. Kalev, directed by Ove Musting, fictionalises more than their ascent to victory. It is just as interested in the aggressive negativity of the public and the press over the team's decision to play in a league dominated by numerous other Soviet teams. Estonia had already declared independence. Instead of focusing on the classic heroes, the film tries to pay attention to all the ways basketball impacted the daily lives of the nation – its social, political, and personal importance. We talked to Musting and the producer Pille Rünk about the personal, political, and practical intricacies of making this enjoyable and technically complex film.

In the midst of this political collapse and chaos, there are people who want to go about their business. Rebound, assist, points, win! Ove Musting's debut Kalev focuses on the team, the last basketball champions of the Ussr. A team who become a national pride as people unite around a command and build their identity through sports. Hong Kong has selected the crime thriller Where the Wind Blows as its official submission to this year’s International Feature Oscar race.
Directed by Philip Yung, the film follows four corrupt police officers who rose to power in 1960s Hong Kong played Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Aaron Kwok, Patrick Tam, and Michael Chow.

Global platforms facing imminent local production quotas across Europe could be looking at a similar situation in Australia, where new proposed TV reforms could force international streaming services to invest heavily in local content.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, that is just one of two parts of a government plan to level the regulatory playing field between streamers and traditional free-to-air networks in Australia, which are struggling in the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The government is also considering the removal of annual broadcast spectrum taxes for commercial TV networks and replacing them with an entirely new licensing program that could save local broadcasters as much as $12 million Aud ($8.85 million) per year.
