Netflix, in partnership with non-profit Creative UK, has unveiled the six teams and projects selected for Breakout, the filmmaking programme launched to discover and support talented up-and-coming storytellers in the UK, with participants including Screen Star of Tomorrow Helen Simmons and children’s TV star and presenter Kim Tserkezie.
Emerging filmmakers are given the funding and opportunity to advance their debut feature into development with the partnership and support of Netflix. The selected teams comprise talent who haven’t yet made a feature but whose work has garnered industry or public attention.

– The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the films that will play in the Special Screenings section of AFI Fest 2016 presented by Audi, which includes three World Premieres and four additional highly anticipated films.
The World Premiere of the CG-animated film “Moana” will play in the Special Screenings section, along with “Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds” and “Toni Erdmann.” Also bowing as Special Screenings will be the World Premieres of “Miss Sloane” and, as previously announced, “The Comedian.”

Film London has awarded 21 filmmaking teams across the capital with funds to make short films through its London Calling and London Calling Plus initiatives. A record 620 applications were received this year.
The scheme invests more than $300,000 (£200,000) in London’s short filmmakers with production funding, training and a platform to showcase the films to the industry.
Last year’s slate included Riz Ahmad’s Daytimer, which premiered at Sundance; the BAFTA-nominated Three Brothers; and Loco Award-winning Two Dosas.
This year’s slate includes Chick or Treat from rising internet stars Mandem On The Wall; The Monster, which will star Richard Glover (A Field In England, Sightseers); Rainbow Party, which marks the directorial debut of BAFTA-nominated producer Eva Sigurdardottir; and Above, which was scripted by award-winning playwright Michael Bhim.
