When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020), “Dune” (2022) and last year’s champ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. A slew of winners — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by...

Oscar Race Kicks Off as First Screeners Drop: ‘Air,’ ‘Creed III,’ ‘John Wick 4’ and More (Exclusive)
The Academy Screening Room is now open to all eligible AMPAS members, with the first wave of films uploaded for Oscar consideration for the upcoming awards season.
Nine notable titles are among the films, including Ben Affleck’s “Air” from Amazon Studios, Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III” from MGM, Kelly Fremon Craig’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” and Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 4,” both from Lionsgate.
The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. In 2022, nine movies were among the first added to the members’ portal while in 2020, eight films kicked off that season. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration. Obviously, more films will be added, and in greater batches, over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision makers on when a movie is placed on the Academy Screening Room for viewing.

Michael B. Jordan‘s first foray into directing with “Creed III” has done quite well at the box office, and been generally enjoyed by critics and fans alike. Maybe it’s too early to consider its awards potential, but maybe not, because there seems to be more room for movies like “Creed III” now than when Jordan first played the title role in Ryan Coogler‘s “Creed” back in 2015.
What’s particularly interesting about that initial release is that it did get Sylvester Stallone nominated for his third Oscar, nearly 40 years after his first two Oscar noms for writing and starring in the original “Rocky” (1976). That iconic boxing drama led to a full-on franchise that was more about box office than awards, but “Creed” came at a time when people started taking Coogler more and more seriously following his acclaimed debut feature “Fruitvale Station.”

Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” is finally out in theaters, and reviews have been pretty great. A lot of credit for that must go to the creative artisans who helped Reeves attain his vision for the Dark Knight. To say that the crafts of Reeves’s collaborators are fully on display in this movie would be an understatement, especially when you consider that multiple craftspeople involved with the movie are currently up for Oscars later this month.
“The Batman” was one of the many productions that famously got shut down due to Covid after it began filming in January 2020. It had to turn off cameras for six months until pandemic protocols were in place, but you’re not likely to be able to tell from watching it.

Watertower Music has announced the release of “The Batman”, the compelling new theme from director Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson in the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne.
The theme was created by Academy-, Emmy- and Grammy Award winning composer Michael Giacchino and is the first music to be made available from Giacchino’s upcoming The Batman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).
Here’s what Matt Reeves said over on Twitter about Giacchino’s score. The filmmaker and composer previously worked on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, released on July 11, 2014 and the third film, War for the Planet of the Apes, released on July 14, 2017

Exclusive: Iconic Talent Agency, which specializes in repping craft talent in film and TV, has taken the wraps off Iconic Editorial, a new subsidiary that will provide the company’s roster of editors access to commercial and branded entertainment projects.
The idea came from Ita founder and ex-wme partner Devin Mann amid the current coronvirus pandemic, which saw commercial opportunities grow via remote workflows, and his clients — including Oscar winner Tom Cross, Oscar nominee Joe Walker and Jinmo Yang (Parasite) — eager for work in the space within their own confines.
“Our Iconic Editorial editors are a huge asset to advertising agencies because our editors are trained in narrative and have decades of experience producing genre-bending projects that accentuate exceptional storytelling,” said Heinrich Meyer, who will serve as Iconic Editorial’s managing director. “By bringing in these world-class artists, ad...

DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes wrapped up with a 30-minute discussion with director Matt Reeves about The Batman, and it did not disappoint. Introduced by Robert Pattinson and moderated by DC FanDome host Aisha Tyler, the fast-talking Reeves covered quite a bit over the course of the panel, including giving fans a pretty clear idea of what sort of story they’re in for when The Batman debuts in October of next year.

As had been discussed before, The Batman is set during Bruce Wayne’s second year as a crimefighter, meaning it’s not an origin, but the Dark Knight is clearly still establishing himself and becoming the hero he’ll eventually become. As Reeves made clear, “He’s far from perfect.” While Batman is no longer a new presence in Gotham City when The Batman starts, he’s not having the affect on the...

The first trailer for The Batman has arrived and it does not disappoint! With Matt Reeves in the director's chair, I had no doubt we were getting something special, but I'm totally on board for this seemingly Batman: Zero Year-inspired take. The trailer gives us a good look at Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, as well as Jeffrey Wright as Jame Gordin, while giving us a glimpse of Paul Dano as The Riddler and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman. Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think:

A triumph for diversity in casting, The Peanut Butter Falcon is an enormously endearing and often funny drama about two outlaws: Zac (Zack Gottsagen), a 22-year-old with down syndrome, and Tyler (Shia Labeouf), a small-time crab fisher who sets his competition’s traps ablaze. Without family, Zac escapes from a nursing home thanks to his roommate (played by the always delightful Bruce Dern) and the head nurse Eleanor (Dakota Johnson) is given her marching orders to go find him. After reviewing the evidence in his room, she deduces he’s heading to a wrestling camp in Aiken, Sc headed by the Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Hayden Church).
While breaking only minor new ground in the unlikely duo/outlaw chase picture, the film is a triumph for actor Gottsagen, in a role written specifically for him by first-time feature filmmakers Tyler Nelson and Michael Schwartz. Zac finds himself stuck in a...

In an industry that has long relied on apprenticeship programs to pass down skills from one generation to the next, the breakdown of the old studio system — along with the growing itinerant nature of below-the-line employment — have posed new challenges to the transfer of knowledge to younger artisans. In response, unions and guilds have devised new ways to pass the baton.
Steven Poster, national president of the Intl. Cinematographers Guild (Iatse Local 600), explains that in earlier times, film crews worked together for years. Film schools weren’t as prevalent as they are today, and newer union members learned skills through on-the-job training directly from those with more experience.
To replace that tradition, at a time when camera crews tend to fluctuate more, the union has set up the Local 600 Mentorship Program, a pilot effort designed to help existing members learn from an experienced Dp — but away from the set. The...

MTV's second season of "Taking the Stage" premieres tonight and it has definitely had a makeover.
Season one fans will recognize dancer/playboy Tyler Nelson and singer/drama queen Mia Carruthers, who isn't a regular, but will have a recurring role.
What you won't recognize are the gaggle of new incoming freshmen. Also other than tonight's hour-long premiere episode, the show is also only a half hour this season as opposed to last season's full hour of weekly guilty pleasure. New episodes air an hour later than last season, as well, after "America's Best Dance Crew," so it remains to be seen if its audience will stick around for new episodes in their later time slot.
