In a competitive bidding war, Paramount Players has acquired the rights to develop an untitled country music musical with “Across the Universe” producer Matthew Gross and country music super-producer Mark Bright on board to develop.
Gross brought the project to the studio, and the fact that Bright was producing the film’s soundtrack stood as a prominent selling point in the bidding war. Bright produced for major acts including Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood. Both he and Gross will produce the album, with Gross producing the film.
Following the success of musicals like “The Greatest Showman,” studios are seeing a huge market for the genre, and Paramount is now fast-tracking the pic to pre-production.
The script will be penned by “Galavant” showrunners Kat Likkel and John Hoberg based on an idea conceived by Gross at the 2018 Stagecoach musical festival. Likkel and Hoberg will also exec produce. Shane Stevens and Karyn Rochelle...

Sam and Molly aren’t having a great anniversary. In Jared Stern’s directorial debut “Happy Anniversary,” the long-time couple are ostensibly celebrating three years together when Molly (Noël Wells) makes a startling admission: she’s not happy. That’s certainly one way to put a major pin in Sam (Ben Schwartz) offering up relatively benign wish of “happy anniversary” on, you know, their actual anniversary.
What follows in the new Netflix original is a day-long exploration of the pair’s relationship, complete with flashbacks to their earliest days, and a two-pronged perspective that allows both Sam and Molly to explore the good and bad of their bond, and where it might go in the future.
It’s a cute conceit for a rom-com, but it’s also laced through with truth — Stern himself has admitted it’s a semi-autobiographical tale — and the problems that plague Sam and Molly are extremely relatable.
