Rise of Empires: Ottoman is a documentary series written and directed by Emre Sahin.
A very interesting combination of techniques in this dramatized documentary series that brings to life the history in a very Game of Thrones fashion. If you haven’t seen it, give it a peek and see the interesting approach they have taken in creating a story so vivid that it captivates, and the producers’ angle of modernizing everything History-conveying – remember the dry history literature in school? This is the polar opposite, giving the subject some much welcome glamour and allure. We have seen new ways of relaying History lately, making it more appealing, a good example would be the doc-series ‘Blood, sex and Royalty‘. ‘Rise of Empires: Ottoman‘ delivers, with a similarly novel approach, a chronicle historical events.

Our final portrait before we go “mute”, Franco-Turkish filmmaker team Çagla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti made their way from Locarno Film Fest into Tiff’s Contemporary World Cinema section with Sibel – their third feature after the Cannes Acid section selected Noor (2012) and Ningen – which was selected for Tiff back in 2013. Tipped by the fest as a “modern-day Cinderella story of female empowerment” starring Damla Sönmez. Çagla and Guillaume were on hand for the Tiff premiere. Here is our photo of the pairing — but apart.…...

Three years ago, Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s handsomely made yet exoticizing “Mustang” reinforced a Western idea of rural Turkish life and was received with general acclaim away from home, proving that a filmmaker’s local origins don’t exclude an internalized brand of orientalism. That’s even truer with “Sibel,” Çagla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti’s third feature, the first one shot in Zencirci’s country of birth. Weaving together folklore, gender roles and a fitful kind of emancipation in the story of a mute young woman desperate to counter the ostracism of her fellow villagers, the writer-director couple have created an attractive package that doesn’t hold up to close inspection. Even so, thanks to the extensive use of an intriguing whistle language, and given the way it buttresses Western narrative notions of Asia Minor, the film has a good chance of garnering international art-house attention.

Reception can be pretty unreliable atop the mountains of Turkey’s Black Sea Region, so the women picking tea leaves in Çağla Zencirci and Guillaume Giovanetti’s timely allegorical drama Sibel have resorted to another method: they whistle. Not just plain one-note chirps, but elaborate and melodic trills-packed conversations that relay anything from a heads-up to some gossip on the village newlyweds. It’s an original escamotage of guaranteed comedic effect, which the directing duo translate via subtitles. But while the community of women farmers treat it as a mere alternative to verbal chats, for one of them, 25-year-old Sibel (a terrific Damla Sönmez) whistling is the only way she can communicate.
Born mute and raised by single father Emin (Emin Gürsoy) with her younger sister Fatma (Elit İşcan), Sibel walks the remote community as a pariah who, in the kind words of fellow women farmers, brings “bad luck.” Just...

While the Sundance Film Festival is the better known film festival located in Utah that runs in January, it is not the only one, as the Slamdance Film Festival has been running in the same place during the same month for over 20 years. The unique aspect of the Slamdance Film Festival, however, is its Narrative Features and Documentary Features program, which restricts its selection to films that are directorial debuts, made for under $1 million, and don’t have Us distribution. The 2015 incarnation of the festival is set to run from January 23rd to the 29th, and ahead of the festival’s premiere next month, organisers have unveiled the lineup for the aforementioned categories. The lineup is as follows.
Narrative Features Program:
Across The Sea (Turkey/USA), making its North American Premiere
Written and Directed by Nisan Dağ and Esra Saydam
Starring Damla Sönmez, Jacob Fishel, Ahmet Rıfat Şungar, Hakan Karsak,...

Festival top brass announced the 19 films that will screen at the Slamdance Film Festival, set to run in Park City, Utah, from January 23-29.
The 11 narrative and eight documentary selections include 13 world premieres. All competition films are feature directorial debuts budgeted below $1m without Us distribution.
“It’s very exciting to bring this dynamic lineup to audiences in Park City,” said festival director Anna Germanidi. “We are proud to help launch these filmmakers’ careers and celebrate the success we all believe these films deserve.”
“Our success in showcasing emerging artists is most obviously linked with American talent, but increasingly at Slamdance, we want to also support new international talent,” said co-founder and president Peter Baxter.

The Sundance Film Festival dominates Park City in late January, but there is also the upstart Slamdance Film Festival. We’ve not really highlighted that fest or its program, but I always stay at Treasure Mountain Inn where Slamdance is headquartered and they’ve kind of grown on me. Last year they brought Christopher Nolan to speak (the fest had the good sense to program his first film) and Joe Mangianello came to vamp his male stripper docu. This year, there’s every chance of seeing Dennis Rodman, the flamboyant former rebounding machine and Bff of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for the docu Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang In Pyongyang. So let’s all root for an international incident! Here are the films they’ll be playing from January 23-29:
