Yesterday, I wrote about my first year in Los Angeles, which was all just a matter of settling in. Remember, when I moved to La, I knew a grand total of zero people who lived or worked here. I was not laden with contacts and strolling into a situation where everything was guaranteed to work out. Scott Swan and I took a huge chance when we packed up and moved out, and I am so horrified by how little money we had saved that I'm almost embarrassed to say the number. I was insanely naive when I arrived in town. I am still haunted by a choice we made in those early days, when we answered an ad in one of the trades that was looking for writers willing to work on a "per sketch" basis. I forget how much the rate was… $100 or so, but definitely not more than that…...

Roger Corman sat down with Conan O’Brien last week for a spirited interview (promoting his latest Sy-Fy spectacular, Sharktopus Vs. Pteracuda) turning in a charismatic performance that provoked a reaction not unlike Dennis Hopper’s besotted appraisal of Dean Stockwell’s spaced-out lounge lizard in Blue Velvet:
“Suave? Goddamn, you are one suave fucker”.
Suave? Yep, that’s Roger.
O’Brien’s wide-ranging conversation with Corman proved that this storied filmmaker is nothing if not a treasure trove of great Hollywood tales, mainly because Roger himself has instigated so many of them. Not the least being the time he decided to drop acid to better direct The Trip, his 1967 psychedelic-psychodrama starring Peter Fonda and, appropriately enough, Dennis Hopper.
As Roger hauled out the anecdote about his blissful LSD experience for Conan, I had a flashback of my own… to that weekend many moons ago when Tim Lucas, editor of Video Watchdog,...

From Tfh Producer Elizabeth Stanley…
A friend of mine was having trouble with a business colleague and asked an attorney friend what to do. Without hesitation, he answered “Take him out”. “To lunch?” she replied. The lawyer said “No, kill him.”
I couldn’t help but recall this story after Joe and I saw the trailer for Transcendence starring Johnny Depp. If you don’t already know, it’s about what happens when man and machine meld. They could have titled it Him.
In Her, the computer operating system Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johannson) leaves a trail of broken hearts in her wake. But once the brilliant AI scientist Will (played by Depp) has his mind uploaded to a computer, he embarks on an odyssey of global destruction and world domination. Need I say more?

Just announced!
The first slate of SXSW features has been announced, and among them is Adam Rifkin’s reality TV satire, Reality Show. This played as a series last fall on Showtime and has been adapted into a 90 minute feature film. Among the many stars are some Tfh gurus (including Mr. Rifkin himself and Mick Garris) as well as our executive producer, Elizabeth Stanley, in a rare on-screen appearance.
Reality Show is playing alongside other SXSW selections like newly-minted blockbuster king Joss Whedon’s Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing and Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers , which looks like madness and stars James Franco as a white gangster rapper with silver teeth and corn rows(!?!).
Check out the trailer for Reality Show here:...

Inside Broadway held its annual Broadway Beacon Awards on Monday night, honoring Christie Brinkley, Nick Jonas, Iatse Local One President James J. Claffey Jr., and the Millennium Broadway Hotel, where the event was held. The awards show focused on the honorees’ contributions to the theater community, as well as the work that Inside Broadway, a not-for-profit educational theater company, has done with students throughout New York City. The evening included a performance by Elizabeth Stanley, who just finished starring in “Million Dollar Quartet” Off-Broadway, plenty of jokes from entertainment reporter Julie Chang, who hosted the event, and even a surprise performance by Jonas, which incited much squealing from the younger members of the audience. But it was a group of ten students from P.S. 97 in Brooklyn who kicked off the show, performing an adorable rendition of “New York, New York” from the Leonard Bernstein musical, “On the Town,” which prompted.

Nick Jonas and Christie Brinkley cemented their status as stage stars after picking up the top honours at New York's Broadway Beacon Awards on Monday.
Teen idol Jonas was recognised for his recent stint in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, in which he played the lead role of J. Pierrepont Finch before the show closed last month.
Brinkley was the lady of the hour - the former supermodel was honoured for her portrayal of Roxie Hart in hit musical Chicago.
Michael Presser, executive director of Inside Broadway, which hosted the event, says, "Inside Broadway's aim is to pass down the rich legacy of musical theatre to future generations so that the magic, music and universal themes of the genre are not lost but rediscovered... Our honourees this year have each without a doubt greatly contributed to that cause."
The ceremony, held at the Big Apple's Hudson Theatre, featured a performance from Million Dollar Quartet star Elizabeth Stanley.

Trailers From Hell has been alive and kicking for a few years now, the brainchild of director Joe Dante, Jonas Hudson, Charlie Largent, and Elizabeth Stanley. The idea behind the series is to take a movie trailer and put commentary over it, telling the story of said film in the short 2-to-4 minutes running time. Often they get the director of the film at hand, other times you will hear from other industry notables. The results are always fascinating, educational, and fun. We will start featuring Tfh on a regular basis, and hope you enjoy.
Our first entry is from last June, seeing director Mick Garris giving 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea some love.

Michael Stahl-David and Zoe Kazan have signed on to star in the sci-fi/romance indie In Your Eyes, which Brin Hill will direct from a script by Joss Whedon. Producers Ilene Kahn Power and Elizabeth Stanley have secured rights to author Marion Zimmer Bradley's renowned sci-fi novel series "Darkover" says Variety.
The books are set in a solar system where 'Darkover' is the only human-habitable planet of seven planets orbiting a fictional red giant star called Cottman. They detail the colonization on a new planet where the inhabitants begin their own species.
The pair reportedly convinced Bradley's estate that the twenty book property would better be turned into a television series rather than a feature film. As a result they are pitching it to various cable networks.

After the success of HBO's adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones, it shouldn't be surprising that other epic fantasy series are under consideration for translation into television shows. Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover certainly fits the bill, and producers Ilene Kahn Power and Elizabeth Stanley have secured the rights and are developing a series, per a recent press release. Fantasy is not my forte, but Bradley is a revered figure among her fans. Born in New York, she sold her first story at the age of 19 in 1949 and wrote a huge volume of novels and short stories before dying in 1999. She began 30 years of writing about Darkover in 1958, and always insisted (according to the Mzb Literary Works Trust)...
