Verve has promoted Melissa Darman to partner.
Darman, who joined Verve in 2014, started her career at ICM before pivoting to the studio system to work in comedy development at ABC Network. She then moved onto Lionsgate before joining Verve, where she has continued to focus on comedy during her time as an agent on the TV literary team.
“Working at Verve continues to be rewarding on a daily basis,” Darman said in a statement. “I could not be more proud to be a part of such a forward-thinking company that cares equally about the well-being and success of both its employees and clients. When Simon Kinberg’s starry “The 355” was first announced in 2018, the ensemble spy film was touted for its gender-conscious casting, tapping five big-name female stars to star in a globe-trotting adventure that would normally be the bailiwick of a bunch of dudes. But even then, the idea that women (women!) could lead an original actioner was hardly the revolutionary idea that was literally sold (for millions of dollars) to a raft of interested parties as part of a natty Cannes launch. And that’s just fine; in fact, that “The 355” arrives in theaters after a number of other, similarly themed projects have already beaten it to the punch might just be the most revolutionary idea of all.

Up and coming screenwriter Bek Smith is set to write the screenplay adaptation for Mark Millar’s “Reborn” comic book set up at Netflix, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Chris McKay is attached to direct the project.
Netflix acquired Millar’s company, Millarworld in 2017 and since then has been developing projects with Mark Millar and Lucy Millar. Millarworld is the comic book publishing company founded by Mark Millar and is a creator-owned line that holds the rights to the U.K. writer’s 18 yet-to-be-optioned properties such as “Jupiter’s Legacy” and “Mph” — as well as any stories and characters that Millarworld will create in the future.

“Into the Spider-Verse” star Shameik Moore shared a few thoughts about what he would like to see in the upcoming sequel to Sony’s animated Spider-Man film, namely that he wants it be a little less animated.
“Since we’ve established the Spider-Verse, I think it would be cool for us to go from animation to live action and back. I don’t know if that’s going to happen, but that’s would I would like,” Moore told reporters Friday during the Television Critics Association session for Hulu’s scripted series on the Wu-Tang Clan, which Moore is set to star.
Sony is planning a “Spider-Verse” sequel that will continue Miles Morales’ story. Joaquim Dos Santos, whose recent credits include Netflix’s “Voltron” series, has been tapped to direct the sequel. “They’re working on something,” Moore said, adding that he probably wasn’t allowed to say anything more.

Forty years ago the big holiday hit was Superman, Hollywood’s very first superhero blockbuster. Warner Bros marketed the movie by promising the sky to moviegoers: “You’ll believe a man can fly.”
Now, four decades later, that promise should be rewritten to reflect a new era of superhero blockbusters: “You better believe a woman can fly, too.”
Deadline broke the news this week that Sony is ramping up a Spider-Women film that will feature three female iterations of Marvel’s wall-crawling Spider-Man and a script by Bek Smith. The project joins a growing wave of female superhero projects in the works that will test the conventional assumption that the mask-and-cape genre is a “boys only” sector.
Skeptics would point to the all-female revamp of Ghostbusters as a reminder that gender stunts with genre properties can fall flat. But the success of Wonder Woman has been a lighting-rod moment for a female “super-empowerment” craze.

Building on the buzz surrounding the upcoming “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Sony Pictures is looking at ways to continue its expansion of the animated franchise. The studio is planning a Spider-Verse sequel that will continue Miles Morales’ story, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap. Joaquim Dos Santos, whose recent credits include Netflix’s “Voltron” series, has been tapped to direct the sequel.
The studio is also looking for other spin-offs, and one that is gaining traction is a Spider-Women film that will focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers. Though no decisions have been made, one of these characters could very well be Spider-Gwen, a breakout character from the Spider-Verse. Bek Smith will write the screenplay.

Spider-Man’s web of movies is about to grow. Sony Pictures is already developing a sequel and spinoffs to its upcoming animated film, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
The announcement comes more than two weeks before “Into the Spider-Verse” hits theaters. Though the latest Spidey project launches on Dec. 14, the studio is moving ahead with installments, citing “incredible buzz.”
Amy Pascal will produce, and it’s likely that Marvel Studios founder Avi Arad and “Spider-Verse” producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will also be involved. Sony said it is planning a “Spider-Verse” sequel that will continue Miles Morales’ story.
The studio is also looking for other spinoffs, and one that is gaining traction is a Spider-Women film that will focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers. Though no decisions have been made, one of these characters could be Spider-Gwen from the Spider-Verse. Bek Smith will write.

Though Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still a little over two weeks away from reaching cinemas, it seems that Sony already has plans for where to take things from here, with Deadline reporting that an animated Spider-Women project is on the way.
The film is said to focus on three generations of female characters with Spidey abilities, one of which looks likely to be Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Verse heroine Spider-Gwen. With a script penned by Bek Smith, the movie will be produced by Amy Pascal, with Avi Arad, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller all likely to be involved. And for those hoping to see a little more action from Miles Morales, the Spider-Verse lead is also said to be getting a separate sequel of his own.

Screen Masculinity
For almost a year, Graffiti with Punctuation editor Blake Howard and I have been discussing doing a series of essays about a topic of mutual interest - portrayals of masculinity on screen. The aim is to explore our favorite elements of the topic, to get quite personal and to come up with something hopefully compelling.
We've now begun that journey over the next few months starting with the first piece by Blake. It took him to some challenging places, but the result is intimate, passionate, complex and ultimately wonderful and sets a tone for promising reading to come. I urge you to check out the piece in our features section, or by clicking here and to leave feedback on it if possible.
