Just last week, Sony announced that they would be giving the “Searching sequel” Missing a theatrical release on January 20, 2023 – and now they have unveiled the trailer for the film! You can check it out in the embed above.
Made on a budget of less than 1 million, the mystery thriller Searching (read our review Here), which played out entirely on computer and smartphone screens, earned over 75 million at the global box office when it was released back in 2018. So the creative team behind that film have gotten back together to bring us the mystery thriller Missing, which will be presented in the same way as Searching was.
Details on the plot of Missing have been kept under wraps up to this point, but now we have a synopsis:

Made on a budget of less than 1 million, the mystery thriller Searching (read our review Here), which played out entirely on computer and smartphone screens, earned over 75 million at the global box office. So it’s no wonder a sequel was given the greenlight… but since this was going to be a sequel in name only, it’s also not very surprising that it received a title change along the way. The “Searching sequel” is called Missing, and it was set to reach theatres on February 24, 2023. Deadline reports that it has now been moved forward to the new release date of January 20, 2023.
Details on the plot of Missing are being kept under wraps. We do know the film stars Storm Reid (The Invisible Man) and Nia Long (NCIS: Los Angeles).

Ashley Judd is set to star in the upcoming YA drama “#Fbf,” a movie that takes place almost entirely on smartphones and computer screens.
The format, initially seen in films like “Searching” with John Cho, allowed the actors to be filmed in their homes in Los Angeles, Nashville, Anaheim, New York and other remote locations amid the pandemic.
“#Fbf” follows teenager Annie (Cree Cicchino), who accidentally takes her mom’s (Judd) laptop instead of her own to visit her father in New Jersey. Annie soon realizes the laptop is everything she needs to pose as her mom for the day, repair her parents’ marriage and encourage them to move back from Florida.
Ilyssa Goodman (“A Cinderella Story”) is directing the film from a screenplay that she wrote with Ashley Peter (“The Morning Show”).
The cast also includes Kylee Russell (“Z-o-m-b-i-e-s”), Emily Skinner (“Andi Mack”), Ciara Riley Wilson (“Kim Possible”), David Barerra...

Timur Bekmambetov’s thriller “Profile,” which made waves at Berlin in 2018 for being seen entirely through a computer screen, has landed worldwide distribution from Focus Features.
Focus will release “Profile” in theaters domestically on May 14, 2021, while Universal Pictures will distribute internationally, excluding Cis/Russia.
“Profile” was shot using the Screenlife format, a platform pioneered by Bekmambetov that allows for the action to play out through webcams, computer screens, smartphones and social media windows. The technology has recently become more common in films like the horror movie “Unfriended” and the thriller “Searching” starring John Cho. Most recently, Bekmambetov was a producer on “R#J,” a new take on “Romeo & Juliet” for the TikTok era that also used Screenlife and premiered at Sundance.
The story of “Profile” follows an undercover British journalist in her quest to bait and expose a terrorist recruiter through social media, while trying not to be sucked in...

Sony made a tidy profit on the first film, so Searching 2 is on the way!
Sony is on the lookout for a new franchise with legs, and Searching might very well be it. 2018's John Cho-starring laptop thriller only cost about $880,000 to make, and raked in $75 million globally, so why not, eh? It also had really positive reviews for the most part, which never hurts a smaller scale film festival acquisition - Searching was originally picked up at Sundance for just $5 million.
Deadline confirms that Sony’s Stage 6 Films is now developing a Searching sequel with a brand new plot and cast, but one that will almost certainly bring back the original creative team of Timur Bekmambetov, Sev Ohanian, Adam Sidman, and Natalie Qasabian for a potential feature anthology series.

Exclusive: You don’t see that many films acquired at Sundance getting sequels, but Sony’s Stage 6 Films is working on a second installment of Searching, the thriller about a father’s desperate search for his missing daughter that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions bought for $5 million in a world rights deal and watched become a breakout hit that grossed $75 million worldwide. It was released by Sony’s Stage 6 Films and Screen Gems.
Directed by Aneesh Chaganty and starring John Cho and Debra Messing, the original cleverly turned the computer screen into a cinematic canvas as a father accustomed to parenting through iMessages and quick FaceTime chats, realizes his daughter has gone missing and uses the laptop she left behind to locate clues to find her before it is too late.
That film turned out to be the bargain of 2018 Sundance, much the same as the $6 million A24 acquisition The Farewell...

Anita Briem, Neil Sandilands, Rex Linn, Simon Rex, Sam Adegoke and Christopher Matthew Cook co-star.
