National Geographic’s The First Wave took home the top award at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards in New York City on Thursday.
Matthew Heineman’s documentary details the first four months of the Covid-19 pandemic in NYC, as healthcare workers at Long Island Jewish Medical Center risked their lives in the epic battle to keep the virus at bay.

Showtime is continuing its newsmagazine series Vice.
The premium network has renewed the series, which comes from Shane Smith’s youth-focused media company, for a third and fourth season.
The third season will launch on May 1 and will run eight episodes through June 19 with a furth eight episodes airing later this year.
The half-hour series will feature immersive reporting from the frontlines of global conflict and civil uprisings and this season will feature new stories from its team of global correspondents.
Vice has run for two seasons on Showtime, having previously aired six seasons on HBO.
The reporting team includes a diverse group of journalists, including Hind Hassan, Alzo Slade, Seb Walker, Paola Ramos, Gianna Toboni, Ben C. Solomon, David Noriega, and Krishna Andavolu.
Produced by Vice News, Beverly Chase is the executive producer and showrunner for Vice. Craig Thomson is co-executive producer, and Subrata De is the senior executive producer for the series.

CNN was the major winner on night one of the 42nd annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards, winning seven awards, while CNN exec VP Ken Jautz was named one of this year’s charman’s awards honorees. PBS’ “Frontline” was the most-honored program, with three Emmys.
The winners of the news categories were announced Tuesday night by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The news and documentary Emmys were presented this year as two individual ceremonies: categories honoring TV news on Tuesday, and categories honoring documentaries on Wednesday.

Ozy Media CEO Carlos Watson has informed the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that he will no longer host the documentary portion of the 42nd News & Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday night.
Watson’s decision to step down comes following a New York Times report on Monday questioning the validity of Ozy’s various traffic claims, and revealing that Ozy co-founder Samir Rao had posed as a YouTube executive, touting Ozy’s success, during a conference call with Goldman Sachs bankers in February.
“Carlos Watson has graciously reached out to us and asked to be removed from his hosting duties tomorrow night so as not to distract the focus from the talented nominees in the documentary categories of the 42nd News & Documentary Emmy Awards,” NATAS said in a statement.

This year the 81st annual Peabody Awards are being virtually presented over the course of four days. The first batch of eight were announced Monday, June 21, with another seven following suit the following day.

Vice is to relaunch its nightly news show, “Vice News Tonight,” in a new hour-long live format on March 4 on Vice TV. Vice has named TV news veteran Nikki Egan as executive producer of the newscast, which will air live, Monday through Thursday. Prior to Vice, Egan was at MSNBC for 17 years.
Vice announced last August that “Vice News Tonight” would be moving to Vice TV (formerly known as Viceland), the basic cable network joint venture of Vice Media and A+E Networks. Its previous home, HBO, opted in June not to renew the program, which was then half hour in length and pre-taped.
Vice has also made 20 new hires in the run up to launch, including Todd Zwillich as Washington, D.C., deputy bureau chief, Emily Drew as senior broadcast producer, Jego Armstrong as senior producer, Sarah Svoboda as producer, Jana Lerner as field producer, and Jon Eiseman as director of audience development.

The Sundance Institute has added 32 projects to its Frontier lineup for its 2020 Sundance Film Festival, including “Chomsky vs. Chomsky.”
The Frontier selection is a curation of cutting-edge independent and experimental media works by innovators and creators across mediums that include biotech, facial recognition, AI, Ar, Vr and big data.
The 2020 edition will return to two dedicated venue spaces at the festival, which are New Frontier at The Ray and New Frontier Central. They will host a variety of media installations. The Sundance Film Festival announced its New Frontier Lineup for the 2020 edition, a curated collection of cutting-edge indie experimental media works by creators who are pushing artistic boundaries in various mediums including rocket travel, biotech, facial recognition, mixed reality (Mr), smartphone Ar, underwater Vr, game engines, big data, AI, the human archive, and innovative uses of SMS text & iPhone video capture.
There are two dedicated venue spaces: New Frontier at The Ray and New Frontier Central, each of which host a variety of media installations, a Vr Cinema, and panel discussions. A month after Showtime revived the weekly “Vice” docuseries that HBO canceled, the digital media company has landed a second docuseries with Hulu called “Vice Investigates.”
Each of the 10 “Vice Investigates” episodes will provide audiences with an in-depth experience exploring timely topics and questions, such as the complex geopolitical divide between Iran and Saudi Arabia; a deep dive into the seldom seen human side of K-Pop rockstars; and a first-hand look at the experiences of intersex and transgender athletes attempting to redefine the gender lines of competition in a non-binary world.
The series will debut its first three episodes on Nov. 1, with the rest rolling out monthly beginning in December.
