Sheffield DocFest is on the rebound.
The 30th edition of the prestigious all-documentary film festival in the North of England just wrapped, witnessing a 17 percent increase in attendance by international and U.K. delegates over last year. DocFest is under new leadership, with Annabel Grundy appointed managing director in November 2022 and Raul Niño Zambrano joining as interim creative director last year. Shortly before the start of this year’s event, Niño Zambrano was appointed to the creative director role on a permanent basis.
Speaking with Deadline, Niño Zambrano drew a distinction between this year’s event and the preceding one.

The creators of the Pfizer BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine will take on cancer in National Geographic documentary “The Cancer Vaccine” (working title).
The documentary will follow Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci – the husband-and-wife team who built German biotechnology giant BioNTech – as they and their team race competitors, skeptics, governments and cancer itself to create an entirely new class of medicines that use the body’s own defenses to defeat cancer.
The documentary posits a world where a cancer diagnosis – even the most aggressive kind – no longer means brutal chemotherapy or a death sentence and a world where every individual cancer patient gets a bespoke drug, individually tailored to the unique genetics of their tumor, which could keep patients cancer-free for the rest of their lives. It aims to take viewers to the frontlines of breakthrough science alongside the scientists, researchers and patients at the heart of this endeavor.

National Geographic has announced a documentary special with the working title of “The Cancer Vaccine.”
The documentary special will follow Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci – the husband-and-wife team who built German biotechnology giant BioNTech and created the Pfizer BioNTech Covid Vaccine — as they compete in the race to find a cure for cancer.
The film will chronicle Şahin and Türeci’s creation of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine, which came out of mRNA technology that, for years, had been considered useless. The couple has their own team, with whom they face competitors, skeptics, government officials and the disease itself. The solution may lie in using the body’s defenses to create medicine that can disarm the disease that has killed so many.
Early patient trials have yielded hopeful results, with half of those in BioNTech’s Phase 1 trial showing no sign of relapse after being treated for pancreatic cancer, which kills...

A Nat Geo doc is to follow the husband-and-wife team behind the Covid-19 Pfizer BionTech vaccine as they take on the fight against cancer.
In The Cancer Vaccine [working title], Uğur Şahin and Özlem Türeci’s race to create an entirely new class of medicines that use the body’s own defenses to defeat cancer will be charted, with Academy Award-winning indie Oxford Films and BAFTA-winner Patrick Forbes behind the doc.
The show, which is being unveiled at this week’s Sheffield Doc Fest, begins with the story of Şahin and Türeci’s fight against Covid-19, protecting millions of people around the world from the deadliest pandemic of modern times. Next, the pair have set themselves an incredibly difficult task: to create utterly personalized medicines. The world premiere of ‘Wham!’ about the pop supergroup formed by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley is among the highlights of the 30th edition of the Sheffield DocFest, set for June 14-19 in north-central England.
Multiple Emmy nominee Chris Smith directed the Wham! doc and will appear at Sheffield, conducting a master class after the film’s premiere. In all, Sheffield will host 37 world premieres and 20 international premieres, promising its “most innovative documentary offering yet,” according to festival organizers. [See the program lineup below].
Novaya Gazeta newspaper editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov in Moscow October 8, 2021.
Among other world premieres is The Price of Truth, a film directed by Patrick Forbes about the Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. As Sheffield notes, Muratov auctioned his Nobel award and donated the proceeds to Ukrainian refugees, “and days later a masked attacker poured paint laced with acetone over him,” permanently damaging his eyesight.

Photo: ‘The Phantom’/Paramount+ 'The Phantom’ is a heart-wrenching tale of guilt, innocence, and wrongful convictions. Made by filmmaker Patrick Forbes as a documentary, it follows the life of Carlos DeLuna after he’s accused of murder. Forbes’s film dives into ripple effects that happen to DeLuna and his friends and family. He’s villainized in the media and made out to be a monster, much to the anger of his family. DeLuna had served time in jail long before the murder he was accused of, but it was for nonviolent crimes. As the film progresses, holes are poked on either side of the law, leaving the audience to wonder who was really guilty. “If you’re poor and have no money, and can’t get yourself a lawyer who really gives a shit about your case, you’re going to die,” a defense attorney ruefully notes at one point in “The Phantom,” a fascinating and ultimately infuriating documentary.
This isn’t an entirely fitting description of what befell Carlos DeLuna, a young Hispanic man who was executed in 1989 for a brutal 1983 murder in Corpus Christi that he almost certainly did not commit. Indeed, the film, skillfully and compellingly directed by Patrick Forbes (“Wikileaks: Secrets and Lies”), indicates that DeLuna’s defenders were not indifferent, or incompetent, but grievously (and maybe deliberately) misinformed about mitigating evidence. And yet: The deck was stacked against fringe-dwelling DeLuna, his alibi was never given serious credence, his guilt was all-too-easily assumed by police and prosecutors eager to wrap up what appeared to be an open-and-shut case — and, hey,...

With belching refinery towers against a setting sun being one of its singular widescreen images, Patrick Forbes cinematic and highly emotional film The Phantom, at times feels like a lost season of HBO's True Detective. The documentary covers the tragic case of Carlos DeLuna, a troubled, poverty-stricken latino man in Corpus Christie Texas, who was arrested in 1983 for the brutal stabbing murder of gas station attendant Wanda Lopez, and though a series of public defenders and appeals was given the death penalty and executed shortly after. In the ever increasing American subgenre of 'miscarriage of justice' this one is set apart, because it involves the death penalty. There is no 'release' of DeLuna after...

"He really, truly may be innocent and there's not a damn thing anybody can do to stop this." Greenwich Ent. has released an official trailer for a documentary called The Phantom, made by award-winning doc filmmaker Patrick Forbes. This is arriving in theaters and on VOD at the start of July for those curious to find out the true story. A film about one of the darkest episodes in the long history of American justice. Carlos DeLuna was arrested in 1993, aged 21, for the murder of Wanda Lopez, and protested his innocence until his execution, declaring that it was another Carlos who committed the crime. A case in which – for the first time – it can be proven that the US courts executed a blameless man. This uncovers the shocking truth behind a tale of murder, corruption and lies that unfolded in the dusty, desperate streets of a ...

Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights to The Phantom by BAFTA-winning director Patrick Forbes (The Force).
The Phantom tells the story of a dark episode in the history of American justice, the execution of Carlos DeLuna who was arrested in 1993 aged 21 for the murder of Wanda Lopez. DeLuna protested his innocence until his execution, declaring that it was another Carlos who committed the crime. The prosecution insisted that this other Carlos was a “phantom’ and didn’t exist. Through interviews with witnesses, Carlos’s family members, and legal experts, the film asks whether the judicial system wrongly executed an innocent man, and whether a poor Hispanic youth had any chance within a justice system and a society that by it’s actions seemed to regard him as disposable.

Two new documentaries opened this weekend on VOD and in limited theatrical release, but aside from being non-fiction they share absolutely nothing in common. Well, nothing obvious anyway, but through sheer will power and the finessing of a few adjectives I feel confident saying that these two wildly different films are both focused on exploring the human heart. The Widowmaker is obvious as it’s quite literally a look at a specific type of heart attack that has killed millions of people even though it’s quite possibly a preventable incident. The doc explores a quick and inexpensive test called a Coronary Calcium Scan and its two decade-long fight to be recognized as a crucial tool in the fight against heart disease. My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn is a bit looser fit as it eschews the literal heart in favor of the metaphorical one we attribute with controlling our loves and passions. The...

Decidedly not a thrilling Russian submarine film, The Widowmaker documents the story of another vessel dwelling beneath the surface: the human heart. This most vital organ is under attack — heart disease is the nation's biggest killer, with over 600,000 deaths yearly, greater than every cancer combined. Director Patrick Forbes's film, narrated by the cool voice of Gillian Anderson, traces the modern history of how medical science has attempted to combat the disease. Forbes's interviews with key figures in this battle reveal a political and financial war that has prevented a rational solution from being administered as the death toll continues to rise. The Widowmaker establishes an emotional connection to the epidemic of heart disease through a series of anec...

Wikileaks: Secrets and Lies
Directed by Patrick Forbes
UK/Germany, 2011
Wikileaks: Secrets and Lies functions as a primer to a far more intricate and convoluted tale. If you’ve at all followed the controversy that’s been trailing Wikileaks like a spurned pup since its inception, you likely know much of the raw data on display in this doc. What makes this film worthwhile, though, are the fascinating interviews with the main players of this fiasco. As you may have assumed, the face time with Julian Assange is especially bewitching.
At the core of the film is a simple philosophical battle. Assange argues for the obliteration of secrecy altogether. The major figures behind the New York Times and The Guardian argue for responsible whistle-blowing. And Daniel Domscheit-Berg, former Wikileaks spokesperson, argues for Private Bradley Manning because nobody else will.
Given the initial purpose of Wikileaks, its current state is regrettable.

As usual, he did not appear in person to collect the award for Exit Through the Gift Shop– an amusing faux documentacoops prizery – but sent a message to the audience at the ceremony in London tonight.
Jury chairman Emma Hindley said: "The winner was a unanimous decision. It's a flawlessly made film; original and insightful, it asks questions rather than telling you what to think and at the same time, manages to be very, very funny."
The best documentary series went to Patrick Forbes for Channel 4's insight into Hampshire Constabulary in The Force, while Julian Temple's look at industrial and economic decline of America's Motor City in Requiem for Detroit for BBC2 won best historical documentary.
