The Broken News season two on Zee5 has been released, and this time it continues to expand on the characters that were built up in season one. Season one ended on a high, which set the tone for the next one, which was released on the weekend. Many characters influence the leads and guide them towards a better solution in life. The Broken News has a couple of them who take the right step, and a few take the wrong one, each charting a journey based on the choices they made.

The Broken News Season 1 ended with Radha Bhargava going to jail for accessing confidential files about Operation Umbrella and exposing them to the public. Dipankar Sanyal openly branded her a terrorist, and this led to her arrest, which she wholeheartedly contested and vowed to fight the injustice done to her. The Broken News is all about the world of television news media, where everyone is crazy about getting TRPs for their respective organizations. The show mirrors real-life instances many have not seen on live television and fictionalized all of them to show audiences the reality.
Spoilers Ahead
What did Dipankar want?
Season two begins with Kamal covering the death of Radha Bhargava and claiming she was killed by the system. Months before the incident, Dipankar Sanyal visited Radha in prison to make her sign the apology letter that would fast-track her bail application. Radha refused to sign it. However, Dipankar...

The Broken News season one was a good insight into how the news media worked, and it mirrored many instances that may or may not have occurred in real life. There is no shortage of television news channels anymore, and each of them runs only after Trp and forgets about presenting news to the people. An opinion and an agenda are already formed, as are the power dynamics when multinational companies begin to invest in them for their own benefit.
Season one ended with Radha Bhargava being sent to prison for speaking up against the Operation Umbrella, followed by Dipankar Sanyal openly declaring her to be a terrorist for speaking up against the surveillance program packaged beautifully as something that would benefit the people in the long run. The second season is directed by Vinay Waikul and written for the screen by Sambit Mishra. They are back, continuing the stories of Amina Qureshi,...

Who said the heroes’ journey can’t take a little detour? In the trailer for “We Are Lady Parts” Season 2, the eponymous female punk band decides to dabble in villainy — to endlessly entertaining results.
Created by “Polite Society” writer and director Nida Manzoor, “We Are Lady Parts” premiered in the U.K. in 2018 and in the U.S. via Peacock in 2021. IndieWire’s Steve Greene wrote at the time that “Each member of the greater Lady Parts quintet could easily handle an episode on their own,” praising a show which is “at its best when it’s breaking free from restraints, too, tossing in a bunch of playful asides and visual diversions.”
“I wanted to go bolder, sillier, darker and deeper and that is exactly what we strived to do,” Manzoor said in a press release accompanying the Season 2 trailer.

Lace up your motorcycle boots and rip off your shirt sleeves: acclaimed sitcom We Are Lady Parts is back for Series 2. Showrunner Nida Manzoor launched her career with Series 1 back in 2021, depicting the exploits of scrappy, all-female Muslim punk band, Lady Parts. Last year, she followed it up with barnstorming action-comedy film Polite Society, for which she won a BIFA for Best Debut Screenwriter. Rocking her way back to the small screen, Manzoor’s Channel 4 hit returns for another run next month, and you can see a selection of first-look images below:
The whole band is back together for this one: Anjana Vasan, who was last seen in the foul-mouthed Wicked Little Letters, returns as lead guitarist Amina, along with bandmates Sarah Kameela Impey, Juliette Motamed, and Faith Omole. Lucie Shorthouse is also back as the titular Lady Parts’ manager, Momtaz. The new episodes pick up with the band after their UK tour,...

Rich and affluent, the Sandells spend their time in a lavish suburb outside of Lund, but things go awry when Stella is suddenly accused of murder. Molded as tense, moody crime fiction with surprising twists, "A Nearly Normal Family" succeeds in capturing the complexities in familial bonds that tend to exacerbate during a crisis.
Stella's boyfriend, Christoffer Olsen (Christian Fandango Sundgren), is brutally stabbed one night, and the day after, Stella is arrested, which compels Adam and Ulrika...

Netflix’s 2023 thriller series, A Nearly Normal Family, introduced Stella, a girl who had a lot on her plate. She was a girl with ambitions and a desire to travel the world. Unfortunately for Stella, life wasn’t easy, and she had to endure a lot. When Stella was a schoolgirl, she was raped by Robin. She did everything she could to fend him off but failed. This shook Stella to the core. Moreover, what further hollowed her trust in her parents was the fact that they didn’t want to press charges against Robin. They believed that if they took the matter any further, it would do them no good. Stella’s image would be vilified, and she would have trouble making friends. Stella didn’t argue, but she held them responsible in her heart, probably even more than Robin. Maybe this was why she transitioned from a joyous...

Long before Jigsaw and Annabelle, Ghostface and Samara—going back to even before Freddy and Jason—there were the Universal Monsters. These were the creatures and character designs who were so iconic that they defined what the horror genre was to most moviegoers during the earliest decades of talking pictures. Primarily released in two film cycles by Universal Pictures across the 1930s and ‘40s (plus a few outliers on both sides of this), the legacy of these films and the people who made them endures still. It echoes in Halloween costumes and TV specials, merchandise toys and candies, it’s even informing recent Blumhouse films and Netflix’s Wednesday. Right now, you can go to any Universal theme park and meet the Monsters as un-goodwill ambassadors at “Halloween Horror Nights.”

Selected for TIFF’s Platform section (Toronto’s only competition section), French-born filmmaker Nora El Hourch pulled from some of her own narrative for her high tempo feature debut. Known domestically as Hlm Pussy and internationally as Sisterhood, El Hourch delves into the intricate dynamics of friendship as it explores how three teenage girls grapple with the implications of the #MeToo movement in the context of their lives, where factors like race, social class, and cultural privilege can occasionally create divisions. At the center of it all we find Amina (Leah Aubert) — stuck in the middle, trying to fit and desperate to belong.…...

Previously, in Class Act Episode 4, the Wonder factory workers, led by their union representative, Mrs. Leduc, went on strike to fight layoffs and unfulfilled promises from their boss, Tapie. He explained the need for a redundancy plan to make the business profitable but promised to personally deposit one million francs into each worker’s account, showing his commitment to their well-being. The strike ended, and Tapie decided to kickstart his TV show with an inspiring speech that garnered support from the audience and even President Mitterrand, who felt enamored by his speech.

If cinema is an empathy machine, to paraphrase the late Roger Ebert, then Agnieszka Holland’s new film is one precision-tooled specimen.
This profoundly moving, flawlessly executed multi-strand drama, shot in stark black and white, tracks refugees from various nations in 2021 trying to cross the border from Belarus into Poland. With inevitably tragic consequences, they become pawns in a gruesome game of “pass the parcel” between guards on both sides of the title’s green border, the dividing line between European Union member Poland and Russia ally Belarus.
Although the violence shown isn’t gratuitous, the suffering in Green Border (Zielona granica) is painfully palpable. There is a moment where a Pole, a minor character in the story, refuses to look at a video on a friend’s phone showing a border guard beating a migrant; Holland’s film implicitly confronts everyone — and that would be most of us — who...

While you’re still in the vice-like grip of its multilevel narrative it may not feel like it, but a film like Agnieszka Holland’s bruisingly powerful new refugee drama ultimately comes from a place of optimism. It is optimistic to expect and to nurture a reaction of potentially motivating outrage, when you portray the brutality of which human individuals, at the behest of human institutions, are capable. It is optimistic to believe that, faced with extraordinary cruelty, a viewer’s ordinary decency will be compelled to rise and rebel. “Green Border” is a heart-in-mouth thriller set on the Polish-Belarusian border that wraps its social critique in the razor wire of punchy, intelligent cinematic craft in order to elicit precisely such emotions. If we can feel the horror, perhaps there is hope.

As if to come to the aid of her national cinema after the debacle that was Roman Polanski’s The Palace, Poland’s Agnieszka Holland, soon to turn 75, restores some of her homeland’s cultural dignity with a devastating exposé that angrily, and quite brilliantly, questions its humanity and political integrity. At 144 minutes, and in black and white, it is not exactly a Trojan horse, and its moral rigor does not come with a spoonful of sugar. But Green Border earns every second of that running time, and with a focus and energy that belies its director’s age. Awards-wise, this may prove to be the international feature to beat.
It begins in October 2021 with Chapter 1: The Family, in which a Syrian couple, Bashir and Amina, their three children and their grandfather are traveling on a plane from Turkey to Belarus. Their mood is upbeat; they are planning to go from Belarus to Poland,...

Barracuda Queens was not just about girls from affluent families; it was also about girls like Mia Thorstensson, who belonged to a not-so-rich, middle-class family. These girls were an example that two classes existed: one did not care about the money they had, while the others worked hard to save it. Mia belonged to the latter group because, since her parents’ divorce, she does not have as much luxuries as Lollo and her friends have.
Mia’s story began with the rest of the girls in the hotel. Since she was there with her friends, she woke up to them being responsible for the repayment of a high bill for their stay at a hotel. Mia could have walked away from her friends at this juncture, but she does not because she knows they have been there for her. Mia was also civil during her stay at the hotel, unlike Lollo and Klara,...

Barracuda Queens, through just six episodes, gave us a peek into the elites of the Scandinavian country of Sweden, and the watch was purely amusing. A bunch of rich girls take it upon themselves to rob the other rich. It began as a necessity, but soon became an addiction. One of the girls who posed as the robbers was Amina Khalil. The girl initially was not a part of the group, as she was introduced as a new girl in town from an affluent family.
Amina had no clue what the actual Barracuda Queens were up to or what they were even capable of. But once she talked to them, she got to know them better. Just like any other rich family in her neighborhood, Amina had also lived across the world with her family, and her worldly knowledge is sort of her attractive feature. Louise, aka Lollo Millkvist, became friendly quite quickly,...

Heist layered with comedy as a genre has been a success in recent times; we have the Ocean movie series and Baby Driver which are some examples that have gotten a lot of acclaim. Even in the TV show spectrum, we have Good Girls, and this time, Netflix Sweden brings us yet another drama with a heist carried by young girls at its forefront. Why, you ask? Because they can. Barracuda Queens is a six-part show with a running time of 35-minute per episode. We get to see young girls carrying out robberies and getting away with it. But will they ever get caught?
Spoilers Ahead
The Bill They Must Settle

How often do we come across stories of rich kids going ballistic about their money? By ballistic, I mean going all around carrying out burglaries and never looking back at it as a crime. We’ve seen Bling Ring by Sofia Coppola, which dealt with a similar setup. Barracuda Queens brings you a story of young girls from affluent families robbing the homes of the rich just because they want to and takes us through the rich and middle-class divide layered with drama and humor.
Directed by Amanda Adolfsson, the six-part Netflix series is set in the year 1995 and begins with a bunch of 20-year-old girls from Djursholm, Sweden, waking up in a hotel far away from their homes, followed by an astronomical bill to settle for the same place. Among the four women in the group—Louise, Klara, Frida, and Mia—only Mia came from a not-so-affluent family. The...

Karima Saïdi’s documentary movingly tries to shore up memories from her mother’s life, but the ethics of the process are uneasy
While caring for her mother Aïcha who has Alzheimer’s, film-maker Karima Saïdi often asks her the simple yet loaded question: “Where do you live?” At one point, her mother replies: “In a handkerchief”; a strangely poetic answer that encapsulates the mental haze of her condition. At other times she speaks of her childhood in Tangier, or the family home in Brussels where she saw her children grow up. As Aïcha’s mind wanders, Saïdi’s documentary transforms into a haven for her memories, which are fading fast.
This cinematic nest is built from old home videos and photographs, which tell of a turbulent immigrant life in Belgium. Saïdi’s older sister Amina was forced into marriage at the age of 15, and her brothers Jamal and Mohamed both died relatively young.
