In today’s film news roundup, Stx unveils a Vr slate, “A Swingers Weekend” gets acquired and horror film “Blood Quantum” starts shooting.
Vr Slate
Stx Entertainment’s STXsurreal has unveiled an expanded Vr slate, including projects by Kevin Smith, Ed Helms, Dave Bautista and a “Mile 22” spinoff from director Peter Berg.
The slate features original short-form series that will premiere on the Surreal channel, which will launch as an app on Vr headsets in mid-2018. The channel will kick off with “The Limit,” a short-form Vr series from Robert Rodriguez with Michelle Rodriguez starring.
Helms is directing and producing comedy series “New Tricks from The Office,” centering on an aimless 30-year-old Radio Shack employee who receives a visit from a magical elf one day and learns he is destined to become the world’s greatest wizard. Helms will produce the series with Mike Falbo via their Pacific Electric Picture Co.

Back in my video shop days (I have mentioned that before right?) I used to love finding hidden gems. You know, the movies that you never saw a trailer for, never saw them near the cinema they just kind of arrived in your local video shop and you were immediately drawn to them. Some examples off the top of my head could be the likes of Mean Creek, Donnie Darko, Napolean Dynamite, Bubba Ho Tep or any number of others. The thing that always got me into them was the unassuming box cover and that one actor that made you go “Oooooh I like him”.
Entanglement struck me as one of those movies that, while looking hugely unassuming, was going to surprise the crap out of me.

"Every choice we make creates thousands of universes, spreading throughout time and space..." Dark Star Pictures has released the official trailer for an indie "alternative" romantic comedy titled Entanglement, from filmmaker Jason James. The film first premiered at the Seattle Film Festival and stars up-and-coming awkward actor Thomas Middleditch and the talented Jess Weixler (from Teeth). The story follows Middleditch as Ben, a man who accidentally falls in love with a girl who was very nearly, almost his sister while recovering from a suicide attempt. Then things get weird. The full cast includes Diana Bang, Randal Edwards, Marilyn Norry, Eric Keenleyside, and Nicole Laplaca. This looks like one of those ideally quintessential indie films with all the right romantic touches and existential questions, and I want to see it. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jason James' Entanglement, direct from YouTube: While searching for the meaning of his existence,...

'Room' movie with Brie Larson 'Room' movie review: Easy to appreciate, difficult to like The film Room, adapted by Emma Donoghue from her own 2010 novel, has been the talk of Hollywood since well before it was actually made. Its distributor, A24 (fast becoming the Miramax of its generation), acquired rights at Cannes prior to its production. Since its premiere at Telluride, critical praise has been overwhelmingly positive and I appreciate it too. I just didn't like it. Mostly, Room made me really uncomfortable. Which, one supposes, is how we know it's working. Even the contemplation of such a circumstance – a young woman taken unwillingly, held captive, and raped repeatedly for years – is a mind-boggler that requires significant credulity. Except that it happened. Fictional vs. real life abduction To be clear, the story of the girl who was kidnapped by the local neighborhood sociopath that you are probably thinking of right...
