2023 may not have been an excellent year for movies, but in spite of everything stacked against it (read: greedy conglomerates run amok), it turned out to be an excellent year of movies. While the fallout of the recent work stoppages will be felt for time to come, some of 2023’s losses will prove to be 2024’s gains, as much-anticipated but strike-delayed films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Drive-Away Dolls,” and Luca Guadagnino’s horny tennis drama “Challengers” have all secured fresh release dates in the first half of the new year.
Those titles will be joined by some of the most promising Hollywood blockbusters in recent memory, must-see work from some of the world’s greatest auteurs, and huge swings from essential artists ranging from new voices like Jane Schoenbrun (“I Saw the TV Glow”) and Duke Johnson (“The Actor”) to venerated masters like Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Mike Leigh...

The Crowded Room Review: Apple TV+'s Psychological Thriller Miscasts Tom Holland And Amanda Seyfried
"The comic-book franchise is where traditional movie stardom is going to die," wrote Wesley Morris in a widely-shared 2016 piece for The New York Times. "Every good young actor vacuumed up by a superhero franchise or a megahit movie series costs us a fresh star persona." The statement was relevant just weeks after Tom Holland slung his first web as Spider-Man, and it's relevant now as he plots his path forward as an actor with his fate inside the suit still uncertain.
The fresh-faced innocence he brought to the third cinematic incarnation of a comic-book character within two decades made him a fan favorite in the "Avengers" series. Any audience who saw the final two chapters can recall feeling the air sucked out of the room when he vanishes in "The Snap" — and remember cheering when he re-emerges in the grand finale battle. As arguably the only star birthed by participating in the Marvel machine,...

Amid a host of lawsuits by foreign productions looking to recoup money from Romania’s beleaguered cash rebate system, industry insiders say the situation has reached a crisis point, with one leading U.K. financier and executive producer warning that the government runs the risk of “obliterating foreign direct investment” into Romania if a resolution isn’t reached in the coming weeks.
Nearly a dozen lawsuits are currently active in the Romanian court system, which last month ordered the government to pay roughly 642,000 plus legal fees to the producers of “The World to Come” (pictured), writer-director Mona Fastvold’s romantic frontier drama starring Vanessa Kirby and Katherine Waterston, which filmed in Romania in 2019. The government has appealed the ruling.
The U.K. financier, who has two decades of experience in the country, says that an impasse now dragging into its third year has caused “immense reputational damage” to both the government and the industry.

She will replace Jodie Comer, who exited the project over scheduling. Her reps are negotiating a deal for Kirby, who is coming off an Oscar nomination for her gut-wrenching performance in Pieces of a Woman.
Scripted by Scott’s All the Money in the World collaborator David Scarpa, Kitbag explores Bonaparte’s origins and his swift, told through the lens of his addictive and often volatile relationship with the Empress. Scott and Kevin Walsh are producing for Scott Free. Deadline first broke the news of Scott’s plan to direct the film and reunite with Gladiator star Phoenix in October of 2020, as well as Apple Studios’ commitment to finance and produce the project.

The Court of Appeal ruled that Ingenious’s film tax schemes were trading to make a profit.
UK tax authority Hmrc (Hm Revenue and Customs) has lost the latest installment of its complex and long-running legal battle with film financier Ingenious Media, which will now be looking to claw back at least £30m in legal costs.
In a ruling issued earlier this week, the Court of Appeal concluded that the Ingenious film tax scheme businesses were indeed trading with a view to make a profit. The court said that the 2019 Upper Tribunal (which decided in favour of Hmrc) had been...

In 1850s America, farmers’ wives Vanessa Kirby and Katherine Waterston connect in this powerfully understated drama
“I have become my grief.” So writes Abigail (Katherine Waterston) in the journal that was intended as a ledger for the quotidian details of 1850s US frontier farm life, but turns into a poetic account of her inner turmoil – Emily Dickinson-infused moments of anguish as she stoically chisels ice from the potatoes for lunch. Then one day a wagon rolls past bearing the new tenants to the neighbouring smallholding. The husband barely registers, but the wife, Tallie (Vanessa Kirby), is magnetic: tawny curls, curious eyes seeking out Abigail’s and holding them in a moment of tingling intimacy. Love at first sight is a frivolity not afforded to women who are chosen by their husbands for their “good sense, efficient habits and handy ways”. Still, there’s something between them, something that Abigail,...

Two wives fall in love amid the grinding exhaustion and violence of pioneer life, hoping to build a future for themselves
The World to Come is a tragedy and a love story – and also a puzzle, courtesy of the title. Does it mean the afterlife, the entry into paradise that will be recompense for all the hardship and injustice we’ve suffered here? Or does it mean the future: that progressive yearned-for place in which current bigotries will be abolished, and in fact the place from which we, in the 21st century, are looking back on this tale from the 19th, confident that we are freed from these bygone characters’ constraints, content that we understand what is going on and they may not?

Thanks in no small part to Laura Ingalls Wilder, women's perspectives of 19th century life have been around for a long time, which is perhaps why, even though there is a lesbian love story at the heart of Mona Fastvold's latest film, it still feels very familiar. But The Little House On The Prairie stories are a sunny stroll compared to this rather bleak tale of life in upstate New York.
Abigail (Katherine Waterston) and her husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) cope with loss and loneliness in what feels like less like a world that's coming than the edge of the existing one. When newcomers Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) and Finney (Christopher Abbott) arrive in town, the women strike up a friendship, but soon they're swapping a lot more than just cornbread recipes.
Framed by voice-over diary entries from Abigail, these interludes at first offer atmosphere - as she talks about how "the water froze.

Social distancing, mask wearing also end from that date.
English cinemas will be permitted to resume 100% capacity screenings from July 19, following the UK government’s commitment to the final stage in its roadmap out of lockdown.
Prime minister Boris Johnson said he expected the final stage to go ahead as planned, with social distancing rules to be scrapped from that date, including for indoor entertainment venues.
The new rules are subject to a final review on July 12.
Mask-wearing will no longer be compulsory, meaning those attending cinemas will not have to wear one in any part of the building including foyers and screens.

Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov is banned from leaving his home country and thus cannot legally attend the Cannes Film Festival this summer, where his film “Petrov’s Flu” will debut in competition, his lawyer told Afp Monday.
The 51-year-old helmer was sentenced in June 2020 to a three-year suspended prison sentence and issued a fine over a case of embezzlement.
His supporters argue that the case against him was politically motivated, since his daring work engages with politics, sex and religion in ways frowned upon by the Russian state, which is calling for a return to more conservative “traditional” values.

A total 139 features, short and mid-length films are screening in the Harbour, Bright Future, Cinema Regained, Classics and Short and Mid-Length Film sections. Harbour is the festival’s newest and largest program.

You smell like biscuits. Of all the details comprising Tallie and Abigail’s first kiss in Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come, this reaction, which comes from Abigail, may be the most surprising and disarming — moreso, even, than the fact that it’s a kiss between two married women in 19th-century America. It’s a covert but not wholly unexpected gesture between wives whose passions seem only to spring to life while their husbands are away. It’s a surprising line, in part, for containing so much. You smell like biscuits: like comfort,...

After breaking out with her impressive directorial debut, 2014’s The Sleepwalker, Mona Fastvold wrote Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux with her partner Brady Corbet, and The Mustang with other collaborators. She takes on a different role with her second feature The World to Come, directing an original script by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard, and making the film completely her own.
In the 1850s-set drama, Fastvold explores the interior lives of two women Abigail (Katherine Waterston), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie (Vanessa Kirby). Taking place on a farm in Upstate New York, Abigail has lost her only child to diphtheria. Katherine Waterston is as fatigued as anyone by what she describes as “the absence of flow” created by a life lived on Zoom. But even from a virtual interview out of her London home, close to where she’s filming the third “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the actress is poised, curious, and overflowing with openness about her experience filming “The World to Come.”
The ravishing romance takes place in 19th-century upstate New York, where two women (Waterston and Vanessa Kirby) cobble together an intellectual and erotic connection amid the soul-crushing frontier. It’s easily career-best work from this focused, fiercely intelligent performer who first wowed audiences in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice.”
“Paul really did pluck me from obscurity,” she said of her breakout role in the shaggy 2014 Thomas Pynchon adaptation, where she starred as the elusive femme fatale Shasta Fay, ever out of Joaquin Phoenix...

“With little pride and less hope, we begin the new year.” So starts Mona Fastvold’s mournful frontier romance “The World to Come,” on January 1st of 1856. (The film’s Sundance screening follows a premiere at last summer’s Venice Film Festival and precedes an imminent theatrical release.)
The words are written in the diary of young wife Abigail (Katherine Waterston), who reads them as an ongoing narration of her inner thoughts and torments. She and her husband, Dyer (co-producer Casey Affleck), have recently lost their little girl to diphtheria, and the space between them is miles wide. He has channeled all his emotions into their struggling farm, a hardscrabble plot in frigid upstate New York. She is pouring hers into the diary, when she’s not cooking, cleaning, milking cows and taking care of Dyer.
Into this austere existence blows Tallie (Vanessa Kirby), an outgoing new neighbor who is...

The first two months of 2021 have brought no shortage of compelling, even great, movies and TV series but in March we’re getting some full-on events. A big, new animated Disney movie! Eddie Murphy returns to one of his most famous roles! Godzilla fights King Kong! Zack Snyder fights the limitations of a theatrical running time! It’s madness in the month of March! (If only there was some kind of pithy phrase that could be used to describe such a thing).
March will also see the departure of a...
