Every year, the Kailey Marsh-fronted BloodList makes waves in the industry as it reveals several high-profile horror screenplays that are available in the market. This year, due in part to the strikes, there won’t be a 15th edition, but we still wanted to celebrate the annual list and look back at some of the monstrous success stories.
“While we aren’t releasing the 15th edition in 2023, due in part to the WGA strike and the timeline to when we would accept submissions, it’s a good time to look back at the scripts and writers that have been featured on the list over the years,” Kailey tells us via release.
“From Dan Erickson, creator of the hit series “Severance”, thanking BloodList in his acceptance speech at the Hca’s for “best series writing”, to having countless writers tell me how much landing on the BloodList has done for their careers,...

A lonely resting actor in Bucharest becomes more and more disturbed by nearby events and is not reassured by her husband
Not to be confused with the recent Netflix hit series, this is in fact a very solidly engineered Hitchcockian throwback. Company man Karl Glusman and resting actor Maika Monroe are the upwardly mobile young Americans relocating to a Bucharest bolthole boasting a prominent picture window; with hubby out schmoozing clients, his better half has time enough to dwell on a gruesome local murder spree, and the silhouetted figure peering down from an adjacent property. Suspicion shifts and moves closer and closer to home, but on one point Chloe Okuno’s film remains resolute: these characters would have avoided a lot of grief had they invested in net curtains.
As recently as Wes Craven’s Red Eye in 2005, we could take this species of medium-budget runaround for granted. Yet Watcher...

From indie gems like “It Follows” and “The Guest” to the sci-fi chiller “Tau,” the pitch-black “Villains,” or the uproarious “Greta,” Maika Monroe has become our modern-day scream queen. However, her true obsession is working with exciting new filmmakers — who, more often than not, just so happen to make brilliant horror movies.
“It’s a conversation that I’ve had with my team, just to be on the lookout for up-and-coming filmmakers that are making interesting and different stuff,” Monroe said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “We all are trying to be up on the short films that come out of film festivals and the smaller movies. I try and pay attention to that as much as possible. It’s part of my job.”

Julia (Maika Monroe) becomes a stranger in a strange land in Chloe Okuno’s coolly shot thriller – but her film, co-written with Zack Ford suffers from the opposite problem in that all its elements are far too familiar.
Recently relocated to Romania with her half-Romanian husband Francis (Karl Glusman), Julia has left an acting career behind and is greeted immediately by a wall of the unfamiliar, even in the taxi from the airport, where she is excluded from the conversation Francis has with the driver because she doesn’t speak to the language yet. The couple’s dynamic is clear from the off, with Karl casually dismissive of her fears, which are about to get taken to a whole new level.
They arrive at their spacious modern apartment with enormous glass windows and tasteful muted décor – the chilly atmosphere extends outwards later, all icy blues and bleak grey save from occasional pops of.

Soon after, while alone at a local movie theater, Julia’s sense of being watched intensifies, and she becomes certain she’s being followed — could it be the same unknown neighbor? This past weekend, director Chloe Okuno celebrated the world premiere of her debut solo feature (she was at the helm of last year’s memorable “Storm Drain” segment in V/H/S/94 featuring fan favorite Raatma), Watcher, which stars Maika Monroe as a young woman who moves with her husband to Bucharest for his job, but she finds herself increasingly paranoid when she suspects that her neighbor is constantly watching her and stalking her around town.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Okuno about Watcher, and during our interview she discussed the evolution of the project over the last few years, how a last-minute change of setting ended up being a gift for the story she was telling in the film, her experiences collaborating with genre favorite Maika Monroe on Watcher, and more.

Ever since It Follows, the 2014 horror movie about a spectral grim reaper stalking a teenage girl, Maika Monroe has become her generation’s avatar of fear and paranoia. Throughout her filmography, she boasts an inner world of melancholy that begins in a delicate register and then multiplies into a feverish anguish the farther her characters tumble down their own rabbit holes. It’s the kind of psychological spiraling that gives oxygen to director Chloe Okuno’s feature debut, Watcher, a chamber piece thriller and the latest gaslighting parable to champion Monroe’s specific set of skills.

If the camera lingered just a little more lasciviously on the opening sex scene, or if we got to ogle the bondage-clad ladies writhing in their glass booths in the underground strip club sequence longer, Chloe Okuno’s smart little feature debut might be said to herald the longed-for return of the lost, lamented erotic thriller. Without that skeevy edge, into an understatedly stylish commentary on modern womanhood, #NotAllMen and the latest incarnation of the concept of gaslighting.
There’s a little bit of “Repulsion” here, a dash of “Rear Window,” obviously, and an airy nod to “Lost in Translation,” but mostly “Watcher” plays in a less exalted sandbox. Its most overt homage is to 1993’s “Sliver,” with the key disclaimer that “Sliver,” already a terrible movie, would without the hilarious sex stuff be borderline unwatchable, and “Watcher” is actually pretty damn good. That’s thanks in large part to a terrific Maika Monroe,...

Cast has been set for Chloe Okuno’s Watcher, with Maika Monroe (It Follows), Karl Glusman (Nocturnal Animals) and Burn Gorman (Enola Holmes) signing on for the phycological thriller.
The movie will begin shooting this month in Romania. It follows a young married couple Julia (Monroe) and Francis (Glusman) as they move into a new apartment together in Bucharest, just as a citywide panic is brewing over a possible serial killer on the loose. Julia, who finds herself isolated in her new surroundings, becomes increasingly tormented by the belief that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in the adjacent building.
The film is a co-production between Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Spooky Pictures, the low-budget genre label formed by producers Steven Schneider and Roy Lee. The two companies have a multi-picture slate deal and this is the debut collaboration from that pact.

Spooky Pictures, the genre label formed by producers Roy Lee (It) and Steven Schneider (Pet Sematary), has set the first production under its multi-picture slate deal with Image Nation Abu Dhabi.
The two companies previously sealed a pact for Middle Eastern outfit Image Nation to finance low-budget genre movies from Spooky Pictures. The debut collaboration will be psychological thriller Watcher, based on an original spec by Zack Ford, which was on the ‘Blood List’ in 2016. Director Chloe Okun, whose 2014 short Slut was a festival hit, has been attached to helm the movie.
Set in the midst of a city-wide panic over an active serial killer, the film follows a young woman who moves into a new apartment with her fiancé only to be tormented by the feeling that she is being stalked by an unseen watcher in an adjacent building.
The pic is now casting ahead of a planned April shoot.

Fox News is under fire from media observers for hosting a viruently anti-gay group and a controversial author with anti-gay views on Laura Ingraham’s The Ingraham Angle, particularly sensitive issues as cities across the nation celebrate Pride Month.
On Thursday, the Fox News personality and podcast host invited the writer Arthur Shaper to participate in a panel to discuss the popularity of Drag Queen Story Hour, a program where drag queens read children’s story books to kids at local libraries. Drag Queen story hours are “popping up all over the country,” Ingraham warned viewers Thursday night.
On Friday, Fox had guests from MassResistance, a group whose views have been labeled hate by some organizations.
Thursday guest Schaper called drag queens “adult illicit entertainment” and condemned a program adapted by many libraries called Drag Queen Story Hour, calling them “pole dancer story hour” and “porn actor story hour,” according to Media Matters.

President Trump called into Hannity on Wednesday night for his first interview since Special Counsel Robert Mueller filed his final report to the Justice Department. It’s probably inaccurate to refer to this segment as an “interview.” The call, which lasted nearly 45 minutes, consisted mostly of Trump aimlessly cycling through issues with little intervention or pushback from the Fox News host, someone he counts as a friend and informal adviser.
The president has claimed, falsely, that he has been totally exonerated from any wrongdoing in the wake of the Mueller Report.

President Donald Trump — who has faced several charges of anti-Semitism in the past — almost made it through the Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Days of Remembrance ceremony without controversy.
Almost.
While some applauded the solemn tone Trump struck in his remarks at the ceremony on Tuesday, Late Night host Seth Meyers couldn’t help but notice the president’s mispronunciation of the word “Nazi” as “nozzie.”
In his Tuesday night monologue, Meyers roasted the president’s latest grammar flub, pointing out that the word “Nazi” is not supposed to rhyme with Fozzie (as in Bear).

Teen Wolf is adding some characters, and they're all pretty sexy, but I suppose that goes without saying. And finally, Daniel Sharman joins the lacrosse team – and catches the attention of the alpha.
We keep hearing about mutants being a metaphor for gays and the closet, and lately it's been all about the vampires. But Zack Ford makes a convincing case that Kermit and Miss Piggy have been doing that for decades.
I wonder if there will be a full-frontal scene in Noah if Michael Fassbender gets cast in the biblical epic?
It turns out that marrying the person you love is a "special right" but marrying someone of the opposite sex you feel nothing for is equality, because that's the law.
Sure, it was misogynistic to play Rep. Michele Bachmann...

Norman Twain, producer of the 3-D slasher opus Scar, let us know that he has set up a Los Angeles screening of the film for this Friday, November 7, and extended a special invitation for Fango fans to attend. He also gave us a first look at two Hong Kong posters and the British quad for the movie, seen below.
The screening takes place Friday at 1:15 p.m. at the Clarity Room (100 North Crescent, northeast corner of Crescent and Wilshire, on the lobby floor), with free admission to those who identify themselves as Fangorians. The room can only accommodate 50 people and admission will be on a first come, first served basis, so get there early!
Scar, which is currently seeking U.S. distribution, stars Fango-fave actress Angela Bettis as a young woman who returns to her hometown years after surviving an attack by a psychopathic murderer, only to confront a new series of slayings.

Today we came across a bunch of hi-res stills from Scars 3-D, which still is yet to find a Us distributor. You can find a link to all of them inside, but beware - they're freakin' huge! Zack Ford's script follows Bettis' character Joan Burrows who returns home for her niece Olympia's high school graduation only to be confronted with her nightmarish past: at the age of 16, Joan and her best friend were kidnapped and extensively tortured by a serial killer named Ernie Parish. Joan managed to escape and kill her captor, but it appears as though he has somehow come back from the dead, intent on continuing his macabre and deeply disturbing proclivities.
