ABC's reality competition 'Skating with the Stars' has selected the season's winners: Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak champs The pair took the win on Tuesday night's live finale broadcast on ABC. Based on the combination of the Skating with the Stars judges' scores they received during Tuesday night's show and the votes home viewers cast following Monday night's show, the couple edged out reality TV star Bethenny Frankel and her partner Ethan Burgess "It's just one of those things where you take on something. I did take on too much, but when you do that, you push harder and go through it, and you will get what you want. You will get there in the end. And it...

All My Children’s Rebecca Budig and her partner Fred Palascak won the inaugural season of Skating With the Stars, edging out Bethenny Frankel of the Real Housewives of New York and her partner Ethan Burgess. Who was the best ice queen of them all? It turned out to be All My Children actress Rebecca Budig, who outskated Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel on Tuesday night to be crowned the winner of ABC's inaugural Skating with the Stars season. Budig, the front-runner all season long - she notched the season's only perfect score of 60 - was stunned to be named the winner, and credited her partner, the skating pro Fred Palascak. "I'm just shocked. I owe all of this to Fred, who is an unbelievable teacher," she said. Meanwhile, Frankel, 40, who skated with Ethan Burgess,...

In case anyone cares: ABC's only first season of Skating with the Stars came to a close last night. And the winner is ... All My Children actress/Bachelor Bob Guiney ex Rebecca Budig, who outwitted, outlasted, outplayed outskated fellow finalist and Real Housewife of New York Bethenny Frankel. (Cue the confetti cannons!)
No shocker here considering Budig, who skated with pro-skater Palascak, dominated throughout the five-week competition and received a perfect score for her last routine. According to People, runner-up Frankel, who glided alongside pro partner Ethan Burgess, even said, "[Rebecca] should be a real skater."...

Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak have been crowned the first ever champions of ABC's Skating With The Stars. The pair beat runners-up Bethenny Frankel and Ethan Burgess by receiving the highest combined score of judges' and viewers' votes. "I owe all of this to Fred, who is an unbelievable teacher. I've said it a hundred times, but honestly, I owe it all to him," Rebecca said after her win. "This is such a shock! I can't believe it." Tonight's finale included performances from each of the previously eliminated contestants as well as one last performance from both finalists as they attempted to impress the judges. Here's what the judges said about the contestants' final performances:

Something surprising finally happened on "Skating With the Stars" -- and it wasn't just the fact that this apparently isn't the last episode.
That's right. The "Swts" finale is a two-nighter, and one of the competition's early favorites won't be in attendance "Who?" you ask. Well, you can plainly see in the headline, but let's just run through the penultimate routines in the spirit of protocol.
The Group Dance:
Somehow amateurish figure skating is infinitely more digestible when it's set to Christmas music, but isn't everything? The three finalists spinning in circles to "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was sweet -- but it didn't rock the score boat. Rebecca distinguished herself from runner-up Jonny Moseley, who was just marginally better than Bethenny Frankel.
Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak (66 out of 70)
Though we'd object that it was a tad too schmaltzy, Budig's free-skate was an appropriate culmination of her incredible 10-week progress.

Bethenny Frankel has said that she loved her performance on Monday night's Skating With The Stars. The Bethenny Getting Married? star took to the ice alongside partner Ethan Burgess for 'Thrill Week', which required the celebrities to perform two risky moves. She earned 38 out of a possible 60 points for her combined artistic impression and technical merit scores. Writing on her Twitter account after the performance, she said: "You guys are the best!!!I Loved our performance and had the best time.I gave it my All.I (more)...

The tension and awkwardness is mounting over at "Skating With the Stars," with last week's absentee competitor officially succumbing to illness and a beloved underdog really butting heads with the apparently irritable Johnny Weir.
But that's what you wanted, isn't it, America -- some drama chilled to 32 degrees Fahrenheit?*
We barely even know how to write about this show anymore, it's gone so far off the tracks, but we're obviously still willing to try. So let's just plow through this sucker, chronological-like:
The Brandon Mychal Smith situation
After bailing on last week's episode with some undiagnosed illness that resulted in pixelated vomit, Smith was a no-go for a second week in a row, gracefully bowing out of the competition. He must feel awful, though, because he couldn't even stand up during the announcement -- not to mention the fact that "Swts" is certainly a better platform for him than the...

Welcome back to Skating With the Stars, the low-rent-verging-on-homeless version of Dancing With the Stars! ‘Tis the season for not being able to get the cave-troll growl of British host Vernon Kay’s “liiiiive.” (compared to Tom Bergeron’s hearty “Liiiiiiiive!”) out of your rotting brain, no matter how hard you bang your head against the ice! What’s the use? What is the point of anything? I have no words. Here are some screengrabs.

Week 2 taught us that celebrity carnage didn't bring us the happiness we expected, but Week 3 reveals that it certainly makes for compelling TV.
We're already at the halfway mark on "Skating With the Stars," and it's clearly taking its toll on the cast.
Brandon Mychal Smith left rehearsals in an ambulance earlier on show day, right around the time Jonny Moseley's partner Brooke Castile took a skate to the hand, slicing her finger to the bone.
ABC made us sweat out the episode to see if Smith would make it back in time to perform (he didn't), while Castile, in a show of super trooper-dom, skated with her hand in a brace.
So what do we with our stars in stitches and slings? Make 'em jump! The Week 3 challenge requires a leap from the ice and a one-foot landing. Let's see who was up to the task.

We'd been waiting and waiting for the carnage to begin on "Skating With the Stars," and when it finally did... it left us feeling empty inside.
Other people's misfortunes normally give us such pleasure, but there was no laughing at Sean Young or Vince Neil when they came crashing down on their famous behinds in this second round of "Swts."
So what did we learn this week aside from the fact that we just might have a soul? Well, for one, this show is markedly more entertaining now that they've ripped off the broadcast band-aid. Once it became clear that collective skepticism couldn't cause the studio to burst into flames, everyone seemed a lot more comfortable the second time around -- including Mr. Dick Button, whose mixed metaphors make us wish we could adopt him from the grandpa orphanage.

I discovered one thing while watching ABC's Skating with the Stars last night. The sound I kept hearing was not metal scraping ice, it was reality TV scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Actually, that may be a bit unfair. Skating is really no worse than the show that preceded it, but this whole " ______ with the Stars" genre needs to be nipped in the bud.
At the very least, they need to look outside these boring challenges, and offer up something unexpected. For instance, Red Light/Green Light with the Stars, or Chainsaw Juggling with the Stars.
As for Skating, it was pretty much what it was expected to be, a low-rent copy of Dancing with the Stars, with one notable exception.
The fabulous judge Johnny Weir.

Skating With the Stars debuted last night, and although British host Vernon Kay (no Tom Bergeron) did his best to repeatedly assure us that this was the most dangerous live competition on TV — “The performances will be just as explosive, the costumes even tinier, but there is an added element of danger — razor-sharp blades of steel strapped to the feet of six very nervous stars!” — no one even fell during their debut performances. At least we got some serious spills in the training montages. (Vince Neil fell more than all the other contestants combined, we were told.) After all, Kay promised,...

Much like that Daniel Day-Lewis movie about oil prospecting and milkshakes, it looks like we're going to have to wait a bit for the blood we've been promised.
Sure, ABC may not be plugging "Skating With the Stars" as a dystopian battle to the death were celebrities are forced to dance on knives over unforgiving ice... but that's sort of why you're tuning in, right?
Yes, it's our morbid curiosity about what might go wrong that draws us to "Swts." Though, after the premiere, it looks as though we'll also have some rather exciting performances to look forward to -- while we wait for carnage.
So what do we have to say of this first taste of skating? Let's break it down couple by semi-recognizable couple:
Brandon Mychal Smith and Keauna McLaughlin (36, out of 60)
What do they put in the water over at the Disney Channel? Their lesser known male...

Bethenny Frankel didn't score very well in her debut performance on 'Skating With the Stars' (Mon., 9Pm Et on ABC), but she sure looked the part of a figure skater. After partner Ethan Burgess managed several creative spins and lifts with Frankel (to the appropriate tune of 'You Spin Me Right Round'), the judges gave their commentary.
Olympian/judge Johnny Weir said, "Your body is sick. I cannot believe you just had a baby." (Daughter Bryn was born in early May.) But he advised her to put more spirit into it: "You need to be in it, or stay on the side -- you have to really give it your all."

We loved Skating with the Stars the first time around, whenit was on Fox and went by Skating with Celebrities. That short-lived showfeatured famous faces like Dave Coulier from Full House and mall-tour-pop-sensationDebbie Gibson, paired with former Olympians like Nancy Kerrigan and Kurt Browning. Sadly the series was canceled after just one season.
But the producers of Dancing with the Stars have finally caught on—probablyfueled by the success of the British version of the show Dancing on Ice and thepopularity of Dwts figure skating contestants like Kristi Yamaguchi and Evan Lysacek. We don’t care why it’s going to be on. We’re just ecstaticthat it’s back.
Now all that said, we were a little disappointed with thecelebrity lineup. First of all there are only six contestants vs. Dwts’ usual robustroster of 12 competitors.

"Skating With the Stars" premieres on Nov. 22, and though ABC is keeping mum about the judges' panel, they've revealed 8 key players in the upcoming freshman season.
Team USA's all-time winningest ice dancer, Tanith Belbin, brings her expertise as color commentator, and British TV personality Vernon Kay will host. (For those not familiar with Kay, he's basically the male version of Cat Deeley).
As for the six professional skaters who've already been training with their celebrity partners, here they are:
Ethan Burgess and Bethenny Frankel: Burgess took bronze and pewter medals at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships 2004 and 2005 in pairs before playing Jon Heder's stunt double in "Blades of Glory."
Brooke Castile and Jonny Moseley: Castile took home the U.S. pairs title in 2007.

Okay, it’s easy to look at the roster of “pros” on ABC’s Skating With the Stars and dismiss them. But ask yourself this: How many of the pros’ names did you recognize on Dancing With the Stars that first season?
