Among the announcements presented at today’s Star Wars Celebration 2023 is the return of the acclaimed series that follows Rogue One character Cassian Andor. Andor season 2 was being written during the first season’s production and had been shooting since last November. The teaser for the next season of the Disney+ Star Wars series was debuted at the celebration after the announcement by the show’s creator, Tony Gilroy, that the new season is due to hit home screens sometime in August 2024.
Deadline reports that Gilroy has stated, “We started shooting in November. We’re halfway. We will finish shooting in August, a year on post, and we’ll come out in the following August.” Gilroy also talked about how the writers planned the show’s ending with this coming season. He stated that they were “very pleased” with the series coming to its conclusion in the near future because...

With "Andor" season 1 in the bag, it's fair to say showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy and his fellow creatives have exceeded expectations with their "Rogue One" prequel series. What might have been little more than another log to add to the fire that is Disney+ and its never-ending supply of exclusive films and shows has emerged as perhaps the greatest "Star Wars" project released by the Mouse House to date. Heck, it's arguably in contention for the distinction of best live-action "Star Wars" title ever. Yes, really.
In its first season, "Andor" not only revealed the origins of the titular "Rogue One" character, but it also shined a light on the early days of the Rebel Alliance, painting the organization and its founding members in far richer shades of grey rather than the clear-cut heroes seen in the original "Star Wars" trilogy. But for as much as the show has...

If you have been enjoying "Andor" like we have, you'll be thrilled to know it won't be long before the production gets up and running again in a galaxy far, far away. Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed in an interview with Collider that filming will start in only a couple of weeks. He told the website that the cameras will roll on "the Monday before Thanksgiving," and if you've got your calendar nearby, that means production will begin on November 21. Yeah, we weren't kidding with that headline.
While their full interview has not been published as of this writing, Collider gave some insight into what Gilroy will be doing when the season begins filming. The "Andor" creator will oversee the first shot of season 2 in London before leaving and returning to the United States for the Thanksgiving holiday. Even though he won't be sticking around for long, he'll have the likes of Ariel Kleiman,...

Tony Gilroy‘s Andor is one of the most refreshing entries in the Star Wars universe in decades, and fans are frothing at the mouth to know when filming for a second season will get underway. Thankfully, Collider‘s Steve Weintraub has the scoop, making this chill Autumn Friday afternoon a bit sweeter. According to Gilroy, filming for Andor Season 2 starts November 21, the Monday before Thanksgiving.
In addition to revealing the targeted production date for Andor Season 2, Gilroy confirmed Ariel Kleiman, Janus Metz, and Alonso Ruizpalacios as directors for the new season. Are you familiar with the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” Gilroy is not messing with the original recipe for Andor and is happy to report that his brother, Dan Gilroy, and Beau Willmon, will return to write the upcoming season. Joining the writing team is Tom Bissell, who Gilroy says is a “really cool and really,...

In the span of its first handful of episodes, "Andor" has brought a completely new and much-needed creative revitalization to the "Star Wars" franchise. Much of this has to do with the fact that creator Tony Gilroy ("Michael Clayton," the "Bourne" trilogy) put aside any questions of studio interference -- like the kind that plagued the production of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" -- and simply told the boldly visionary story he set out to tell. But part of that success also came from the clever construction of the first season as a whole.
Split up into a number of mini-arcs, "Andor" has generally featured the same pairing of writer and director attached to three or four blocks of episodes at a time. Director Toby Haynes and Gilroy teamed up for the first few episodes, Susanna White and Dan Gilroy took over for the next three, and Haynes and...

All the Old Knives is an American spy thriller released in April 2022. The movie was an adaptation of the 2015 spy novel All the Old Knives by Olen Steinhauer. To help bring the novel’s story to life, director Janus Metz Pedersen worked with a great cast of actors. The movie’s storyline is centered around the CIA’s discovery that one of its agents has gone rogue. When a plane containing 100 people was hijacked in 2012, the CIA was surprised when the terrorists got information about their secret operation. Eight years later, in 2020, the CIA confirmed a leak from

The face of five-year-old Aline looks weirdly mature and toothy as she crawls from under a table at a family wedding to belt out a song early in the film of the same name. French comedian and actress Valérie Lemercier, 58, wrote, directed and stars in Aline and it’s her head on a body altered by special effects in that scene. Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films open the “fiction freely inspired by the life of Céline Dion” in the U.S. this weekend.
Lemercier, a big star in France, won Best Actress at the César Awards in February for the film, where she lends the Canadian-born pop idol a Kristen Wiig-ish vibe. Aline premiered out of competition in Cannes last year. The U.S. release was pushed from an initial date in January.

Thandiwe Newton in All The Old Knives. Courtesy of Amazon.
All The Old Knives is an intense political thriller with a relatively unusual framework. Eight years before the principal action, terrorists hijacked a commercial plane in Europe and wound up killing themselves and over 100 others. We learn that from the get-go. The mystery comes from newly-discovered evidence that there may have been a mole in the CIA who contributed to that disastrous failure. The head honcho Victor Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) assigns his top agent Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) to head up this new inquiry. Primary suspects among his old colleagues are his then-girlfriend Celia Harrison (Thandiwe Newton) and their veteran department head Bill Compton (Jonathan Pryce).
Pine approaches the task with great reluctance. Newton left him and the spy biz right after the incident, morphing into a suburban mom. Pine still pines for her from afar. The screenplay includes many...

The first line of Amazon’s spy thriller “All the Old Knives” hints at the troubles to come: “Something has gone terribly amiss.”
At one point Kate Winslet, Michelle Williams, and Idris Elba were all rumored to be attached, but fell away over the years. So how, exactly, did Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton get talked into what feels like an early-aughts, made-for-cable movie?
A stiffly somber Pine, entombed in turtlenecks and long scarves, is introduced like he’s in one of those perfume commercials celebrities try to keep hidden overseas. Despite a few moments of tense intrigue, the rest of the film too often follows suit.
Most of the action hinges on an event that took place several years ago. In flashback, we see shockwaves ripple through the CIA’s office in Vienna, as agency heads Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) and Compton (Jonathan Pryce) share news of a violent airplane hijacking by Chechen rebels.

"All the Old Knives" is the type of movie we often decry as not getting made anymore in the era of mega-budget blockbusters and micro-budget indies. But Janus Metz, the Danish filmmaker whose credits include "Borg vs. McEnroe" and episodes of hard-nosed shows like "True Detective" and "ZeroZeroZero," did the thing we always say we want: He grabbed a group of big names and made a mid-budget thriller aimed directly at adults.

Chris Pine doesn’t have a to-do list, but that doesn’t mean his career choices aren’t intentional. Mostly, the actor and producer told IndieWire, he looks for projects with a single defining characteristic: They have to be great. Over the course of the past two decades, that’s led Pine to a variety of gigs, and the multi-hyphenate has managed to fit films like his current releases (adult-themed dramas “The Contractor” and “All the Old Knives”) alongside more mainstream stuff, like the upcoming “Dungeons & Dragons” feature and the “Wonder Woman” and “Star Trek” franchises.
As Pine readies to make the jump to directing, he’s hanging his career on something a bit more zen than you might expect from such a star. As he’ll explain, really, he’s just “following the giggle.”

The Worst Cut is the Deepest: Metz Revels in Tasty Romantic Thriller
Emerging somewhere between the thorny love pacts of Graham Greene and the surefire violence of Alfred Hitchcock, Janus Metz steers an enthralling framed narrative with his sophomore film All the Old Knives, adapted by Olen Steinhauer from his own novel. A throwback to adult thrillers dabbling in romance yet relishing wretchedness, Metz commands an impressive cast in this meaty flashback narrative concerned with the jarring similarities between acts of hate and love.
Chris Pine executive produces yet another project outfitted to showcase his dexterity (although more persuasively than in Tarik Saleh’s The Contractor), but the ensemble project gifts Thandiwe Newton one of her best leading roles in years as his star-crossed lover shattered by the events of a terrorist hijacking.…...

The streaming era, with its glut of viewing options and its omnipresent yet thinly spread advertising, often makes it harder for audiences to get an advance read on a movie. When you see that a couple of actors as good as Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton have teamed up for a spy thriller that’s being released by Amazon Studios, and that it’s called “All the Old Knives” (a title that sounds like it could be about anything or nothing), you wonder — a little more than you might have 30 years ago — if it’s a project that makes good on their talents or whether it’s another ho-hum slab of product. (Ho-hum product has always been with us; but there’s more of it now.)
So I’m glad to report that It’s not John le Carré, but it’s not thinly patched together pulp either. Watching “All the Old Knives,...

Years ago, Henry and Celia had it made. They were both rising stars in the CIA, with their blossoming romance filling the scant off-time they had from their respective gigs at the agency’s Vienna station. Things were good, and while working for a clandestine intelligence agency isn’t ever easy, Henry and Celia were well-matched both for their jobs and each other. Then: the hi-jacking.

Janus Metz's "All the Old Knives" exists comfortably at the intersection between airport novels and the works of Claire Denis. It is downbeat, emotionally intense, and only slowly reveals its plot — told wildly out of chronological order, often inserting flashbacks inside of flashbacks — over the course of its first 45 minutes. But more than merely obfuscating for its own sake — a pit that lesser thrillers can often fall into — "Old Knives" wisely remains more closely focused on the relationship between Henry (Chris Pine) and Celia (Thandiwe Newton), two ex-CIA agents and former lovers, who...

In director Janus Metz’s “All the Old Knives,” Chris Pine plays a CIA agent who reconnects with a former colleague and lover (Thandiwe Newton) to find out what she knows about a terrorist hijacking of plane that occurred eight years prior.
The Amazon drama, based on Olen Steinhauer’s 2015 novel of the same name, is told through flashbacks as the two have dinner together at a gorgeous restaurant in Carmel-by-the Sea, Calif. As the meal goes on and wine is consumed, they each begin to remember the horrific hijacking — but also their romance together.
I caught up with Pine, who is sporting a bushy salt-and-pepper beard these days, on Wednesday night at the film’s premiere at the London West Hollywood hotel.
Love the beard. How long did it take to grow out?
It’s sad. It took like six months, but now I have to shave it off.

In All the Old Knives, two CIA operatives, and former lovers, reunite at idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea in the U.S. to re-examine a mission six years ago in Vienna involving a hijacked airplane where a fellow agent might have been compromised. Chris Pine co-stars in this with Thandiwe Newton, joined by Laurence Fishburne, Jonathan Pryce, Corey Johnson, Ahd, Abdul Alshareef, and Nasser Memarzia. This trailer seems to give away a lot (who is the shady one?) but I'm still curious, this looks much better than The Contractor.

“Too much too soon” is a scenario that plays out in many life arenas, and it certainly does for the teenage protagonist swept into the professional sports world of “Tigers.” . It’s a compelling tale, well cast and directed with vivid intensity by Ronnie Sandahl. Still, the somewhat frustratingly limited insight we get into our hero’s addled head may affect export prospects for a film that is more about psychology than athletics.
At age 16 in 2003, Bengtsson (played here by Erik Enge) was considered such a football prodigy that he got sold by a Swedish club to Serie A behemoth Inter Milan. It was the realization of his lifelong dream, but that doesn’t mean he was prepared for the reality, particularly off-field.
Speaking no Italian at first, able to communicate only with those teammates who speak English, he’s thrown into a dormitory-style living situation where virtually everyone is older and jaded.

Exclusive: The Venice Film Festival will reveal its lineup later this week and two anticipated TV series are expected to make their debut on the Lido: cocaine-trafficking crime-drama ZeroZeroZero and Paolo Sorrentino’s Jude Law-starrer The New Pope.
We hear the festival is set to screen the first two episodes of anticipated Euro-u.S. co-pro ZeroZeroZero starring Andrea Riseborough, Dane DeHaan and Gabryel Byrne.
There was some uncertainty over whether the show would bow this early given that it is unlikely to air until early next year (production was held up after an injury to Riseborough), but U.S. rights holder Amazon has given the green light for a Venice debut.
The Italian-origin show is likely to be among the festival’s biggest draws. The Cattleya epic for Sky, Canal+ and Amazon is adapted from Gomorrah scribe Roberto Saviano‘s book about international cocaine trafficking and its economic and political effects.

The Netherlands had 10 films including shorts, docs and fiction features at Tiff this year.
Retrospekt*, the second feature by award-winning director/screenwriter Esther Rots world-premiered in the Contemporary World Cinema programme of the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival. The film is produced by Rots Filmwerk (Nl) and Column Film (Nl) in co-production with Serendipity Films (Be).
In a stunning non-linear structure Retrospekt unfolds the layered story of Mette (37) who questions where the sense of fulfillment she once felt with her husband and daughter has gone. Esther Rots’ first feature Can Go Through Skin* world-premiered at Berlinale 2009 and won numerous prizes worldwide, including the Fipresci Award at Transylvania and the Ingmar Bergman International Debut Award at Gothenburg.

With acting and filmmaking in her blood, is was perhaps only a matter of time when Tuva Novotny would make the move behind the camera. Last year, the actress took on supporting parts in Janus Metz’s Borg vs McEnroe and Alex Garland‘s Annihilation, while 2018 would see Novotny premiere Blind Spot at Tiff (Golden Shell comp title at San Sebastian) with her sophomore feature Britt-Marie Was Here (starring Pernilla August) not that far behind in terms of a release. Her gut-wrenching, unrelenting drama on how society often passes the buck is a technical marvel for its choreography and one take film aesthetic.…...

A film ten years in the making, anthropologist Sine Plambech and her director husband Janus Metz’s open a door with Heartbound onto an intriguing humanist story dealing with the complexities of life, love, and survival that spans almost nine thousand kilometers from Thailand to Denmark. The logline is simple: over 900 Thai women have moved to Jutland in order to marry Danes and carve out a better life than is available back home. The motivations for this decision, however, are much more involved. What began twenty-five years ago when Niels Molbæk met his future wife Sommai while vacationing in the Thailand sex district of Pattaya has expanded into a sprawling network built around hope and companionship between lost souls in desperate need of emotional and financial stability.
Plambech and Metz retain focus on Sommai by branching out just far enough to create a legitimate sample size of experiences via those subjects closest to her.
