Merry Christmas to all. Netflix announced it will release all 20 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 on Christmas Day, December 25, 2023. The streamer made the announcement during its annual Geeked Week.
It was announced last month that Netflix had picked up the animated series for the U.S. and most international territories in a deal with CBS Studios. The move came after Paramount+ announced in June that it would be removing a number of originals, including Star Trek: Prodigy, from the platform in a cost-cutting content write-down and not to proceed with the previously commissioned second season of the animated show. The second season now will debut on Netflix in 2024.

“Star Trek: Prodigy” has set its official launch date on Netflix.
Season 1 of the animated series will debut on the streamer on Dec. 25. The announcement was made as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week.

With the move, “Prodigy” will be the first new “Star Trek” series to air domestically outside of the Paramount ecosystem since the revamped “Star Trek” TV universe launched with “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2017.
Per the official description of “Prodigy,” the show follows “a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future.

If you have ever watched Star Trek, you already know what the Prime Directive is. General Order One. As Kirk describes it in The Original Series episode, “Bread and Circuses,” the order decrees Starfleet crews should make “No identification of self or mission; no interference with the social development of said planet; no references to space, other worlds, or advanced civilizations.”
Of course, there’s a bit more to it than that. According to one episode of Voyager, the Prime Directive contains 47 sub-orders, including more than a few loopholes that have been exploited over the years, but the gist of it is, if a civilization has not yet developed warp travel, Starfleet is to treat their planet like a nature reserve, to be observed but never interfered with.
“I think of the Prime Directive as having two components,” says Robin Wasserman, who has written two episodes of Strange New Worlds.

On June 23, 2023, it was announced that Paramount+ would be canceling its animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy" at the end of its second season. To add insult to injury, every extant episode of the series to date was to be removed from the service entirely. One can still find "Prodigy" on DVD and Blu-ray, but Trekkies might want to hustle if they want to see this series at all. The reason for the cancelation is likely due to the broad fallacy of modern streaming. Major studios, it seems, stuff their streaming services with expensive, high-profile programs to prove to the company's shareholders that their streaming services have a lot of abstract value. If the stock value stays high, then the services will continue to overspend on production. The actual popularity of the shows is irrelevant, and many have suspected that most streaming services have much lower numbers than they have let on.

A group of Star Trek fans have banded together to try and save the recently canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, which was axed by Paramount+ ahead of its planned second-season return.
After gathering 33,000 signatures in a petition on Change.org and raising money via GoFundMe, the fans contracted a plane to fly a “Save Star Trek Prodigy” banner over the Los Angeles offices Amazon, Hulu and Apple — including circling for 10 minutes over the Netflix offices on Sunset Boulevard.
Co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to praise the effort: “This is incredible. We owe these Trek fans a pint and our lifetime devotion. Blessed to have people like all of you in our stratosphere.” Fans also joined co-executive producer Aaron Waltke and voice actress Bonnie Gordon outside of the Netflix building.

Six seasons and a movie! Before Community made that phrase its mantra, it belonged to Star Trek… sorta. The release of The Motion Picture vindicated fans of The Original Series, who only grew in number after the show’s cancellation after three seasons in 1969. So successful were those films that the Star Trek: The Next Generation films were a foregone conclusion, with Star Trek: Generations going into production before the seventh and final season finished airing.
Outside of Tos and Tng, no other Trek series has gone onto the big screen, and Star Trek: Prodigy seems the least likely to break that streak. After all, the series was reportedly canceled and was ignominiously removed from Paramount+, the so-called “Home of Star Trek.” And yet, the show’s producers told attendees at Star Trek: Las Vegas that hope is not gone for the plucky animated series.

Star Trek has endured since 1966 largely in part to the creators refusing to speak down to their audiences. Whereas “The Cage”, the first pilot shot in 1964, was deemed “too cerebral” by NBC execs, the show that made it on air rarely stopped being thought-provoking. When the three season mission ended, its next iteration was on Saturday morning television, where, once again, the writers and production team refused to dumb things down.

During Guillermo del Toro’s time as an animation producer at DreamWorks, he earned a certain reputation around the studio. “Jeffrey Katzenberg called me ‘The Harbinger of Death’ because a lot of my solutions to a character conflict was to kill them.” del Toro recalled, with a laugh, during a recent interview with IndieWire. It was the early 2010s, when DreamWorks movies were starting to become darker and more daring, and del Toro wanted to push directors to try riskier, wilder things. “When I consulted on ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ they were debating what to do with the father character,” del Toro explained. “I said, ‘Kill him. That will give the entire movie a lot more gravitas.’” Likewise, “Puss in Boots” offed its villain, one of the heroes died halfway through “Rise of the Guardians”, and “Kung Fu Panda” included a panda massacre as a plot line.

The latest episode of "Star Trek: Prodigy," "All the World's a Stage," finds the teen crew of the U.S.S. Protostar encountering a distant planet occupied by a species called Enda-Prizians who speak in a formal Starfleet-like language and wear Starfleet-adjacent clothing. The Protostar crew soon come to the conclusion that this planet had been visited by Starfleet over a century ago, and the society adopted the organization's trappings as the basis of their society. They worship "Star Flight" and re-enact old ships' logs on a wooden stage, living "Star Trek" as their central cultural myth. "Enda-Prizian" is, of course, meant to sound like "Enterprise." They speak of a time when Star Flight will return and slay a monster that shares their planet.
This is clever on several levels. Firstly, "All the World's a Stage" could be seen as a comment on modern fandom. The Enda-Prizians have internalized "Star Trek...

With the renaissance Star Trek has had over the last few years, we have seen many actors from the old series revisit their roles. Picard, Guinan, Seven of Nine, Riker (in live-action and animated form), so perhaps we should not have been surprised to find Kate Mulgrew, the actor behind Star Trek Voyager’s Captain Kathryn Janeway, return in the new, kid-orientated and animated Star Trek series, Star Trek: Prodigy.
“It’s like riding a bicycle!” Mulgrew tells Den of Geek. “So much so that I had to laugh. I said my God she must live inside me on a vital level at all times. She’s just very quiet, waiting for her moment to come out. She’s deeply instilled, and every aspect of her is there and I have only to ask and she comes.”
