1966 Abitur at the Humanistisches Gymnasium in Tauberbischofsheim. 1966 to 1968 military service, retired lieutenant. 1968 to 1973 law studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, scholarship holder of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation; 1973 1st and 1976 2nd state law examinations; 1977 to 1980 research assistant at the Institute for Tax Law at the University of Münster.
1980 Head of the Press and Public Relations Department of the Münster Chamber of Industry and Commerce, 1984 IHK Managing Director, since 1994 on leave of absence for the duration of membership in the German Bundestag.
