Since 2007, we've done our best at Tubefilter to exhaustively track, cover, and analyze the paradigm shifts and idiosyncratic complexities of the point at which the business of digital entertainment, social media, and creators meet.
We've witnessed the vast majority of the world having no idea Wtf a YouTuber is to it becoming the most desired profession among America's youth. We've seen traditional entertainment recoil at relatively open and global internet-based distribution mechanisms before wholeheartedly joining the fray. We've written about online video stars' earliest brand deals (I think Threadbanger's branded Janome sewing machine back in 2008 might've been the first) to how some are making $30 to $40 million a year in merch. We've written over 20,000 articles, hosted dozens of events, and conceived of and produced nine (and soon to be 10 as of December 13) Streamy Awards in order to celebrate creators in this ecosystem and their creative works.

This year’s Streamy Awards, co-produced by Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter, are set to ditch the traditional singular host format, in favor of a faction of creators who will head up this year’s ceremony as so-called "collaborators.”
Past Streamys have featured The Try Guys, Jon Cozart, King Bach, Grace Helbig, Tyler Oakley, and Hannah Hart as masters of ceremonies. Instead, this year’s show will feature a number of creator-led segments that the Streamys says serve to emphasize the diversity of the space, including Emma Chamberlain, Mr. Kate, Rosanna Pansino, Mark Rober, Brandon Rogers, Patrick Starrr, and Hannah Stocking. All told, these collaborators count more than 100 million followers across multiple verticals including beauty, comedy, food, and education.

The 9th annual Streamy Awards are about to get a little more muscle behind them. YouTube is partnering with Tubefilter, which oversees the yearly event, and dick clark productions for the awards ceremony, which will take place at the Beverly Hilton on December 13. The 9th annual Streamy Awards is broken up into three separate sections: the Streamy Awards; the Streamys Brand Awards, which returns for a second year; and the Streamys Purpose Awards, which returns for a third. Influencer marketing may be one of the hottest trends in business, but the federal agency regulating it faces many challenges just keeping up with the sector’s rapid evolution and endless new gray areas.
That’s the takeaway from Tuesday night’s Tubefilter panel in Los Angeles, co-sponsored by the actors union SAG-aftra, on Federal Trade Commission rules for giving online influencers cash, free products, or services or other compensation in exchange for a role in their programming.
Over a spirited two-hour discussion, Tom Dadouh, the FTC’s Western Division director, gamely tried to draw what in legal circles is called a “bright line” delineating what’s required in disclosing compensation in online videos. “The agency is acutely aware that, in the explosion of social media, authenticity is really important,” Dadouh said. “The FTC is concerned that consumers value objective endorsers. One of the best, most exclusive interviews we landed at VidCon 2013 was with a 52-foot animatronic fish with seven-inch steel teeth that goes by the imposing name of Sharkzilla. The manmade megalodon is the mascot of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. And after an epic appearance at Comic-Con, he made his way up the California coast to Anaheim to grace the halls of VidCon with his massive presence. The progeny of a 1.5 million-year-old extinct species and savvy mechanics, biologists, and engineers with a fantastic sense of internet culture showed off an insatiable appetite in the presence of YouTube auteurs, aficionados, and fans. He easily chomped down on a bicycle, a couple of surfboards, and the beloved SourceFed couch. Take a look: In between meals, Tubefilter’s very own Drew Baldwin was able to catch up with the hungry fellow in an attempt to get to know the fish a little bit better.

Before the new year, Tubefilter put together a panel around the hot topic of creative marketing on YouTube and beyond: Do Cheaters Never Prosper? Gaming the System in Online Video. Unfortunately, our live stream of the event was not captured, but thanks to panelist TheWillofDC we are able to provide a video of the event. The "Sheriff of YouTube" once again saves the day! Panelists Benny and Rafi Fine of TheFineBros and William Hyde of TheWillofDC discussed the history and definitions of "cheating" on YouTube, focusing on where and when to draw the line between clever marketing and unfair practices. The meat of the panel focused on the "asterisk," a no man's land surrounding branded content and its identity as a commercial advertisement or a proper piece of programming. Check out the great photos from Tubefilter and Snap Yourself! Panelists: Benny and Rafi Fine, TheFineBros These YouTube veterans, whose channel...

Join us as we explore the seedy underworld of "cheating"—a controversial practice among online video producers. What is cheating? Is it really wrong? Where do you draw the line? We'll be surveying the most ingenious techniques in use and decide whether they qualify as "cheating" or not. By discussing and defining "cheating" we can more successfully identify the industry’s best practices in online video distribution. It is our top priority to ensure Tubefilter continues to be a platform for constructive dialogue and a safe environment for opposing views of both attendees and panelists. From category jacking and bait-and-switches, to alliances and straight-up bribery, we're going to get down and dirty with some of the worst (or best) offenders. You won't want to miss this.

Announcing the August 2011 Tubefilter Hollywood Meetup! YouTube and its partner program have opened a clear path to online video monetization. And as we've learned from our panels this past year, building an audience on YouTube is crucial to a successful online video business. But is that all that it takes? Even for the top YouTubers—who pull in six figures in rev share—YouTube is just the tip of the iceberg. Successful video creators are using YouTube to engage and monetize audiences elsewhere—from other platforms, to apps, merch, licensing, and beyond. Entertainment management firm The Collective, whose digital clients like Fred, The Annoying Orange, and iJustine represent 200 million monthly views on YouTube, recently announced a distribution partnership with Blip.tv, which offers significantly higher CPMs to its partners. Cjp Digital Media's Wilson Cleveland has pioneered a business model that renders video rev share an afterthought. Join us as we...

The finale of Syfy's flagship military science fiction television series, Battlestar Galactica, aired March 24, 2009. In December 2009, the Paley Center for Media screened the premiere of Caprica - a BSG spin-off series that serves as a prequel to its predecessor. At the event, Tubefilter's Drew Baldwin spoke with BSG creator and exectuive producer, David Eick and asked whether we can expect to see a Caprica web series. Eick's response? "It's a possibility." Today we learned it's much closer to reality. According to Marueen Ryan, an online BSG series dubbed Blood & Chrome is in the works. Written by BSG and Caprica co-executive producer, Michael Taylor, the show will revolve around the experiences of a young William Adama during the first Cylon War. In the words of Taylor, B&C is "about a young man's initiation into war: both the realities of war as fought by soldiers on the ground (and in Battlestars...

On this week’s episode of The Web.Files the lovely and talented Kristyn Burtt interviews the red carpet guests attending the premiere of DailyMotion’s new comedy series, Squatters. For those unfamiliar with The Web.Files, it is a weekly web series that gives audiences an inside look into the web TV space. In addition to hosting, Kristyn Burtt created the show along with the series’ producer, Sandra Payne (Life with Kat and McKay). Also, she looks fetching in a fedora. Squatters is a show about two guys who make a bet to live rent free for a year in New York. And its online home, Dailymotion is a French video site is similar to YouTube, but with more nudity. (Oyez, I hope I don’t get fired before I get my Tubefilter new writer gift basket, complete with complementary Drew Baldwin headshot.) In addition, to the attendees sharing their thoughts on the series,...
