Lisa Murkowski was born on May 22, 1957 in Ketchikan, Territory of Alaska [now Alaska], USA. She has been married to Verne Martell since August 22, 1987. They have two children.
In 2010, she was defeated in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate by Tea Party-backed candidate Joe Miller. She launched a write-in campaign and won the election with 39% of the vote and became only the second U.S. senator in history to win election as a write-in candidate and defeat candidates with ballot access, after Strom Thurmond in 1954.
