Netflix’s Maestro — written, produced and directed by and starring Bradley Cooper as legendary composer Leonard Bernstein — will be the festival’s opening night film. Makeup effects artist Kazu Hiro, a two-time Academy Award winner for Bombshell and Darkest Hour, will receive the Vaff Craft Award at the screening.
The festival’s centerpiece film will be Focus Features’ The Holdovers, directed by Alexander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newcomer Dominic Sessa. Fresh off its screenings at festivals in Telluride and Toronto, Apple has released the first trailer for its new romantic drama “Fingernails” with Jesse Buckley and Riz Ahmed.
Here’s the brief plot summary for the film – which also stars “The Bear” actor Jeremy Allen White – that was provided by Apple:
If there was a scientific test that proved whether you and your partner were in love, would you take it? Anna (Jessie Buckley) and Ryan (Jeremy Allen White) have found true love. It’s been proven by a controversial new technology. There’s just one problem: Anna still isn’t sure. Then she takes a position at a love testing institute and meets Amir (Rez Ahmed).
Christos Nikou (“Apples”) is the director of “Fingernails” and co-wrote the script. The film is set to play in select theaters on November 3, the same date it hits Apple TV+.

Editor’s note: In “Asteroid City,” Jason Schwartzman plays Augie Steenbeck, a war photographer who has to break the news to his kids that their mother has died. He also plays Jones Hall, an actor portraying Augie in a play. This complex gamble brought a new dimension to Schwartzman’s longstanding relationship with Wes Anderson nearly 25 years after the director cast Schwartzman in “Rushmore” at the age of 19 and launched his career.
Here, Schwartzman explains the personal revelations that came out of the experience. “Asteroid City” is now in theaters.

The conversation heading into the Telluride Film Festival last week was less about the annual Colorado gathering’s expertly curated 2022 lineup and instead focused on titles that didn’t hit the mountains this year. “It’s gotten less cooperative in years past because of their rules about world premieres,” executive director Julie Huntsinger told Indiewire about the Venice Film Festival, which this year launched “White Noise” and “The Whale” along with Telluride entries “Tar” and “Bardo.” “I just don’t think that’s conducive to saving an art form that’s existentially threatened,” she added. “I hope that there can come a time where filmmakers don’t have to choose between us. I really hope we can cooperate to save cinema.”
But despite the somewhat diffuse nature of this year’s film festivals – none of the major narrative titles will hit Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York as some contenders...

Sarah Polley, at the Telluride Film Festival for the world premiere of Women Talking, her latest film as a director, acknowledged how lucky she was as an actress to have worked with so many female filmmakers. They told her to be “fierce” when they saw that she wanted to work behind the camera.
Women Talking, based on Miriam Toew’s celebrated novel about a group of Mennonite women having to confront sexual assaults committed by men feeding their desires, is a powerhouse exploration of the female imagination.
“This film began with three women talking a lot,” Polley said. She was referring to Dede Gardner as producer through Plan B Entertainment, and Frances McDormand as a cast member and producer via her Hear/Say Productions, and Polley herself.
Polley cited three female directors she’d worked with who helped pave the way for her as a director: Audrey Wells on her 1999 feature Guinevere; Kathryn Bigelow,...

The English countryside is a place of horror(s) in Alex Garland’s latest Men, a study of creepy masculinities that is bound to divide its audience on meaning. While an impressive exercise of modern horror craftsmanship that could easily flirt with a cult film status, Men’s overcrowded and facile symbolism is as transparent as it is confusing, leaving much to be desired from an otherwise very good storyteller.
It’s not hard to guess that in the quaint village where recently-widowed Harper (Jesse Buckley) retreats to in the aftermath of her partner’s suicide there lies some dormant evil. If horror has taught us anything at all, gratuitous politeness is cause for suspicion. Something is clearly amiss with Harper’s eager holiday homeowner Gregory (Rory Kinnear) and his over-helpfulness. Soon an uncanny realisation settles in: all the men in the village (and in the village there are only...

Alex Garland is back with A24 for his latest horror thriller. Titled “Men,” the new film from the Oscar-nominated “Ex Machina” writer-director finds current Best Supporting Actress nominee Jesse Buckley haunted by the death of her husband (Paapa Essiedu) and stalked by numerous men (all seemingly played by Rory Kinnear) during an escape to the countryside.
Due out May 20 in theaters, “Men” was written and directed by Garland and produced by Eli Bush, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich.
Here’s the official synopsis from A24: “In the aftermath of a personal tragedy, Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats alone to the beautiful English countryside, hoping to have found a place to heal. But someone or something from the surrounding woods appears to be stalking her. What begins as simmering dread becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by her darkest memories and fears in visionary filmmaker Alex Garland’s feverish, shape-shifting new horror film.

Sixty years ago, “West Side Story” star Rita Moreno made history as the first Hispanic actress to ever win an Oscar, taking home Best Supporting Actress for playing Anita in the musical at the 1962 Academy Awards ceremony. Sixty years later, and it seems that history will repeat itself. Steven Spielberg‘s remake of “West Side Story” and its own Anita, actress Ariana DeBose, is the overwhelming favorite to win in the Best Supporting Actress category among Gold Derby experts and users.
DeBose, a triple threat, steals scenes in the new version of the musical classic — even going toe-to-toe against Moreno in a key third act scene. DeBose has not just won numerous awards from critics groups but swept through the precursor season as well. DeBose has received Best Supporting Actress awards from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.

When Maggie Gyllenhaal picked up the phone to talk her about her Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay for the writer/director’s debut film, The Lost Daughter. She wasn’t going to celebrated at first, but soon gave in.
“I drank a lot of champagne already today!”
The film came together because the producing partners Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren (also producers with Gyllenhaal on The Kindergarten Teacher), the idea arose that Gyllenhaal herself should direct a project. Securing the rights to Elena Ferrante’s novel, The Lost Daughter. The film stars Olivia Coleman and Jessie Buckley, both who have been nominated in the best and best supporting actress categories this year.
As a 2022 nominee, she seemed more excited for her film’s stars.

It’s rare for two performers to receive Oscar nominations for playing the same character in the same film. So rare, in fact, that prior to this year, the feat had only happened when Kate Winslet was involved. But thanks to “The Lost Daughter” and its 2022 Oscar nominations for Olivia Colman and Jesse Buckley, history was made on Tuesday in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories.
“The Lost Daughter” stars both Colman and Buckley as a woman named Leda Caruso — Colman plays the character in the present day, Buckley handles the flashbacks — whose world is undone by her complicated feelings on motherhood and marriage. Buzz for both performances built for literal months before Tuesday’s Oscar nominations announcement, with Colman landing significant precursor support from the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards, while Buckley was among the nominees at the BAFTA Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards,...

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut “The Lost Daughter” opens in media res, with Leda (played by former Best Actress winner Olivia Colman) stumbles onto a beach at night before collapsing in front of the crashing waves. The film will reveal how she ended up there throughout its running time, but a sign that things won’t play out as expected comes almost immediately: As Leda lies in the sand, composer Dickon Hinchliffe’s jazzy score explodes on the soundtrack, audio proof “The Lost Daughter” likely won’t adhere to rules or assumptions.
“One of the first things Maggie said, she had this concept and she didn’t know if it would work: the music would be like a found record, like a vinyl album from the past, a vintage one from the ‘50s or ‘60s. You’d put it on to play and it would somehow magically work with the...

Arriving in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms this Friday is Kindred, co-written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Joe Marcantonio. The film follows a grieving mother-to-be named Charlotte (played by Tamara Lawrence) who ends up staying with the mother (Fiona Shaw) and brother (Jack Lowden) of her deceased boyfriend. The longer Charlotte lives at their remote family estate, the more she begins to become suspicious of their motives, and she begins to fear for both her safety and the well-being of her unborn child.

[Editor’s note: This article contains major spoilers about the plot of “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.”]
Charlie Kaufman is not a fan of solving movies for his audience. “I’m not really big on explaining what things are,” the writer-director said in a phone interview. “I let people have their experiences, so I don’t really have expectations about what people are going to think. I really do support anybody’s interpretation.”
Nevertheless, nothing in Kaufman’s head-spinning repertoire has begged for answers more than “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” His scripts for “Being John Malkovich” and “Adaptation” took bizarre labyrinthine paths into the troubled male psyche, a journey he continued with directing efforts “Synecdoche, New York” and “Anomalisa.” In his new Netflix-produced feature, however, Kaufman has built a story steeped in the details of a single troubled mind, and littered it with so many references it practically demands a masterclass in semiotics to parse them all.
That’s by design.
