“There was definitely some heated discussion to put Bailey into this top five guys,” says “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Mary Murphy to Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna about contestant Bailey Munoz. The five-foot-tall b-boy breakout on season 16 of Fox’s reality competition show is one of four hopefuls competing for the title of America’s favorite dancer on the show’s finale that airs at 8 p.m. Et/Pt Sept. 16.
“His size was a consideration,” explains the ballroom specialist who has been part of the show since it began in 2005. In addition, “it’s always scary when we put a b-boy in and will he be able to cope with all the material he is given because they are not trained dancers. They’re not even used to doing choreography.”
However, all concerns melted away once Murphy and fellow judges Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval,...

Gino Cosculluela had arguably the highest expectations from the “So You Think You Can Dance” judges going into the live shows on August 12. Nigel Lythgoe had called the contemporary specialist the best technical dancer in the competition. Cosculluela let them down in the first live show, but he redeemed himself in “Top 10 Perform, Round 2.” Watch his routine above.
He and his partner Stephanie Sosa performed a hip-hop routine for their live debut. Sosa got rave reviews across the board, but the judges criticized Cosculluela for lacking personality. This week he and Sosa were tasked with a jive choreographed by “Dancing with the Stars” pros Emma Slater and Sasha Farber. That fast-paced ballroom style was every bit as demanding as their hip-hop number from a technical standpoint, but perhaps even more demanding from a performative standpoint. Would a technician like Cosculluela be able to get out of his own head and...

“So You Think You Can Dance” season 16 began its live shows on August 12, and this week we learned the results of America’s vote: which eight dancers moved on to the next round, and which unlucky two were eliminated? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The judges especially loved two duets from the season premiere: Bailey Munoz and Mariah Russell‘s jazz number and Madison Jordan and Ezra Sosa‘s contemporary routine. The readers we polled loved those dances too. However, the judges were “uncomfortable” with Eddie Hoyt‘s performance of jazz funk, though they praised his partner Sophie Pittman. And the technically gifted Gino Cosculluela got mixed reviews for his hip-hop dance opposite Stephanie Sosa.

The top six on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” will battle on Monday for the three spots in the final — literally. The semifinalists will go toe-to-toe (heh) in three pairs of Ballroom Battles in addition to their individual dances before a triple elimination. Find out who’s dancing what — and who’s facing off against whom below.
Individual dances
Adam Rippon and Jenna Johnson: contemporary (“O” by Coldplay) — This song selection is no accident. Rippon’s free skate the past two seasons was to a medley that included “O,” choreographed by “So You Think You Can Dance”’s Benji Schwimmer.
Chris Mazdzer and Witney Carson: foxtrot (“I Got Rhythm” by Ray Chew Live)
Jennie Finch Daigle and Keo Motsepe: Viennese waltz (“The Rest of Our Life” by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) — She probably won’t have any issues with this song.
Josh Norman and Sharna Burgess:...

The “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” cast is finally out — and we have thoughts. We’ve got six Olympians on deck — including three figure skaters — two basketball players, a baseball player and your requisite football player. It’s anyone’s game (pun intended) — or is it? Some of these folks have some obvious and not-so-obvious advantages over the others and in a shortened four-week season, that could mean a lot. So before anyone takes their first dance, let’s take a closer look at the cast.

Joey Fatone was eliminated on "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" in the season's second week.
Two former champions, Helio Castroneves and Kelly Monaco, were also in bottom. During this week's "Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars" performance episode, Fatone, a former member of *Nsync, did a '20s-inspired quickstep. The judges said he captured the "magic" of the movies during the Roaring Twenties.
Fatone's elimination came after an hour-long special in which the judges picked their favorite dances from each all-star during their previous seasons. Then, it was revealed that in addition to Fatone and his partner Kym Johnson, Castroneves and his partner Chelsie Hightower were in jeopardy as was Monaco and her partner Val Chmerkosvksiy.
Surprisingly, Bristol Palin, who earned a mere 18 for her performance on Monday night, was safe, thanks to audience votes.

Mary Murphy is blogging for EW.com this season! Catch up with her and her thoughts on the most recent episodes of So You Think You Can Dance.
What an exciting night of dance! Tension ran high on the judging panel and in the audience as to who would make our finale. The pressure is off the judges because America voted for the top six tonight, and for who would be in the finale. We had absolutely no say, so I found it odd today that my Twitter was so abuzz with comments about how “we” could possibly let a certain dancer leave the show!

We're just a week away from the big So You Think You Can Dance performance finale, so things are really getting tense now! Maybe that's why our top six - Witney, Chehon, Tiffany, Cyrus, Eliana and Cole - open the show with a dark, twisted Sonya Tayeh routine set to Kelis's 'Scream'. Either way, it's a brilliant way to begin! We'll be losing two dancers at the end of the show, and the votes have already been cast, but before all that we've got a whole bunch of performances to look forward to. And here to help Nigel and Mary on the judging side, we've got the lovely Christina Applegate again! Let's get this started... Tiffany - dancing with all-star Benji Schwimmer (Jive) Jean-Marc Généreux is here to choreograph Tiffany and Benji's jive, and explains that it's set in a diner - there's a guy (a great (more)...

Like American Idol, every season of So You Think You Can Dance crescendoes to an exhausting and thrilling moment, that week when you realize you're watching superfly talents attempt to sustain superflyness for the eighth or ninth week in a row. It's bracing. It's awesome. But frankly, it's almost a little too grueling in a They Shoot Horses, Don't They? way. (Expect that '69 gem in our Best Movie Ever? section sometime soon.) And here we are, right in the thick of the glorious hell just a week from the finale -- or, as I heard Cat Deeley pronounce it this week, finarwley.
We have six combatants left, six varied levels of eye-popping skill, and another so-so appearance from guest judge Christina Applegate, whose critiques ranged from direct and insightful ("There's a picture in every moment you dance," she said sagely to Eliana) to empty veneration ("Beautiful," she said to.

When Benji Schwimmer was named "America's favorite dancer" in 2006, winning the second season of Fox's long-running "So You Think You Can Dance" reality competition show, he became something of a Mormon superstar. He choreographed pop stars' tours and videos, taught dance classes around the world, started a band (The Weekend Forecast), and even played gay in an indie film called "Leading Ladies" -- all while privately struggling to reconcile his very deep faith with the undeniable realization that he couldn't pray his way out of being gay.
He still has the bright-eyed, fervent zeal of a devoted missionary, but now he's turned those years of study into a challenge for the Mormon church to consider the cost of its extremely slow evolution on gay issues. (It's considered tremendous progress that gay members are welcome -- but only if they remain celibate, abstaining from all same-sex behavior.)...

"So You Think You Can Dance" fans haven't seen Alex Da Silva on the show since season four back in 2008, and there's a reason the choreographer has been off the radar: He has been in jail since being charged with raping a former dance student and assaulting another one. On Friday (January 27), Da Silva was sentenced to 10 years in prison for those crimes, TMZ reports.
While the 43-year-old was accused of raping and sexually assaulting four women, he was convicted in September of only one count of rape and one count of assault with intent to commit rape; the jury was deadlocked on the other charges. He was arrested back in 2009 and charged with multiple felonies. Unable to pay the bail set at $2 million, Da...

Tonight is the season eight premiere of So You Think You Can Dance. And if you believe the commercials, the talent is better than ever before. Given the quality of dancers last season and the prior years, we do find that a little hard to believe. But knowing what a great vehicle the show is to expose these otherwise unknowns to millions of fans, it only makes sense that the b-boys, tappers, krumpers and ballerinas are crawling out of the woodwork to get on the show. So while we wait to see how this year's dancers measure up, here's a list of our favorite Sytycd routines to date.

Leading Ladies is a quirky but charming comedy with a classical sensibility. Co-directed by Daniel Beahm and Erika Randall Beahm, the film is about two sisters and their overbearing stage mother, once a champion dancer. The light, playful nature of the film is evident from the opening credits. Great care was taken in staging, choreographing and staging the entire film to work whimsically with the musical score.
Shannon Lea Smith plays Tasi Campari, the younger sister and something of a wild princess. Tasi is also the dancer of the two sisters, her mother.s protégé. "So You Think You Can Dance" executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe made a stunning announcement on Monday (March 29), outlining the major changes coming to the dance series this season: Not only will there be just 10 finalists chosen in Vegas, but those finalists will be partnered with a new "Sytycd" alum each week of the competition.
Lythgoe promised to reveal which of the show's "all-stars" have signed on to return via Twitter and he wasn't lying.
"I am thrilled that representing the various dance genres of Popping, Locking, Krump etc in the All-Stars Dance-Pool from Season 4 is Twitch," Lythgoe tweeted Tuesday morning.
No surprise there, considering Stephen "tWitch" Boss -- who is starring in the upcoming "Step Up 3D" and "Stomp the Yard 2" films -- was easily one of the most likable and talented contestants ever to grace the "So You Think You Can Dance" stage and was clearly...

Usually, by this point in the season of "So You Think You Can Dance," there are at least two very clear favorites and then a few dark-horse dancers waiting in the wings. As far as I can remember, past winners Nick Lazzarini, Joshua Allen, Benji Schwimmer and Sabra Johnson won our hearts immediately with their surprisingly wide range of talent and adorable personalities. But when the top 10 performed this week, I was still absolutely stumped about who will win the title of "America's Favorite Dancer."
On the other hand, I can't be the only one who knew Hawaiian heartthrob Kupono Aweau and perky cutie Randi Evans were not long for this competition. Kupono's looks aside, he just doesn't match up in physical strength (witness the way he struggled through his lifts in this week's paso doble), and as Nigel Lythgoe said a few weeks ago, he...

Full disclosure: I'm a rabid So You Think You Can Dance fan. Every summer for the past four years the talent on display on this show simply blows every other reality competition out of the water. So much so, that one can even overlook the nagging, hetero-cheerleading presence of producer Nigel Lythgoe on the judging panel.
Nigel's peculiar obsession with the masculinity of male dancers aside, Sytycd raises your standards when it comes to dance. I mean, once you start watching this show it is awfully hard to sit through an episode of Dancing with the Stars.
Sytycd is now in its fifth season, and every year we wonder if they can assemble dancers talented enough to stack up against previous season standouts such as Travis Wall, Danny Tidwell, Neil Haskell, and a host of others.
Well, last week the show announced its finalists for the new season, and the...

The search for America’s favorite dancer is back! “So You Think You Can Dance” kicked off its fifth season last week, and last night, we got the chance to see the Miami and Memphis auditions, where thousands of pointy-toed contemporary dancers and bright-eyed poppers and lockers showed up for the chance to dance their way into America’s heart and to go on to a life of fame and fortune … or not.
Wait — where are all the former “Sytycd” contestants? As Kris Allen basks in the glory of his “American Idol” win, we couldn’t help but wonder what life after “Sytycd” looks like.
Since focusing on the competition’s winners would be a tad depressing (where is Sabra Johnson?), we decided to look back at what the show’s most successful, or at least most visible, graduates are doing now — and where you can find them next:
Blake McGrath,...

Video footage showing Demi Lovato's live appearance in "Dancing with the Stars" has arrived. During the result show of the popular reality dancing competition on April 7, the Disney star sang "La La Land" as Benji Schwimmer and Torri Smith took the dance floor.
Another musical guest at the ABC's TV show was multiple Grammy Awards-winner singer Etta James. She delivered her 1941 song called "At Last", the same tune performed by Beyonce Knowles during Barack Obama's inaugural night. During her performance, Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy teamed up on the dance floor.
On the night, comedian David Alan Grier and his professional partner Kym Johnson were eliminated from the dancing contest. After the announcement, they took the stage for a farewell dance with Michelle Branch's song "Goodbye to You" being played.

Going home fifth in "Dancing with the Stars" are David Alan Grier and his partner Kym Johnson. The "In Living Color" actor received the lowest total combination of judges' score in the dance off and the audience vote.
The result night was begun with an encore of Lil' Kim and Derek Hough's Viennese Waltz and the scores from last night. Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke stood tall with 29 while Steve-o and Lacey Schwimmer were in the bottom with 18. Two couples that went through first were Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas as well as Lil' Kim and Derek Hough.
It was intercepted by a performance of Etta James' "At Last" that serenaded Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy's dance. It was then the next two safe couples announcement. Through for another dance week were Gilles and Cheryl well as Steve-o and Lacey. Five more to go, Chuck Wicks and...
