Filmmaker Bruce Baillie was there at the first Aaff — and numerous times since. He’s back this year with a major retrospective of his entire career that spans three separate programs. Baillie, who’ll be in attendance of course, will present a brand-new restored version of his epic pseudo-Western Quick Billy, plus screenings of his classic short movies such as Castro Street, Yellow Horse, Quixote, To Parsifal and more.
There’s also a program dedicated to the films of the late Robert Nelson, including Bleu Shut and Special Warning, as well as sprinklings of underground classics throughout...

Jonathan Schwartz, former CEO of Sun Microsystems, has stepped up to defend Google (in a roundabout way, via Htc) from the patent attacks recently leveled by Apple. If you want to be truly disturbed at how virulent the patent litigation scene is in the tech world, read on.
Sun, which is perhaps best known for its creation of Java, OpenOffice, and its development of the Unix core, apparently suffered a threat of patent litigation directly from Steve Jobs back in 2003. Schwartz explains that in the tech world, patents are used not just as defenses against intellectual property theft, but as offensive weapons that can eliminate competition if leveled correctly.
In 2003, after I unveiled a prototype Linux desktop called Project Looking Glass, Steve [Jobs] called my office to let me know the graphical effects were "stepping all over Apple's IP." (IP = Intellectual Property = patents, trademarks and copyrights.) If we moved forward to commercialize it,...

Twitter's quietly adapting and improving services almost as fast as people are finding new ways to use its social media powers. Today it added hovercard data previews to its Web site...just as Sun's CEO resigned with a Tweet.
The hovercard idea is a relatively minor tweak to the Ui presented to users on visiting Twitter.com, but it nevertheless will speed up and improve the way users interact with the system. Essentially, when you're viewing a timeline of Tweets from anywhere--from a particular user, or within a list or wherever--if you leave your mouse pointer hovering over the avatar or username for a particular Tweet, a little pop-over box will appear: The hovercard.
This give you extra information on the person behind the Tweet, which will be useful if you're curious to know more about the person who's just @messaged you or popped up in a re-Tweet, for example.

Keep reading to find out who’ll be bathed in pig’s blood.
