Beth (Alexis Bledel) is torn. Tommy (Scott Porter) is the perfect New York boyfriend; he knows how to impress Beth's friends, he's a Wall Street hotshot, and he knows all the right romantic places in New York for unforgettable nights. On the other hand, Daniel (Bryan Greenberg) is a boy scout; a confused nice guy with no self confidence at work or at the bars. In our introduction to him, he brings a senior banker his coffee and change of 63 cents. The senior looks at him like he's an idiot, takes the change and dumps them in the trash. Daniel looks flustered—gosh, the big city elites can literally throw money away!
Does Beth want to be with the man who makes her big dreams come true, or the man who listens to her and likes the same books she reads? I'm a guy, so maybe I just don't know...

The Good Guy is one of those little movies that too often gets lost in the shuffle. Multiplexes are dominated by Hollywood tentpoles and sequels these days. Even the smallest theaters in malls, the ones originally intended to showcase art house films or indie pictures, now simply serve as overflow spaces for the big guns. That's a shame, and the result of it is that people must find modest productions like The Good Guy on DVD and Blu-ray, on pay-per-view, or eventually cable. To be honest, The Good Guy isn't an overlooked treasure. It's not an epic that loses anything by not seeing on a large screen. It's just a nice movie with an appealing cast -- Scott Porter, Alexis Bledel, Bryan Greenberg, Aaron Yoo, Anna Chlumsky, Kate Nauta, and Andrew McCarthy -- that deserved a better fate. Beth lives in New York City and she has Big Apple-sized aspirations of landing a good job,...

Hey everyone! Hope everyone's week is going well! Lots of good stuff coming out this week. For the record I guess Weeds does not come out until August. I posted last week that it started that week but I was Wrong and now I am sad. Ahh well at least True Blood started! Now to the movies this week.
She's Out of My League
When he starts dating drop-dead gorgeous Molly (Alice Eve), insecure airport security agent Kirk (Jay Baruchel) can't believe it. As his friends and family share their doubts about the relationship lasting, Kirk does everything he can to avoid losing Molly forever. Kyrsten Ritter, Lindsay Sloane, Jasika Nicole and Andrew Daly also star in this charming romantic comedy about unlikely lovers.
Starring: Jay Baruchel, Alice Eve
Director: Jim Field Smith
I really liked this movie! It was so funny and oddly more realistic then I thought it would be for some reason.

The Good Guy
Directed by: Julio Dipietro
Cast: Alexis Bledel, Scott Porter, Bryan Greenberg
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: March 5, 2010
Plot: New York archaeologist sweetheart Beth has been going out with stock broker Tommy for a couple of months. Once she meets Tommy’s more sensitive friend Danny, she has to decide who is better for her.
Who’S It For?: Less for men than it is women, this modern romance is for ladies much like Bledel’s character – those who dream about a guy who reads “Pride and Prejudice” while maintaining the build of a GQ model.
Expectations: Didn’t know too much going in. This was going to be a romantic comedy, most likely, but at what quirky cost?

New York City becomes a character all its own in The Good Guy (2010), much like Sex and the City (2003) and the 1987 film Wall Street. Carrie Bradshaw came to New York City to find love, while Gordon Gekko came to find endless supplies of wealth. In the new film The Good Guy (2010), both worlds are colliding to bring a fresh, young look at life for young adults. First time director and writer Julio DePietro had an inside look at the world of greed working 10+ years in an investment firm. When shares of Bear Stearns fell 47 percent on March 14 2008, Scott Porter was on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Instead of widespread panic, an eerie quiet descended as shell-shocked traders struggled to fully comprehend the implication of their losses. Porter, perhaps best known as Jason Street from NBC’s Friday Night Lights, had been granted privileged access to the heart of the action on Wall Street in order to prepare for the role of an ambitious hedge fund hot-shot in The Good Guy.

One new release wandered into theaters this weekend, and with nothing but leftover Valentine's Day chocolates and ten week old alien misadventures, it was an easy run for number one. Apparently now that Scorsese finally has his Oscar (courtesy of his last feature film, the 2006 drama The Departed) he's ready to set aside heavy dramas and move into special effects laden dramatic mystery thrillers. And the choice paid off. His latest offering, Shutter Island scared up over $40 million this weekend, the highest box office opening for any Scorsese flick. Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan's latest thriller The Ghost Write saw a warm welcome in small release, banking $179,000 in just four theaters. Former Gilmore girl Alexis Bledel didn't fare so well. We watched his character fall from grace on Friday Night Lights (TV) when he was paralyzed after a drive gone wrong. Scott Porter did not play the typical jock football player; his roles had more anguish, demanded more compassion, and was far more complex. Viewers ate up his storylines and were happy to see his arc come to a justified close after seasons of heartache. Leaving the football field and embracing the big screen, Scott went on to nab role in Bandslam (2009) and Dear John (2010), the film that will always be remembered as the one that knocked Avatar (2009) out of the number one box office spot after seven weeks. There is one role that you have not seen yet from Scott, and he hopes it happens soon. Before moving to Hollywood, Scott took up residence in New York City while he performed on the off-Broadway hit Altar Boyz. The trained...

For the most part, Wall Street has been glorified as the destination for the elite, a place where multi-million dollar deals and lunches at Masa happen before the closing bells chime. In the new film, by first time director Julio DePietro and former investment banker, The Good Guy takes a raw and honest look at life on Wall Street for young twenty-something Manhattanites. The Good Guy examines the relationships of Beth (Alexis Bledel), her boyfriend Tommy (Scott Porter), and their new friend Daniel (Bryan Greenberg). The film goes beyond being about a torrid love triangle; it observes the life of a young adult working and living in Manhattan. Like any relationship, these characters are dealt endearingly beautiful moments that are soon forgotten by betrayal and dishonesty. Trapped in a NYC blizzard, PopStar spoke with Bryan Greenberg over the phone about his role as Daniel, the newbie to the Wall Street world.

Extremely loosely based on the novel “The Good Soldier” (which is referenced throughout the film, a nifty device thanks to various characters involvement in a book club), Julio Dipietro’s feature film debut The Good Guy doesn’t break any new ground, but it’s certainly interesting to watch unfold. At ninety minutes, the film is economical and Dipietro handily keeps his audience’s attention with well-crafted, non-gimmicky twists.

Though you might remember Anna Chlumsky as the perky child star of "My Girl" and "Gold Diggers," you can stop pretending that the 29-year-old actress is still a kid. After some years off from acting, during which she pursued a different career altogether, Chlumsky resurfaced on both the small screen (with appearances on "30 Rock" and last year's "Cupid") and the big one (the Oscar-nominated "In the Loop"). Next up for her is writer-director Julio DePietro's romantic dramedy "The Good Guy," starring Alexis Bledel as an urban conservationist in Manhattan who is torn between two Wall Street traders (Scott Porter and Bryan Greenberg), one of whom works for the other. In a brief but memorable supporting role, Chlumsky plays one of Bledel's upwardly mobile friends who has just been burned in the New York dating game. In support of the film, Chlumsky called me to discuss dating, bars, what brought her back into acting,...

Whatever suspense Julio DePietro's "The Good Guy" seems to think it's generating is predicated upon the supposedly surprising twist that its central Wall Street wannabe tycoon is not, in fact, a standup guy. T Scott Porter, Alexis Bledel The Good Guy, writer/director Julio DePietro's debut film, premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. As the movie will make its way into theaters this weekend, we caught up with DePietro and asked him to introduce his exploration of love and fidelity among the Wall Street crowd. Julio DePietro The Good Guy (starring Alexis Bledel, Scott Porter, Bryan Greenberg, and Andrew McCarthy) is ultimately a love story, but it is not a traditional Hollywood-style romantic comedy. The 'R' rating should be some proof of that, but trust me, I had no interest in adding to the pile of bland, predictable movies that could only be conceived by a computer program somewhere in Los Angeles ("it" girl + [shirtless] leading man + wildly contrived premise = sexy, profitable hilarity). Apart from the love story at the core of the film, one of the primary goals of The Good Guy...

Fans of Ewan McGregor, Kristen Stewart and James Van Der Beek (!) will be seeing double this spring, as arthouses and multiplexes host an array of indie films ranging from the travails of septuagenarian New Yorkers looking for love ("The Last New Yorker") to 13-year-old assassins on the hunt for their first kill ("Kick-Ass"). If real life is more your speed, there are new documentaries about reviving animation strips (the Disney doc "Waking Sleeping Beauty") and stripping down (the burlesque history "Behind the Burly Q"), while foreign wonders like the French crime epics "A Prophet" and "Mesrine" mix with Korean treasures "Mother" and "The Good, The Bad and The Weird."

This Tuesday night a friend and I went to see a press screening of The Good Guy, a sort-of romantic sort-of comedy written and directed by Julio dePietro, coming out in theatres February 19. Starring Alexis Bledel, Scott Porter and Bryan Greenberg, it's the none-too-original story of Beth, a twenty-something girl in Manhattan trying to figure out who to date, with an adorably bro-y She's All That-style subplot about clueless dudes teaching a more clueless dude how to succeed with women and on Wall Street. (Very) loosely based on the 1915 novel The Good Soldier, most aptly by way of the satisfying if not particularly shocking turning point in which the unreliability of the narrator is revealed, the film doesn't waste much time developing any of the characters or their relationships: each is given a fairly convenient and two-dimensional backstory (Daniel, the soft-spoken new hire at Tommy's Wall Street firm, spent...

"The Good Guy" is a young man's "Wall Street." Though no-one in the youthful cast can yet match Michael Douglas's portrayal of Greed Personified, the light, fast-moving comedy with its bright young faces slips by as effortlessly as a couple of dollars on an August day in a Haagen Dazs emporium. As a romance it follows the convention of a couple which at first is unsure of each others intentions but gets the right people together while giving the cad his comeuppance just in time to complete the frothy ninety minutes of celluloid.

The modest in size Roadside Attractions can certainly relate to the big ambitions and dreams of the narrative in their second title pick-up for their eventual 2010 slate, setting the Tribeca played Julio DePietro romantic dramedy for a March release, right after the January release of the Berlin Film Festival pick-up Happy Tears. Perhaps a good companion piece to the eventual release of Stone's Wall Street 2, The Good Guy sees actor Scott Porter play Tommy, a rising Wall Street star in a budding romance with a new girlfriend, Beth (Alexis Bledel). He begins mentoring a seemingly hapless new salesman (Bryan Greenberg) who befriends Beth, starting a chain of events that might ultimately lead to his downfall. ...

Described as a romantic dramedy, "Guy" centers on Bledel's character, a Manhattan urban conservationist who falls for a Wall Street operator (Porter).

"Guy" was produced by Linda Moran and Rene Bastian of Belladonna Prods. as well as DePietro. Mandate International is handling foreign sales.

Translating great works of literature to the screen is a daunting task; filmmakers open themselves up to comparison, and do not usually measure up to readers' standards. (Notable exceptions: The Remains of the Day, To Kill a Mockingbird, and a few others come to mind.) In the case of Disgrace, however, the elegant and chilling film opening this week is a testament to the care and respect paid to the novel by producer Julio DePietro, director Steve Jacobs, writer Anna Maria Monticelli, and stars John Malkovich and Jessica Haines. J.M. Coetzee's novel Disgrace caused quite a stir upon its publication in 1999. On the surface, the story is of a snobbish Cape Town literature professor who falls from grace after an affair with a student, visits his daughter on her farm in the country, and suffers as the victim of a horrible crime. Readers who dug a little deeper, however,...
