"All I want is for this hour to pass so I can return to building my railroad." - Thomas Durant.
It's not often I agree with Durant on any of his schemes or attitudes, but no truer words were spoken in respect to "Get Behind the Mule."
And maybe I could be more forgiving if this was just another episode in the middle of the season, but as the Hell on Wheels Season 3 finale?
Not only did it fall flat, but I'm still a bit confused by the drastic change in direction after everything that's happened up until now.
Sure, for Season 3, Bohannon got off the revenge path and became focused on the railroad. As in overly focused, and that was fine. The episodes simply brought up a variety of random problems to be quickly solved not so long after, but I still had a sense of hope that through it all,...

“Northern general, southern soldier, working together to unify these United States — it’s what the country needs,” Ulysses S. Grant (guest star Victor Slezak) tells Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount). And Bohannon screwing over Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney), who files an injunction against the Union Pacific in this week’s episode of Hell on Wheels? It’s what the fans want.

You'd think the beginning of this Hell on Wheels episode was really just a Western version of the Maury Povich show with Declan Toole and Elam Ferguson claiming their familial ties to the baby, all while the crowds of workers shout around them and Cullen Bohannon attempted to keep order. It was an out of control madhouse.
Of course, the posturing of both sides was settled by the ever annoying Thomas Durant, offering up a reward for the missing child. Suspicious? This is Durant we're talking about.
But, oh wait, doesn't the town need to move before the bad weather sets in? Pretty sure the baby needs to be saved first before anything happens.
And thus, "Searchers" spent a majority of its time on finding the kidnapped kid, illustrating just how far Ferguson was willing to go and the possible wrong path Sean McGinnes might be headed down.

In Season 3, Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) leaves behind his quest for vengeance and takes on a leadership role with the Union Pacific, racing across the country to beat Central Pacific Railroad in finishing the transcontinental railroad. The second season of the AMC drama series Hell On Wheels takes us back to the post-Civil War era at the dawn of the industrial era. Railroad barons were obsessed with nation-building and the race across the continent in order to secure the future of the United States as a country worthy of competing in the global market. No longer hindered by in-fighting after surviving a bloody civil war that nearly tore the nation apart, it was a time of blossoming freedom and unfettered greed. Yet with the wounds fresh on their bodies and hearts from the recent bloodshed, it was also a time of healing. Everyone wanted to forget the war and move on, but it was a burden everyone bore upon their souls.

Chicago – AMC’s watchable western series “Hell on Wheels” is just good enough to sustain audience interest despite its meandering plot. As soon as Gustavo Santaolalla’s catchy theme music kicks in over the brooding title sequence, it’s effortless to become absorbed within Joe and Tony Gayton’s handsomely photographed dramatization of the first transcontinental railroad’s epic construction in 1865.
The most intriguing aspect about the series is how it parallels the expansion of the railroad with the colonization of America itself, and how necessary progress was forged by men with little more on their minds than self-serving greed. Financier Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney) has figured out an excellent way to make a fortune off the railroad with the help of government subsidies. Since he’s being paid $16,000 per mile, he intends to add as many arcs and curves to his railroad as possible, rather than have it chug straight to its destination.

Hell on Wheels Renewed for Season 2 by AMC
Deadline is reporting that AMC has renewed Hell on Wheels for a second season. The western drama, which has seen its ratings fall in recent weeks, is currently on hiatus for the holidays and will begin airing the final three episodes of its first season on January 1st at 10:00. No word on how many episodes or a possible air date for season 2, but it'll likely consist of 10 more episodes premiering in fall 2012.
Starring Anson Mount (Crossroads), Hell on Wheels follows Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, a man on the hunt for revenge against the Union soldier that killed his wife. The series also looks at the formation of the First Transcontinental Railroad, focusing on Thomas Durant's (Colm Meaney, Star Trek: The Next Generation) Union Pacific, with both main plotlines offering their fair share of collateral damage. What's the best way to distract men from not getting paid? Free alcohol and a boxing match, of course.
Thomas Durant was up to his old manipulative tricks again on "Bread and Circuses," drawing away from money problems and focusing on the more enticing fight between Cullen Bohannon and Elam Ferguson. It's a surprise that not many people can see through his methods, but it makes sense that live entertainment manages to divert attention when each day consists of extremely muddy and tiresome work.
Perhaps that's why Lily Bell can go toe-to-toe with Durant. She gets to wear pretty dresses, goes on picnics and spend time forming her own ways to play her smart cards. And boy, did she play them.
It may have been a brash move to tell Durant that she had the maps the whole time, but it was worth it just to see his frustrated face.

Just as quickly as Hell on Wheels delivered an episode that eased some concerns and fixed certain issues, “A New Birth of Freedom” has arrived to bring all of those issues back twofold. It’s becoming evident that one of the show’s biggest flaws is its lack of truly compelling characters. Last week’s “Immoral Mathematics” flourished because it spent the majority of its time with two of the few characters with any real substance – Cullen Bohannon and the Swede. This week, they’re both put on the backburner. Swede is missing completely save for a few minor scenes, and Cullen spends the majority of his time in the episode with the weakest link of the series – Lily Bell (played by Dominique McElligott.)

I mentioned last week that pilot episodes are a tricky thing to judge the future of a series on. They’re essentially a commercial for what a show aims to be, but more often than not fail to serve as a strong example of what a series will eventually become. Hell on Wheels’ first hour featured many indications it could very well end up being a victim of this phenomenon. It spent quite a bit of its focus on two characters that were killed off before the credits rolled, and the rest of its runtime on necessary but poorly executed (read: boring) narrative setup. Yet, however squandered it was in its first hour, the show’s potential was undeniable. All of the pieces were there – the question of course, was (and still is) whether or not the creative team would figure out how to successfully take advantage of them.

Christopher Heyerdahl makes his first appearance as the Swede in Hell on Wheels 1x02, "Immoral Mathematics," which airs tonight at 10 pm on AMC. He's been getting great reviews for the show (see here), so see the episode if you get a chance. Here is another one, from The Boston Globe:
Indeed, once a character known as the Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) shows up in episode 2, with his silent-picture expressiveness and the kind of threatening presence usually found in Coen Brothers movies, I was fully invested in the show and looking forward to seeing the rest of the 10-episode season. The Swede is just the kind of twisted psycho creep you want to watch closely, the showiest bad guy in the “Hell on Wheels’’ stampede of antiheroes led by financier, swindler, and railroad builder Thomas Durant (Colm Meaney). And here is what the A.V. Club says:

AMC has had one hell of a rough year. Contract disputes, the loss of The Walking Dead executive producer Frank Darabont, money issues, and the critical disappointment surrounding both The Walking Dead and The Killing, has resulted in what originally looked like the network to take HBO’s crown suddenly finding itself losing a lot of its prestige and, in turn, scrambling desperately to get it back. But, to be fair, it hasn’t all been bad news. Breaking Bad just came off one of its strongest years ever, and the critical consensus on the troubled Walking Dead seems to be that the writers have slowly started to address and fix some of the show’s substantial issues. Still, going into AMC’s latest offering, Hell on Wheels, one can’t help but have a drastically lowered sense of anticipation than, say, when Rubicon or Dead first premiered.

Blood will be spilled. Lives will be lost. Fortunes will be made. Men will be ruined.
These are the promises made by the sprawling epic that is AMC's latest attempt at another hit drama. Hell On Wheels might not be groundbreaking, but it is captivating and eager to tell multiple stories of the men and women struggling to find purpose after the end of the Civil War.
The show sets off with a shot to the head, introducing us to Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a former confederate soldier seeking vengeance for the murder of his wife. Thankfully, Bohannon garners a sense of complexity besides his straightforward drive to kill his enemies. He did own slaves, but he freed them before the war even started. He did fight in the war, but it was simply for honor. There's just enough good in him to make him a hero, and just enough...

AMC's new western drama Hell on Wheels premieres tonight at 10 pm, after The Walking Dead.
From all accounts, Christopher Heyerdahl doesn't make an appearance until next week's episode, but critics have been mentioning him a lot in the early reviews. Just for context, most of them are not quite as enthusiastic about the show as they are about his character. (He plays a Norwegian badass called The Swede who works for the show's resident villain, railroad boss Thomas 'Doc' Durant, played by Star Trek's Colm Meaney.)
Here are a few snippets from some of the reviews flooding my inbox this week (careful, there are spoilers):
Tim Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter:
In fact, the best character appears in the second episode but isn’t mentioned in the voluminous press materials or episode synopsis (!). It’s Christopher Heyerdahl, playing a character named The Swede. How is it that in one...
