Non-profit organization Artist Rights Alliance has issued an open letter focused on the rise of AI in music, signed by over 200 prominent names in the music industry, including Billie Eilish, Pearl Jam, Greta Van Fleet, Jason Isbell, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj,Elvis Costello, Jon Batiste, and Stevie Wonder.
Under the call to “stop devaluing music,” the letter states, “Some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using our work to train AI models. These efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of human artists with massive quantities of AI-created ‘sounds’ and ‘images’ that substantially dilute the royalty pools that are paid out to artists.”
Beyond potential royalty and revenue losses, the letter goes on to push back against the “assault on human creativity” posed by AI. “Unchecked, AI will set in motion a race to the bottom that will degrade the value of our work,” the document reads.

On Thursday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the United States’ very first AI music law: the Elvis Act, which amends pre-existing legislation to protect the voices of artists as property rights.
Signed at a ceremony hosted at a honky tonk in Nashville’s famous Broadway district, the Elvis Act was supported by the initiative, The Human Artistry Campaign, and has a number of prominent supporters, including country stars Luke Bryan and Chris Janson (who were both at the signing), Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., a bipartisan coalition of Tennessee lawmakers, and more.
Amending the state’s pre-existing Personal Rights Protection Act of 1984, the law — formally titled the Ensuring Likeness, Voice, and Image Security Act of 2024 — basically upgrades an individual’s voice to a property right, like their name, photograph, and likeness. Those who knowingly use an individual’s voice “for purposes of advertising products, merchandise, goods, or services, or for purposes of fundraising,...

Seconds after Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson entered the holding room where presenters and performers at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala were to take this picture, someone became starstruck — but who that was might surprise you.
“It’s Jelly Roll!” Wilson shouted excitedly as she saw the Grammy-nominated singer-rapper. But the feeling was mutual, as Jelly Roll later murmured, if only to himself, about the surrealness of the moment. He was standing in proximity to Hanks and Wilson as Dionne Warwick sat nearby and members of Green Day were hanging out while everyone waited for one of music’s greatest architects — Davis himself — to arrive.
The interaction was just one of several “pinch-me” moments as the likes of The Isley Brothers, Maluma, Josh Groban, Lainey Wilson and many more came together to take a snapshot with Davis and commemorate the night of amazing music that was to come at the legendary party,...

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. took to the 2024 Grammys stage to pay tribute to the victims of the Supernova music festival massacre that launched the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, 2023.
“Tonight, we celebrate the world of music,” he said. “Every one of us, no matter where we’re from, is united by the shared experience of music. It brings us together like nothing else can and that’s why music must always be our safe space. When that’s violated, it strikes at the very core of who we are.”
Mason also recognized the tragedies at the Bataclan concert hall in Paris in 2015, the Manchester Arena in England in 2017 and the Route 91 Harvest Music festival in Las Vegas in 2017.
Of the attack on festivalgoers on Oct. 7, where more than 360 people were killed and another 40 were kidnapped by terror group Hamas in the worst civilian massacre in Israeli history, he said,...

Travis Scott delivered a stark, aggressive performance of hit songs from his album Utopia at the 2024 Grammys Sunday night.
Standing on an ominous set, surrounded by speakers and smoke and strobe lights, the rapper performed “My Eyes,” “I Know?” and “Fe!N.” Toward the end of the medley, Scott could be seen breaking chairs and other onstage props.
Prior to his performance, Scott spoke in a video about Utopia, which was also nominated for best rap album this year.
“If you could have a feeling of utopia for one second, or one moment, or one minute, one hour, things can be calm even though everything else around you is moving at 1,000 miles per minute,” the rapper said. “And the album is just my trip trying to find that.”

Rapper Killer Mike was detained at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, less than an hour before the 2024 Grammys were set to begin.
Earlier Sunday afternoon, the rapper won big in the rap category during the premiere ceremony, scoring the awards for best rap song and best rap performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” and best rap album for Michael.
An arena security official initially told The Hollywood Reporter that Killer Mike was detained for a reason (unknown at this point) that had nothing to do with Grammy Awards.
“At around 4 p.m., an individual was detained at [Crypto.com Arena] for a physical altercation,” a LAPD spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “The individual is currently being questioned. I cannot confirm the identity of the individual until the person is charged. The investigation is ongoing.”
The rapper was seen in handcuffs being taken into a security room inside the L.A. arena, near the VIP entrance.

Sean “Diddy” Combs will not attend the Grammy Awards this year, a rep for the rapper told The Hollywood Reporter, with Combs sitting out for music’s biggest night as he faces several allegations of sexual abuse.

Combs received a nomination for Best Progressive R&b album for the 2023 project The Love Album: Off The Grid in November, shortly before R&b singer Cassie accused him of sexually assaulting her in a lawsuit filed in New York.

The last time Sean Combs’ music competed at the Grammys, a then-unknown Mark Zuckerberg had just created Facebook, Nipplegate occurred at the Super Bowl and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King garnered a record-tying 11 Oscars. It was 2004, and Combs, aka Diddy, won best rap performance by a group or duo — his third Grammy — for the thumping hit “Shake Ya Tailfeather,” featuring Nelly and Murphy Lee. The track appeared on the Bad Boys II soundtrack, which Diddy executive produced and released on his Bad Boy label.
So his return to the Grammys, two decades later with a nomination for best progressive R&b album for his The Love Album: Off the Grid, is a major feat — and a proud moment for the artist. Some would even call the nomination a win (though we should note that there is zero chance his album can compete with Sza’s...

Los Angeles, Nov 11 (Ians) The list of the 67th Grammy Awards nominees is out and rapper Sza taking the lead with over nine nods. This is followed by Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, and Serban Ghenea with seven, and Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, and, Olivia Rodrigo with six.

Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. is revealing what he thinks Sza‘s chances are of winning Album of the Year for Sos.
Rap and R&b artists are notoriously nominated for the most important categories but rarely win titles like Album of the Year or Song of the Year.
Therefore, even though Sos topped the Billboard 200 chart for 10 weeks, it’s not a given that Sza will win.
Harvey shared his thoughts during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Keep reading to find out more…
“I really will give you an interesting perspective here, but I think [Sza] has a 1/8 chance,” he said, referencing the eight nominees in the category.
The CEO continued, “No, I mean, I think she has a chance because she had an incredible record. The nominees this year all made such great music. It’s really going to come down to the second round of voting...

History has shown that rap and R&b artists will dominate in Grammy nominations but never take home the coveted prize of album of the year.
Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Drake, Kanye West, Mariah Carey and John Legend are some of the acts who have played the role before — big Grammy contender, but top award loser.
This year, that artist is Sza, who scored nine Grammy nominations Friday, including album of the year for the record-breaking, critically acclaimed Sos. But, what are her real chances of winning the award with competition like Jon Batiste and Taylor Swift?
“I really will give you an interesting perspective here, but I think [Sza] has a 1/8 chance,” Grammys CEO Harvey Mason jr. tells The Hollywood Reporter with a laugh (the category has eight nominees).
“No, I mean, I think she has a chance because she had an incredible record,” he continues. “The nominees this year all made such great music.

Sza came out on top in the 2023 Grammy nominations. She received nine bids from the Recording Academy, more than any other artist. She has previously won just one Grammy in her career, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance as a featured artist on Doja Cat‘s hit single “Kiss Me More.” Check out the list of Grammy nominations here.

On Nov. 2, a brand-new Beatles song called "Now and Then" hit streaming services. It features contributions from all four of the band's members, in spite of the fact that John Lennon and George Harrison died decades ago.
Almost as highly publicized as the song's existence itself is the fact that it was made possible thanks to AI, which was able to split John Lennon's original 1977 demo of the song into individual tracks that could then be mixed and mastered. That work, oddly enough, is one of the more straightforward contributions that AI has made to music so far.
Look around the internet for long enough, and you might stumble upon Lana Del Rey singing Phoebe Bridgers's "I Know the End," Kanye West covering Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me," or Drake rapping to Ice Spice's "Munch." You might also find a...

Sheryl Crow has chimed in on the widely discussed topic of artificial intelligence and its impact on the arts.
During her appearance on Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show, the singer-songwriter opened up about writing her upcoming album Evolution, including the title song, which she said is about the new technology.
“My philosophy about it was, Ok, I’m gonna write songs that are meaningful, in the moment, right?” she told host Jimmy Fallon. “So instead of writing an entire book, I’ll just put out sentences…but I wound up with a bunch of songs that I’d written just recently, starting off with ‘Evolution,’ which is a song about AI, speaking about The Beatles, and it’s been so disturbing to me.”
Crow went on to recall a moment when she witnessed AI being used in music creation, and she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

Jimmy Iovine, the co-founder of Interscope Records and Beats by Dr. Dre, is sharing his thoughts on the music industry today and how he now feels “fame has replaced great.”
During an interview with Consequence of Sound, published online Monday, the storied music executive and business mogul was asked about his thoughts on the use of artificial intelligence in songwriting and music production. AI has recently been at the center of debate across several industries, including entertainment.
“I’m not saying it’s good or bad, but I think AI is going to be massive in songwriting on many levels,” he said in response. “One, on a very basic level, if somebody is stuck and you want to experiment and get an idea. Two, is that not everyone, but too many people today are making records for TikTok.”
He continued, “They used to make records for radio, but now it’s TikTok.

The Recording Academy is in a global state of mind.
With the rise of genres like K-pop and Afrobeats and the steady domination of Latin music — from traditional regional Mexican to contemporary Latin trap music — the organization that puts on the Grammy Awards annually has been on a mission to globalize and expand its presence and work around the world.

In a rare joint appearance, the heads of the organizations behind the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and Grammys expressed optimism about strike talk progress and also tackled the task of producing live events.
“The planning continues,” Bill Kramer, CEO of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said when asked about the upcoming Oscars. “We don’t stop planning. We’ve all had to deal with years of pivoting. This is just the latest pivot moment. We’re supportive. We see all sides of this. We want a solution. … There’s just a lot of planning and pivoting right now.”
After a breakthrough Wednesday, WGA negotiators are meeting again with the AMPTP today, and optimism is growing about a potential settlement to the nearly 5-month-long impasse. Award shows have been particularly hard-hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with the Emmys pushed back to January, putting them in the first-quarter corridor with the Grammys and Oscars.

Kamala Harris invited some of rap’s top artists, from Lil Wayne to Slick Rick, to perform on Saturday at her home in Washington, D.C., for what she called “the first-ever hip-hop house party at the Office of the Vice President of the United States.”
Harris celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop from a stage built on her lawn with a guest list of rap luminaries, including Common, Doug E. Fresh, Mc Lyte and Fat Joe.
“Hip-hop is the ultimate American art form,” Harris told the audience. “Hip-hop now shapes nearly every aspect of America’s popular culture, and it reflects the incredible diversity and ingenuity of the American people. It combines rhythms from the continent of Africa, from the Caribbean, from Latin America, with the sounds of soul and gospel and R&b and funk to create something entirely new.”
