I like to give creative license to the actors. If I've written the characters and stories correctly, then I've already pre-directed them; I can only hope that they see what I see. And I give them the opportunity to show me before I say anything. The first takes are their versions. If something's off then I just guide them to another version that's closer to what I think is better. The beauty of filmmaking is the collaboration between creative people. I trust their ideas and they trust my guidance.
