After making waves at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the Blumhouse project “Sweetheart” is set to hit digital and on demand platforms.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will offer the film on all major streaming hubs and paid video on demand come Oct. 22, unleashing the creature feature which stars Kiersey Clemons in a harrowing tale of survival.
Up-and-comer Jd Dillard directs and co-writes on the project, which sees Clemons stranded on an idyllic remote island after her small boat sinks. As if basic survival wasn’t taxing enough on the young woman in the daylight, the island turns into a dangerous stalking ground at night when a mysterious predator steps out of the water in search of prey.
The film screens Thursday evening at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, where Dillard will be present. Jason Blum, Alex Theurer, Alex Hyner and Bill Karesh are executive producers on the project. The film co-stars Emory Cohen,...

The Walt Disney Company is soon to conclude its merger with Fox, the most attention-grabbing feature of which will be Marvel Studios being able to use the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters in the McU. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
On top of that, the company is also getting an enormous amount of rights to classic properties that sound like an odd fit for the House of Mouse. For instance, can you imagine Disney’s Alien? Donald Duck vs. Predator? Goofy teaming up with Mulder and Scully to investigate a seriously weird crime? Perhaps the strangest is that it seems that Disney will soon be releasing a remake of The Fly.
Though the story was first published in Playboy in 1957 and the first movie adaptation in 1958 was moderately successful, contemporary audiences are much more familiar with David Cronenberg’s absolutely astonishing take on the concept in 1986’s The Fly.

Stripped-down creature feature “Sweetheart” stars Kiersey Clemons as a shipwreck survivor on an uninhabited island that unfortunately turns out to have one frequent, unfriendly, nonhuman visitor. The sparing glimpses of the scaly whatsis and near-complete lack of dialogue (to a point) make this a reasonably offbeat wade into a familiar Black Lagoon. But despite decent suspense, “Sleight” director J.D. Dillard’s good-looking second feature is a chiller that’s not quite original or stylish enough to be memorable.
Clemons’ Jenn washes onto her isle barely conscious, though in better shape than a fellow passenger (Benedict Samuel) on her storm-downed pleasure cruise, who quickly expires. The situation is dire, but the heroine proves resourceful, quickly figuring out how to spear-fish and make a fire. She also finds signs of prior habitation: A campsite whose vacationers oddly left their gear behind — and more disturbingly, an apparent group gravesite.

The only J.D. Dillard related news to drop in 2018 was that he co-wrote Joe Sill’s directorial debut project Stray. Another tight-lipped Blumhouse production that has been in the can since 2017, we’ve been without updates for more than a year. Dillard broke big with Sleight at Sundance in 2016 and production on his sophomore project took place way back in June of 2017. Sweetheart stars Kiersey Clemons, Emory Cohen and Hanna Mangan Lawrence.

In what’s shaping up to be a busy week for the great and powerful Jeff Goldblum, the Thor: Ragnarok actor has been chatting to Yahoo Movies (h/t Bloody Disgusting) about one of his most famous roles: Seth Brundle.
Yes, David Cronenberg’s The Fly still holds a special place in Goldblum’s heart, as it helped launch his film career back in 1986. It’s also one of his more memorable performances – even by Jeff Goldblum’s own lofty standards – as his wildly eccentric scientist mutated beyond recognition soon after his DNA was fused with that of a bug-eyed insect.
As for Seth Brundle’s status as an atypical ’80s sex symbol, Goldblum told Yahoo Movies the following:
I had my flowy locks at that point. If anything is attractive, at least for me, it is somebody who is passionate and interested in something, and focused on something, and has some brainpower too,...

For much of its 15-year existence, WWE Studios has been mostly known as an outlet for low-budget action and comedy films starring Vince McMahon’s stable of pro wrestlers. But in recent years, the studio has been reaching outside of the ring to produce and distribute films that aren’t related to WWE talent, and this weekend it’s taking its biggest leap yet with “Sleight.” The thriller is WWE Studios’ first Sundance purchase; it is co-distributing with Bh Tilt, distribution wing of Blumhouse Pictures. Out in theaters this weekend is J.D. Dillard’s Sleight, which premiered last year during the Sundance Film Festival and is making its way to the big screen now courtesy of Bh Tilt and WWE Studios. A bit of a genre mashup that brings together the worlds of magic and science fiction, Sleight follows a street magician named Bo (Jacob Latimore), who, after getting mixed up in a dangerous world of crime, realizes that his only way out is through the utilization of his unique abilities.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Dillard about the project, and he discussed his approach to the story of Sleight with co-writer Alex Theurer and his thoughts on his incredibly talented ensemble, which includes the aforementioned Latimore, Dulé Hill, Sasheer Zamata, Storm Reid, and Seychelle Gabriel. Every year, the Sundance Film Festival introduces audiences to bright new filmmaking talent on both sides of the camera. That was certainly the case in 2016 when J.D. Dillard’s crime-thriller Sleight was picked up at Sundance by Jason Blum’s Bh Tilt and WWE Studios for co-distribution.
The movie stars Jacob Latimore (The Maze Runner) as Bo, a young teen living in Los Angeles with his younger sister Tina (Storm Reid), who uses his abilities as a street magician to support them after the death of their parents. On the side, Bo deals designer drugs for Angelo (Dulé Hill), but Bo’s need to make more money to get himself and Tina out of town leads him to use his magic skills to make extra money without Angelo finding out.

J.D. Dillard’s Sleight is an anomaly for many reasons – least of which involves a body-hacking Iron Boy. How about perennial goofball Dulé Hill passing for a drug kingpin (which he does)? Or Jacob Latimore’s ability to wield magic with a coolness that escapes most street magicians? Seriously. How many dudes have ever successfully sparked a relationship with card tricks? Somehow Dillard makes it all work in this criminal caper about territory, respect and escaping the streets, turning sideshow gags into legitimate superhero escapism. It’s like Now You See Me, but with actual stakes. No Horsemen, just desperation cornered by circumstance.
Latimore plays Bo, an orphaned dropout whose sole focus is caring for little sister Tina (Storm Reid). By day, he stuns passerbys with sleight-of-hand illusions, and by night he deals drugs for Angelo (Dulé Hill). It’s not the life Bo chose – leaving an engineering scholarship behind...

It’s been a while since a body horror movie ruined our appetites, so it seems as good a time as any for Fox to remake The Fly. According to Deadline, the studio is abuzz with development plans for remaking David Cronenberg’s 1986 film, which was itself a reworking of Kurt Neumann’s 1958 cinematic adaptation of George Langelaan’s short story. Cronenberg isn’t revisiting his remake, so Fox is currently in talks with J.D. Dillard. If signed, the Sleight director will also co-write the film with his collaborator Alex Theurer.
Though Deadline notes that a remake has been bandied about for some time, no stars are yet attached to the project. We could begin dream casting, though, if we could just figure out who reminds us of a young Jeff Goldblum. (Forget it, he’s, uh, one of a kind.) The Fly is the latest ’80s ...

The Fly, the 1986 body-horror classic that is arguably David Cronenberg’s crowning achievement in the subgenre, is in line for the remake treatment with Sleight writer-director J.D. Dillard.
Per Deadline, Dillard has now officially opened talks with 20th Century Fox to shepherd the modern reimagining alongside long-time writing partner Alex Theurer. Fox is reportedly hoping that said reimagining will spawn something of a franchise revival, and it’s worth keeping in mind that George Langelaan’s original short story – the same one that inspired Kurt Neumann’s 1958 adaptation, and later Cronenberg’s horror masterclass – seeded the creation of two sequels: Return of the Fly and Curse of the Fly.
The story goes that a scientist hellbent on breaking new ground in teleportation accidentally transforms himself into a grotesque, vomit-spewing human-fly hybrid. A street-wise crime caper about a bustling magician who moves from sleight-of-hand card magic to drug dealing on the boulevards of L.A., Sleight combines a raft of interests, including hip hop and sci-fi, from its young director and his writing partner Alex Theurer. The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

We might look back to 2015’s 10 film line-up as a true vintage year for the Next section. With the likes of Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, Sebastián Silva’s Nasty Baby, Matt Sobel’s Take Me to the River, Sean Baker’s Tangerine and section winner Josh Mond’s James White, we’d be hard pressed to say that this year’s 10 selected film selection is a better crop, but so far with names such as Tim Sutton and his super secretive third film (Dark Night – see pic above), video helmer we adore in Nicolas Pesce’s debut (The Eyes of My Mother), short film Yearbook fest winner Bernardo Britto’s first (Jacqueline Argentine), big Slamdance home run hitter with The Dirties’ Matt Johnson (Operation Avalanche) and the Venice to Park City bound The Fits from Anna Rose Holmer are all films we eagerly await. Here is the 10 section of what the fest calls “pure,...
