Christopher Golden, Tim Lebbon, and Peter Bergting, the creative team behind last year's stunning illustrated prose horror novella Festival, reunite for the new horror comic series Mortal Terror! A complete reinvention of Dracula, Golden and Lebbon write the series with art by Bergting, colors by Chris O’Halloran, and letters by Clem Robins.
"Vampires Jonathan Harker, Lucy Westenra, and Mina Murray live in underground London, trying to keep the undead city safe from the rumored mortals above who seek to give them life, only to kill them. The mockbuster industry is a fascinating entity. Chief among the studios that specialize in mockbusters (ie. low-budget knockoffs of popular studio titles) is The Asylum, the company behind the "Sharkando" films. In 2023 alone, The Asylum has released a riff on "Cocaine Bear" titled "Attack of the Meth Gator," the latest installment in its "Transformers" ripoff franchise, "Transmorphers: Mech Beasts," and its own animated version of "The Little Mermaid" featuring the voices of Steve Guttenberg and "E.T." star Dee Wallace. And they say cinema is dead!
Shane Van Dyke, the grandson of acting legend Dick Van Dyke, got his start as a writer on the mockbuster circuit, penning films like "Titanic II," "Paranormal Entity," and "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" for The Asylum in the late aughts. Around that same time, he also teamed up with his brother, Carey Van Dyke, to co-pen the studio's "Street Racer" -- a riff on the "Fast & Furious" films,...

The Silence – directed by John R. Leonetti – is the latest Netflix horror released with zero prior knowledge and fanfare for its consumers.
The film stars Stanley Tucci, Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto to name a few, as a family fighting a monstrous newly emerged enemy and to add insult to injury mysterious religious cult. If you’ve seen Bird Box or A Quiet Place you’ve already had the pleasure – or displeasure depending on your disposition – of seeing this underwhelming semi-horror protocol. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka impresses in a film that has little bite or intrigue, with very little emotional engagement or even horror elements for that matter.

The Silence, Netflix's answer to A Quiet Place, is fine in fits and spurts but mostly uninspired.
Sensory-based horror? So hot right now.
Netflix should know as well as anyone that the key to financial and cultural success in the horror realm is to choose one of the five senses…and then take it away. According to the streamer, approximately 96 trillion people watched the Sandra Bullock-starring Bird Box last year, in which characters were forced to avert their eyes lest they behold Eldritchian terrors that would drive them insane and suicidal.
Now Netflix is back with another sense-based post-apocalyptic project. In The Silence, based on a 2015 book of the same name by Tim Lebbon, a colony of bat like creatures has been unleashed upon the world and is ready to rip to shreds anyone unlucky enough to raise their voice above a whisper. "Entire regions of the country are being wiped off the map." The apocalypse comes in the form of bat-like creatures that hunt by sound in the trailer for the new movie The Silence, coming to Netflix on April 10th.
Although featuring an apocalyptic, sound-based concept similar to 2018's A Quiet Place, The Silence is actually based on Tim Lebbon's 2015 novel of the same name.
Directed by John R. Leonetti (Annabelle) and written by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke (based on Lebbon's novel), The Silence stars Stanley Tucci, John Corbett, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto.
Synopsis: "When the world is under attack from terrifying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, 16-year old Ally Andrews (Kiernan Shipka), who lost her hearing at 13, and her family seek refuge in a remote haven. But they discover a sinister cult who are eager to exploit Ally’s heightened senses.

There are a lot of amazing horror movies coming to Netflix in April, but the one we're most excited about is The Silence.
The streaming platform's latest original film is directed by Annabelle's John R. Leonetti and will have fans of A Quiet Place either loving or rolling their eyes at its plot: the world is under attack from bloodthirsty, flying creatures who hunt their human prey by sound, and 16-year-old Ally (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka), who lost her hearing at 13, has to seek shelter with a sinister cult to escape the monsters.
The movie is actually based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by writer Tim Lebbon, which came out in 2015. The adaptation will also star Stanley Tucci as Ally's father and Miranda Otto as her mother, while John Corbett, Kate Trotter, and Kyle Breitkopf make up the rest of the cast. Watch the...

‘The Silence’ Trailer: Flying Monsters Are Hunting Kiernan Shipka and Stanley Tucci by Sound — Watch
“The Silence” is capitalizing on the latest trend for post-apocalyptic stories with creatures that prey on humans by curtailing basic functions. First there was “A Quiet Place,” in which John Krasinski and Emily Blunt had to evade blind extraterrestrial creatures with an acute sense of hearing. Then came the Netflix movie “Bird Box,” where Sandra Bullock had to blindfold herself so that she could avoid looking at creatures with the ability to drive a person to suicide.
Now, Netflix is combining all of these elements and throwing in some of its go-to stars for an extra synergistic push. In the movie, flying critters who kind of look like bats have destroyed the world by going after humans if they make any sound. That’s a familiar premise! The film also pulls from its Netflix stable of stars, including “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actors Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto and “To...

Netflix movie The Silence showcases a family’s struggle to survive in a world overrun by carnivorous bats.
The Silence may be coming to the Netflix table with a horror premise that’s likely to evoke accusations of derivativeness, since it appears to be amalgam of two recent genre successes in A Quiet Place and Bird Box. However, the film has a bit of an alibi, since it’s based on the acclaimed 2015 novel of the same name by British horror novelist Tim Lebbon; meaning that, in the very least, its story pre-dates the zeitgeist explosion of those two films.
Regardless, The Silence showcases the ordeal of a family struggling to survive the onset of an apocalypse scenario in which the world is under attack by bat creatures; a survival scenario that – due to the sensitive, sonar-based hearing of bats – necessitates silence at all times, lest one...

Thankfully it’s not the undead Count prepping for a local blood forage. Arrangements are underway for the third International Vampire Film and Arts Festival (also known as VampFest). The event is “an intense four day programme of film screenings, performance art, book readings, product launches, Q&As, seminars, workshops, networking events and lots of parties”, all based within the actual birthplace of Vlad Tepes (Aka the Impaler).
New films from all over the world will be screening, including Ghost Dog Films’ Crucible of the Vampire (with writers and producer in attendance), Denise Castro’s Dracula and Rose of Blood. From the falling of snow in White to the fierce galactic battles in the Alien vs. Predator Rage War trilogy, Tim Lebbon has consistently found ways to tap into readers' minds and crank up the terror switch to fun and frightening levels. A frequent contributor to anthologies, Lebbon is part of the star-studded author lineup behind Dark Cities, and with the new anthology now out from Titan Books, we've been provided with an excerpt from Lebbon's short story "In Stone" to share with Daily Dead readers.
Dark Cities: "In shadowy back alleys, crumbling brownstones, and gleaming skyscrapers, cities harbor unique forms of terror. Here lie malicious ghosts, cursed buildings, malignant deities, and personal demons of every kind.
Twenty of today’s most talented writers bend their skills toward the darkness, creating brand-new tales guaranteed to keep you awake at night— especially if you live in the dark cities.

For fans of Alien and/or Predator, you may already know that author Tim Lebbon has returned with another novel. It begins with Predator – Incursion: The Rage War 1. The Rage War is the first in a novel trilogy written by Lebbon (who previously wrote Alien: Out of the Shadows) consisting of the novels Predator: Incursion (released on October 20, 2015), Alien: Invasion, and Alien vs. Predator: Armageddon.
When Predator spacecraft begin entering human space in alarming numbers, headed toward Earth, the Colonial Marines assume it’s an invasion and launch a full military response. Then when they discover the presence of Xenomorphs, they realize the threat is more catastrophic than anything they could have imagined!
As a fan of Lebbon’s previous work and the entire Alien/Predator franchise, I can safely say that Lebbon has done another fine job with the suspense and dread that the movies provided. You would...

Is Nicolas Cage chasing a ghost?
Where do films begin? Sometimes they’re just an idea, a discussion between friends, something that gets gradually rounded out and is always intended for the screen. Sometimes they’re screenplays created out of whole cloth and touted round the studios for years in the hope that somebody will bite. Often, they’re independent works of fiction – novels or short stories – and that’s the case with Pay The Ghost, which stars Nicolas Cage and Sarah Wayne Callies and is released on DVD this week. We spoke to Tim Lebbon, the original author, about the experience of having his work adapted for the big screen.
“I wrote the short story about 15 years ago for an American anthology,” he says. “Then some time later I got a call from Ian Levy at Midnight Kitchen Productions. It did come out the of blue. He said he was interested in it so.

All Sallow’s Eve: Edel Gets Stuck in the Cage
For those who had a modicum of hope that German director’s Uli Edel‘s Canadian production of Nicolas Cage horror thriller Pay the Ghost would be more serviceable than its inane title would suggest, abandon hope all ye who enter here. Based on a novella by Tim Lebbon and adapted by Dan Kay (who last penned the 2007 indie yokel horror film Timber Falls), it’s one of those unfortunate genre cheapies that takes itself too seriously to be appreciated even for a bit of camp value—a missed opportunity considering Cage is headlining.

Actor Nicolas Cage is returning to the horror genre, an area he previously explored with films such as The Wicker Man, in his latest feature.
Titled Pay The Ghost, the film is directed by Uli Edel, with a screenplay from Dan Kay, who adapts the story from the novella by Tim Lebbon. Cage is joined onscreen by Sarah Wayne Callies, Veronica Ferres, and Lyriq Bent.
The film’s synopsis is as follows.
A professor frantically searches for his son who was abducted during a Halloween parade.
While the logline makes the feature sound like a drama or a thriller, the trailer plays up what appear to be the film’s supernatural elements. This is Cage’s second theatrical release this year, following The Runner, and he will appear on the big screen one more time before the year’s out, in Oliver Stone’s Snowden.

Ah Nicolas Cage. By this point it's fairly common knowledge that the actor has a spending problem that's put him seriously in the red so that along with the great work he's been doing over the last few years, there have also been some not-so-great movies. A lot of them. Pay the Ghost appears to be (one of) the latest.
Based on a novel from Tim Lebbon, Pay the Ghost stars Cage as a man who loses his son at the country fair on what appears to be Halloween night. As it turns out, there might be a supernatural angle to the abduction and now Cage and his wife-on-film, played here by former "The Walking Dead" star Sarah Wayne Callies, are not only dealing with the loss of their child but a supernatural entity that is causing them all sorts of additional heartache.

Lakeshore Records will release the Pay The Ghost – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on September 18th. The album features the film’s original score by Joseph LoDuca (Spartacus, Ash Vs. The Evil Dead). “There are three aspects to my music for Pay The Ghost that made the experience memorable,” said LoDuca. “I am pleased with the result of my close collaboration with Uli Edel (director) on a horror/thriller score that relied primarily on electronic sound. Over several sessions together, creating dark atmospheres with a gnawing sense of tension was our primary objective.”

In a land overrun by ruthless creatures that hunt by sound, even the faintest whimper can lead to your death in Tim Lebbon's The Silence, a new horror novel hitting shelves later this month. Titan Books has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from Lebbon's latest to share with Daily Dead readers, and we also have a look at two recent 31 images revealed by Rob Zombie, as well as details on the zombie series, Fight of the Living Dead, which is now available to watch in its entirety on BlackBoxTV.
Tim Lebbon's The Silence: "In the darkness of a underground cave system, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed... Swarming from their prison, the creatures thrive and destroy. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death. As the hordes lay waste to Europe, a girl watches to see if they will cross the sea.
