Abitur 1960, military service. Bank apprenticeship, 1964 commercial assistant examination. Studied economics and agriculture at the Universities of Frankfurt, Giessen and Kansas State, USA; graduated in economics in 1969 and received his doctorate (Dr. agr.) in 1975.
1970 to 1973 research assistant at the Institute for Agricultural Management at the University of Giessen. 1973 to 1976 personal assistant to Liselotte Funcke, Vice President of the German Bundestag. 1976 to 1987 entrepreneurial activity.
Joined the FDP in 1971; federal treasurer of the FDP from 1987 to May 1999 and since September 2004.
Member of the Bundestag since 1980; from 1985 to 1991 Deputy Chairman of the FDP parliamentary group, from 1991 to 1998 Chairman of the FDP parliamentary group; since October 26, 1998 Vice President of the German Bundestag.
