The Goldbergs is like an explosion of awesome nostalgia, which is why I love watching it so much. Most of the episodes are inspired by films, TV shows, and other pop culture greatness from the '80s.
Some of the episodes were inspired by films such as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Say Anything, A Christmas Story, Knight Rider, Misery, and Commando. It was also recently announced that there will be a Karate Kid episode, which is sure to be a blast!
IGN is now reporting that Kevin Smith is set to direct an episode of the series, and the theme will be based around Tim Burton's classic 1989 film Batman! The episode will be titled "The Dynamic Duo," and when talking about it, Smith said:

ABC's The Goldbergs is easily one of the funniest, most entertaining shows on TV right now. It's an explosion of '80s nostalgia, and since it's been on the air it has themed episodes inspired by some of our favorite classic films. Some of those films include The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Dirty Dancing, The Goonies, Say Anything, A Christmas Story, Knight Rider, Misery, and Commando.
I've been saying since they started that they had to do an episode inspired by The Karate Kid, and I'm excited to say that it's finally happening! With a show like this, it was only a matter of time. Don't forget, Barry has always had a love for martial arts, and during Erica's talent show in season one he showed off his skills with the iconic crane kick. EW offers the following story details on the episode:

The late Ingmar Bergman is best known for films such as “Fanny and Alexander,” “Smiles Of A Summer Night” and “Wild Strawberries,” among many others. With a career spanning over 60 years, he’s recognized as one of the most accomplished and influential auteurs of all time.
Many cinephiles know about his work and films, but there’s one in particular that was unknown to many, until now.
According to Reuters, a previously unknown script written by Bergman for a collaboration with Akira Kurosawa and Federico Fellini, titled “Sixty-Four Minutes With Rebecka,” will be turned into a movie by Swedish director Suzanne Osten.

The screenplay, written in 1969, was shelved after the project fell through and later found in the early 2000s when Bergman donated his collections to set up what would be the Ingmar Bergman Foundation. The “highly intense” story revolves...

For a while it seemed as if Two Tongues was nothing more than a one-off. Formed by Say Anything’s Max Bemis and Saves The Day’s Chris Conley, Two Tongues was established as a means of collaborating in-between obligations to their other bands. In 2009 they released an album and, aside from playing some of the songs live here and there, that seemed to be the extent of the project’s life. But on October 14, Equal Vision Records will release Two Tongues Two, which will be followed by the band’s first proper tour.
The A.V. Club is premiering “Scorpio” below, which shows just how much has changed within the project since its self-titled debut. While Two Tongues skewed poppy, Two Tongues Two goes scuzzy. “Scorpio” is built on blown-out power chords, a garage-punk stomp, and a murkier outlook than what Bemis or Conley are regularly known ...

Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?
In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.
Given that much is written about movie executives, without actually digging much deeper to find out who they actually are, I thought it was worth tracing what happened to these ten, and – 26 years later – whether Premiere was correct in saluting them as the future of the industry. So, er, I did...

Didn't anybody ever tell Soso that assuming makes an ass out of "u" and me?
After seeing a little more into her past, you'd think she would have managed to pick that one up on her own, even if her mama never told her. Maybe her short lived break up with Poussey on Orange is the New Black Season 4 Episode 3 will hammer that lesson home.
While Soso tried to be her own hero, Taystee rocked her promotion, Red clashed with Judy King, and Caputo finally accepted that he's a company man now. Piper's attempts to be la jefa became more absurd, and more obviously a cover for her own insecurity.
Poussey and Soso are basically the best at the start of "(Don't) Say Anything," but it's really hard to disagree with Judy King's assessment of their relationship. Things did advance too quickly, probably for a number of reasons, not the...

With great writing, a strong cast and a gripping story, Jack Thorne’s 2011 supernatural drama The Fades was one of the best…
According to former BBC Three controller Zai Bennett, fans of The Fades have themselves to blame for Jack Thorne’s superb fantasy drama not being recommissioned. We were too few and too old.
The BBC Three remit aimed to attract 16-34 year olds, Bennett explained at the 2012 Edinburgh International Television Festival. Because The Fades found more love among those with mortgages and middle-age spread than it did with fresh-faced teens and twenty-somethings, it didn’t fulfil that remit.
However much critical acclaim (plaudits from The Guardian, The Telegraph, some website called Den Of Geek) or however many awards (a Bafta for Best Drama, nominations for Best Writer, wins for Best Music and Digital Effects) The Fades received, the kids weren’t down so it had to go.

Have you ever wondered if there was ever a mutant who failed at Xaviers School for the Gifted. We can all assume that Wolverine failed his classes because he probably never went and Cyclops had straight A's. Marvel has announced that they are going to explore this idea in a five part series starting in January.
Marvel is pleased to present your first look inside X-men: Worst X-man Ever #1, the new series written by Say Anything frontman Max Bemis (A+X) with artist Michael Walsh (Secret Avengers, Hank Johnson: Agent of Hydra)! Bailey Hoskins has just discovered he is a mutant. For someone who’s never been special, never stood out, discovering he’s “gifted” is truly a gift. And with that gift comes the most exciting opportunity of all – entry into the hallowed halls of Xavier’s School for Gifted Children and into the ranks of the world-famous X-Men!

Details below on a new crowdfunding campaign from filmmakers Angela Tucker and Lauren Domino for a film titled "Paper Chase," which is inspired by teen comedies from their youth (like "Sixteen Candles" and "Say Anything"), most which were devoid of black characters, or relaying some specific "black experience." The filmmakers have set up a Kickstarter campaign to raise $50,000, and with just over a day to go (as of the time of this post), they've raised most of it, or around $40,300. So they need to raise another $9,700 or so in the next 26 hours (as of the time of this posting) for the campaign to be successful. So, in the interest of...

We love teen movies. We’ve seen everything from Say Anything to Whatever It Takes, Pretty In Pink to Drive Me Crazy. Name a teen movie that was in theaters and chances are we’ve seen it twice. But while we love these films we were always taken aback by the lack of diversity. Though Kid and Play and films like House Party and Class Act shook things up by adding some brown faces to the teen movie mix, it is still bleak out there. This void inspired us to make our own teen movie Paper Chase. Paper Chase is a comedy […]...

Katie Holmes needs to beef up her vocabulary before her next “Tonight Show” appearance. The “Ray Donovan” actress appeared on the NBC show Thursday and played a game of Say Anything with host Jimmy Fallon. The game was simple: The two take turns saying random words, and the first person to stumble, blank or repeat a word gets a piece of tape stuck on their face. Holmes started off fine, but stumbled early on in the first round. As a result, Fallon was allowed to put a piece of tape right across her nose. See video: Jake Gyllenhaal Gets the Taste Slapped Out.

First up, "Dawson Creek" star, Katie Holmes (sorry, this is forever how we will identify her), who stopped by "The Tonight Show" to play "Say Anything" with Jimmy Fallon. Basically, they took turns saying words at each other and she ended up covered in tape. Excellent.
Don't worry, Jimmy Fallon performed "Desire" with U2 at Madison Square Gardens and it was fabulous. But what's really amazing is that he self-identified as "Singer with a Broken Finger."
Over on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Meghan Trainor stopped by and a) was surprisingly hilarious, b) delivered a great impression of her brother's drunk girlfriend, and c) lives with her siblings in some rented mansion.

HitFix's recent spate of "Best Year in Film History" pieces inevitably spurred some furious debate among our readers, with some making compelling arguments for years not included in our pieces (2007 and 1968 were particularly popular choices) and others openly expressing their bewilderment at the inclusion of others (let's just say 2012 took a beating). In the interest of giving voice to your comments, below we've rounded up a few of the most thoughtful, passionate, surprising and occasionally incendiary responses to our pieces, including my own (I advocated for The Year of Our Lynch 2001, which is obviously the best). The 27-year-old stunned on the late night show in a black mini dress, with gorgeous side swept hair and natural make up. But the blonde beauty was really there to have some fun with the host and play one of his silly games. "We're about to play a fun silly game that all the kids around the office are playing. Blake Lively and Jimmy Fallon got ridiculously silly on The Tonight Show. The actress joined Jimmy while promoting her new movie, The Age of Adaline, on Tuesday, and it didn't take long for the duo to get giggly. During a game of Say Anything, Blake had the chance to wrap Jimmy's face with tons of tape. The adorable actress had quite the reaction to Jimmy's new look, compelling Jimmy to tell her, "No snorting!" Released just four years after 1995's disarmingly smart Clueless became a teen sleeper hit, 10 Things I Hate About You shared some of its sly, sidelong perspective on high school dynamics, not to mention its literary pedigree. Today marks 16 years since the film's Us release date, meaning 10 Things has officially come of age, but its modern day screwball romance and salty humour hasn't aged a day.
Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew is a less widely-read source text than Jane Austen's Emma, and 10 Things is by necessity a looser adaptation than Clueless - Shrew's much-discussed ending, which concludes that women must learn to be subservient to their husbands, wouldn't fly even as irony in the present day.
Only the skeleton of Shakespeare's plot remains, and proves just how timeless the rom-com conventions which he originated have become. The overprotective father of pretty, popular high schooler Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) forbids her from dating...

Matthew Weiner has always been more comfortable talking about the past of “Mad Men” rather than letting anyone know anything about the future — even when that future is only seven episodes long, starting Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. Having spent enough time over the years asking Weiner questions that he responded to with a very guarded, “Well, you’ve got to watch,” I knew enough to focus as much on the past as possible when we recently sat down for an hour-long interview to discuss the end of his Emmy-winning baby. We talked about the last days of production, looked back all the way to the show’s origins when Weiner was a staff writer on “Becker” looking for a different kind of career in television, the show’s long acting Emmy drought, and more. And I made it almost to the end without a single “You’ve got to watch.

There are plenty of films about the troubles and triumphs of love in the '80s teen movie canon. Say Anything taught dudes about the importance of grand romantic gestures. Sixteen Candles showed ladies that just being yourself is more than enough to land Jake Ryan. Ferris Bueller's Day Off taught both genders that life moves pretty fast, and we should all stop and look around with our best friends and significant others once in a while. But when we think about cinematic tales of teen romance, The Breakfast Club usually isn't the first movie to come to mind. Well,...

It's not child's play anymore. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's former live-in nanny, Simonette DaCosta, is taking the estranged couple to court.
According to documents filed in a Manhattan federal court on Wednesday, DaCosta is claiming that she worked "well over" 100 hours a week looking after Carey and Cannon's fraternal twins, Moroccan and Monroe, but was not compensated for overtime. She is seeking $100,000 in damages.

The couple's former nanny claims she traveled with Carey and the twins and during her 24-hour shifts, she was not given "any entitlement for breaks, for meals and even for sleep."
DaCosta alleges she was fired by Carey who berated her for "exhibiting too much affection towards her children."
Carey, 44, has admitted to having a high turnover rate of nannies in her home. "I fire nannies like this,” she told New York hip-hop radio station Power 105.1, snapping her fingers. "I hate doing...

At first, BoJack Horseman is a fairly simplistic, consistently clever little satire of Hollywood superficiality, a familiar story told through the lens of the absurd world it was set in. BoJack, a former 1990s sitcom actor (on the long-running, thoroughly mediocre Horsin’ Around) and current washout, partied and philandered around his mansion and La, consistently surrounded by reminders of who he once was; from “Chapter One” to the season’s seventh episode “Say Anything”, BoJack is a series of well-trodden stories about a horse-man’s mid-life crisis as he tries to explore the most successful (and darkest) periods of his life with the ghost writer of his memoir, Diane (a woman he’s slowly falling in love with, as well). However, the last five episodes of BoJack‘s first season take a sharp left, abandoning most of the slapstick humor and silly, slightly vulgar B-plots for a very serious character...

October is generally a jam-packed month when it comes to movies. The Oscar season push is just beginning, and there are so many great horror movie marathons on TV and at your local Cineplex. That's not even counting all the stuff on Netflix Instant! Well, Netflix is a fickle master, and a whole bunch of awesome movies will be removed from its streaming service on November 1st. Here are just a few highlights. You can still rent these on DVD, but then you have to wait for the mail, and who needs that? (Curious as to what movies and TV shows are coming to Netflix in November? Here's a list.)

Two more adaptations have been added to the list of TV series based on films. EW can confirm that a script has been ordered by The CW for a show based on the 2006 film The Illusionist, which starred Ed Norton as the titular character. The project is being written by Mark Hudis and executive produced by Ben Silverman and Bob Yari. The show comes from CBS Television Studios, Electus, and the Yari Film Group. The TV adaptation would transplant the film from its Vienna locale to turn-of-the-20th-century New York, where a renowned illusionist has returned to his home after a 10-year stint in prison.

Boyhood
Written and directed by Richard Linklater
USA, 2014
Artistic intent is an often-debated mode of dissecting a finished product. What the artist went into the project intending to render presumably dictates the manner in which we, as audience members and general consumers of art, perceive. With film, it’s also common conception that, once the piece is finished and released into the world, 50% of its production now lies in the hands of the audience. The thought is that a movie doesn’t fully exist without someone to watch and perceive it. Both concepts are true, while neither holds predominant sway over the reception of art. What we go into an experience knowing, or not knowing, can drastically alter our perception of any given event. But while in the moment of interpretation, we are subject to a series of perceptions that exist independently of pre-defined knowledge.

Welcome to Sweden Review
NBC is rolling the dice on an idea that not only has long odds, it has the potential to alienate a large portion of the target demographic. That’s not quite as bad as it sounds, because the alienation only comes by way of a potential nepotism backlash, and the public is somewhat immune to paying attention to such things, unless someone stirs them up about it.
Welcome to Sweden is a sit-com that is ostensibly based on Greg Poehler’s real experience as a New Yorker who moves to Sweden to live with his girlfriend. Because his sister, Amy, makes several cameo appearances in the show, there’s every chance that the “the way to get a sit-com is to wait until your sister gets one…,” theory might not sit well with some audiences. Audiences are picky bastards, and are made up of members who...

Endless Love Blu-ray Youthful love is a common trope in cinema, and when done correctly, can feel timely, eternal and touching. When not done correctly, it can end up like the 2014 remake of Endless Love, a tale of two lovebirds that consistently feels aged, stilted and inappropriate. Endless Love stars Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde as David and Jade, two high school seniors who barely know one another. Jade.s a lot like Say Anything.s Diane.she.s close to her family but barely rates on the high school popularity scale. However, David.s quite enthralled with her and does what he can to expand her world, even though she.s from the upper crust and he.s from a blue collar family. While Pettyfer and Wilde actually capably bring an affection to the screen, the stock characters and unfortunate dialogue don.t compare well with today.s teen...

How I Met Your Mother is known for many things: A sweet love story, a surprisingly heavy mythology for a comedy, an episode structure that gives fans one tiny morsel of information about twice a year, etc.
But one of the most enjoyable aspects about the long-running comedy is its ability to coin catchphrases that speak to some real issues in the modern world. I mean, how would we solve disputes without Slap Bets? (Relax. Rhetorical question. You shouldn’t slap people in the face.)
Below are 11 of our favorite phrases the show has introduced over its nine seasons. Which...

Heading home after a successful session, Justin Timberlake made his way out of a recording studio in La on Friday (March 21).
Exiting in casual duds, the "Suit & Tie" song star sported a black beanie with a striped button down and jeans, pointing at the cameras, and throwing a quick thumbs-up as he turned his back.
In related news, the 33-year-old is currently looking for the lucky couple who got engaged to one of his songs on the Long Island Rail Road.
Hoping to find the couple as part of a mini documentary about finding love, Justin released a brand new video for his song, "Not A Bad Thing," and the video's narrator states, "It was a crisp, cold Sunday night on a Long Island Rail Road train speeding towards New York City. Frozen's hit ballad "Let It Go" is no longer just a song - it's a phenomenon. Every day another sparkling, fan-made rendition seems to appear on the Web. And now Funny or Die has released a video proving that the catchy tune makes a suitable soundtrack to almost any movie. Backed by Idina Menzel's vocals, Easy Rider becomes a road-trip flick reminiscent of Britney Spears's Crossroads. Plenty of other famous films get a feel-good jolt from the Frozen song. "Let It Go" appears to have a beat Pulp Fiction's John Travolta can dance to, and one...

For his feature film debut, up-and-coming director Mac Carter gives us his own spin on various familiar haunted house tropes in the “better than its bland name would suggest” supernatural thriller Haunt.
It’s opening, ripe in self-awareness that we’re all more than familiar with every kind of supernatural story under the sun these days, establishes early that while Haunt may not be necessarily the most original horror movie you’ll see this year, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a well-crafted, finely executed and highly enjoyable one all the same.
Haunt begins by setting us up with a backstory to its tale, creating an early sense of tension after we witness a grieving man, desperate to make contact with his deceased family, unleashes something far more dangerous than he could possibly imagine via a mysterious box that can communicate with the dead. The story then catches...
