Ted Ligety‘s life has changed quite a bit since the first time he skied at the Olympics.
That was in Turin, Italy in 2006. He was 21 years old at the time, and was a relative newcomer to the field, in his first season of senior competitive skiing. He was just happy to be at the Olympics at all, and didn’t really have his sights yet set on any medal, let alone a gold.

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea officially begin with the opening ceremony on Friday night, February 8, launching two weeks of competition that will showcase the world’s best skaters, skiers, snowboarders, hockey players and more. But of course the most important question is, how well can they cha cha?
“Dancing with the Stars” returns on April 30 for its 26th season, but it will be an irregular competition in more ways than one. First, the season will last only 4 weeks, far shorter than the 10 to 12 weeks we usually get. Second, the season will consist entirely of athletes, which means the show will be well positioned to recruit some Olympians fresh off their glorious victories — or perhaps their tragic defeats. And this wouldn’t be the first time. Ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White both competed on “DWTS” (season 18) immediately after winning gold medals in the 2014 Winter Olympics in...

In an attempt to soften the blow of the Us losing every event on Saturday, NBC spent much of its primetime coverage on non-competition videos. The first was a story about an American paralympic swimmer, Jessica Tatiana Long, meeting her Russian birth parents for the first time. A story that NBC felt couldn’t be told without clips of Anastasia. (Makes sense to me.)

The USA gained another gold medal on Feb. 19, when Ted Ligety, 29, finished in first place in the men’s giant slalom event. Americans celebrated the sweet victory but Ted’s reaction was even sweeter!
It was his second career gold medal in the event, but Ted Ligety wanted this victory more than anything. The skier from Park City, Utah had been waiting for years for this moment, and he finished Wednesday’s giant slalom event in a fittingly dramatic way.

Ashley Wagner probably won’t win an individual medal in Sochi. But there’s got to be some sort of award for her faces — she’s as animated as Jim Carrey in The Mask, only without the benefit of, you know, actual animation. Need even more proof? Let’s start things off by counting down Ashley’s top 5 expressions while receiving her disappointing short program score:
1. ”Umm, exqueeze me? Baking powder?”
2. ”Yo, are you hearing this? Tell me you’re hearing this.”
3. ”Oh crap, am I supposed to look like a CoverGirl right now?”
4. ”Eyyyy!”
5. ”Whatever, I’m so over it.

Russian figure skater prodigy Yulia Lipnitskaya, 15, fell on the ice during her short program on Wednesday, dashing her dreams of winning a gold medal.
Lipnitskaya nailed her first two jumps, a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, but fell on her last jump, a triple flip, gracefully tumbling on the ice before recovering. Lipnitskaya didn’t let the fall stop her from finishing her routine with two beautiful spins – the highlights of her performance.
“It was just a technical error. She came too close to the boards. There was no pressure,” Lipnitskaya’s coach said of the fall.
Lipnitskaya may have taken a tumble, but she remains in competition and will perform in the free skate Thursday, though it is unlikely she will medal. Lipnitskaya ended the short program in fifth place with a score of 65.23, about nine points behind front runner Yuna Kim of South Korea. Still, fans are still rooting for the 15-year-old wonder,...

All bets are off when it comes to the 2014 Olympics. Russia’s Men’s Ice Hockey team was expected to do extremely well, but were shockingly eliminated on Feb. 19 when they lost 3-1 to Finland.
No home-rink advantage there. With a goalie as strong as Tuukka Rask, it was impossible for Russia’s hockey team to overtake Finland’s in the Olympic games in Sochi, causing them to lose in the quarterfinals.
Russia Loses In Olympics’ Men Ice Hockey

Juhamatti Aaltonen and Teemu Selanne scored early goals at the Boyshoy Ice Dome for the Finns, followed by a later shot by Mikael Granlund. Goalie Tuuka Rask made a whopping 37 saves.

Three periods and an overtime wasn’t enough to determine a winner in the heated hockey matchup between Russia and the United States on Feb. 15. It came down to a shootout, and one American skater in particular, T.J. Oshie, made sure that the U.S. would not be denied.

T.J. Oshie Helps Team USA Shock Russia
U.S. coach Dan Bylsma put T.J., 27, onto the ice for six shootout attempts as the U.S. and Russia went back and forth in an eight-round shootout — he scored four times. Some of T.J.’s goals kept the U.S. in the game, but none of his scores were bigger than the last one that won the game...

Aside from watching skeleton slider Noelle Pikus-Pace finally win her Olympic medal, there wasn’t much to love in NBC’s primetime broadcast on Valentine’s Day. Commentator Scott Hamilton referred to the men’s free skate as “disappointing,” and Ted Ligety admitted he “choked” in the Super Combined. On the upside, I did have time to wonder how many people have sang, “I like the way you work it, Ted Ligety” to the tune of “No Diggity” to him, so that’s something. (Update: At least one.) Here we go.

Hopes were high for Chicago native Jason Brown, 19, after a promising short program on Feb. 13 left him in medal contention. However, his Feb. 14 free skate routine fell way short of the golden mark.
Jason Brown had the nation buzzing on Feb. 13 when his impressive short program in the Sochi Winter Olympics left him in sixth place, less than a point out from third and in serious medal contention.
Olympics — Jason Brown Loses Free Skate
At the end of the day it was Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan who walked away with the gold medal, despite falling in the midst of a quadruple jump that seemingly put him out of contention. Canada’s Patrick Chan stole silver, while Kazakhstan’s Denis Ten won bronze. Russia’s Evgeni Plushenko was favored to win big, but he drew the ire of the motherland when he dropped out last minute due to spinal pain.

The 2014 Winter Olympics are less than a month away, and YouTube has revealed the platform through which it will provide expansive coverage of the Games. The top video sharing site has debuted its Team USA hub, which will provide behind-the-scenes news and features on the American athletes who will travel to Sochi, Russia to compete with the world's best. As noted in a report by Adweek, YouTube can't show actual footage and highlights from the Olympics, since NBC has all of the broadcast rights locked up and will utilize its own online hub. Therefore, it is going for the next best thing: The sort of human interest stories that give Americans a reason to watch sports like curling and luge that would otherwise never cross our radars. Here's the second episode of one of the hub's first web series, which follows alpine skier Ted Ligety as he prepares for his assault on the Russian slopes.
