- He immigrated to the United States in 1927 where he spoke no English. By 24 years old, he had earned degrees from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. He also earned an LL.B. from Columbia University in New York City.
- He served in the National Youth Administration as a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the War Production Board; was Chief of the Property Control Division, Foreign Economic Administration; and as Editor-in-Chief of the first United Nations Manual of operations.
- He was a consultant, producer and moderator for ABC television programs like "On Trial" and "Perspectives.".
- He was an adjunct professor at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois and Columbia University in New York City.
- He was a partner at the law firm of Hahn & Hessen.
- He authored dozens of law review articles including a 1940 analysis of the Presidential control of foreign relations which was cited by Mr. Justice Douglas in U.S. v. Pink.
- He served on the Nassau County Board of Public Welfare and chaired the Roslyn Harbor Zoning Board for more than 30 years.
- He is predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Judith Morley Levitan; his parents, Shlomo Levitan and Chana Levitan; his brothers, Albert Viton and Max Levitan; and sister, Charlotte Turyn.
- He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Levitan, and her partner, Monica Lord; and son, Stuart D. Levitan.
