Veteran composer Vanraj Bhatia, who provided the soundtrack to India’s new age cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s, has died in Mumbai. He was 93 and is understood to have been in poor health for some time.
Born in Bombay, as the metropolis was known as then, in 1927, Bhatia studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the Conservatoire de Paris in the 1950s.
Upon his return to India, Bhatia enjoyed a successful career as a composer for advertising commercials through the 1960s. During this time, he also composed scores for several documentaries.
Bhatia debuted as a composer for feature films with “Ankur” (1974) directed by Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of India’s New Wave cinema movement, an independent alternative to mainstream commercial cinema. The pair formed a fruitful partnership and worked together on a total of 16 films including “Nishant” (1975), “Manthan” (1976), “Bhumika” (1977), “Kondura” (1978), “Junoon” (1978), “Kalyug” (1981), “Mandi” (1983) and...

Failure, competition and the pressure of staying relevant perennially looms on actors in Bollywood. Some can cope with it and some cannot. Those who cannot, often quit and opt for a different path in another fields.
The author has jotted out a few names, who courted the limelight for a while but could not continue their journey in the world of glitz and sparkle called Bollywood.
Imran Khan
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan has quit Bollywood as an actor. He broke the news earlier this month. Imran made his debut in Hindi film industry in 2008 with the hit film "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na". However, most of what followed was forgettable fare as "Luck", "Kidnap", "I Hate Luv Story" and "Break Ke Baad". There was "Delhi Belly" in 2011, but that was an odd success, clearly not enough. Imran's last big screen outing was in 2015 with Kangana Ranaut...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Mani Kaul's Duvidha (1973) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema. When Mani Kaul’s debut film Uski Roti premiered in the Sunday evening slot, reserved for popular films, on India’s public television channel, Kaul famously said, “They could have had a programme called Shastriya Cinema or something and shown Uski Roti there—like they have Mallikarjun Mansur on Shastriya Sangeet!” The Hindi word shastriya means classical. Kaul’s affinity for the “classical” is obviously an act of distancing from the “popular” but not harking back to any notion of a cinematic legacy. What he chooses to align with, on the contrary, is a legacy of classical arts that is pre-cinematic. It is natural then that his films, including Duvidha (1973), are a collaborative but non-linear mixing of fine art, folk music, literature, and myth.

Bhonsle (SonyLiv)
Starring: Manoj Bajpayee, Ishita Chakraborty Singh, Virat Viabhav, Abhishek Bannerjee, Santosh Juvekar
Directed by Devashish Makhija
Strightaway, this is a persuasive and powerful film that shouldn’t be missed by anyone who has watched any film set in the cultural-political dynamics that govern life in the Mumbai chawls. As relevant as Saeed Mirza’s Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro and N Chandra’s Ankush (the two films that are most decidedly the reference points) Bhonsle has a gut-wrenching immediacy to it.
A palpable sense of infinite injustice seeps into a world and a culture rapidly being taken over by goons. Most unexpectedly the retired cop Ganpath Bhosle takes on the role of an unlikely hero, as he protects a young Bihari girl and her kid-brother from the wrath and disdain of a political henchman who want to use the ‘Marathi Manoos’ card to send all migrant labourers back to Bihar.

The startling female hero of Revolver Rani (Rr) has been warmly received by critics. And Kangna Ranaut is all set to do another film with the Rr director Sai Kabir. Says Sai Kabir, "Yes I'm doing a film called Divine Lovers with Kangna and Irrfan in the lead. It would be a complete contrast to Revolver Rani. It won't be loud, aggressive, violent and splashy like Rr. But again Divine Lovers would be about the Great Indian Dream." Divine Lovers would be set in Mumbai and Aligarh. Reveals Sai, "It'd be set in the lower middleclass and it would be also about the moral corruption of the middleclass." Also on the anvil is the sequel to Revolver Rani. "I want to build my hero Alka Singh as a franchise. She'll be my toy to tell many stories. I want her to do many things in the future including fight America and revive the Soviet Union.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur’s documentary film on P.K. Nair, the founder-director of the National Film Archive of India (Nfai) premieres at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles on April 14.
“You can see a hundred years from now; you can see a certain aspect of life which was there only at the time, on that day. It means a lot. It means more than Greek Tragedy where everything is heightened beyond compare. But those very small things get so beautifully manifest (on film). It is the very, I think, soul of art of any kind.”
-Kumar Shahani
For anyone who has spent time on the campus of the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune and visited the National Film Archive of India only a couple of blocks away, it is impossible to not think of the omnipresent influence of P. K. Nair, the long-serving director and founder of the Archive.

“Why should P.K.Nair not be a recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award? After all, whatever we have of Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra, meaning just the first and last reels of the film, are there due to Nair’s unwavering vision and his endless efforts. Again, the only complete Phalke film available to us, namely, Kaliya Mardan (1919), is there because of Nair. If someone like him is not deserving of the Phalke Award, one wonders, who is?”

Peepli Live
Peepli Live is a fruit of a tree which modern directors like Shyam Benegal, Kundan Shah, Saeed Mirza and many others nourished with a wholesome diet of realism and irony. Director Anusha Rizvi’s decision to tell a story closer home in Peepli Live rather than something that’s set in the Swiss Alps or the Boulevards of New York or for that matter the suburbs of Mumbai or seedy by lanes of Delhi perhaps marks a revival of that fast wilting tree.
Peepli Live at an apparent level tells the story of the plight of small farmers in India – which surprisingly remains untold until now, despite its gravity – but could stand for everything that’s going wrong with the fast evolving India Story, a term that today’s business leaders throw around callously. A part of India seems to be moving so fast that it’s threating...
