Tom Waits joins the voice cast of The Monster of Nix, a Dutch animated musical about Willy, “a troubled boy who fights the destructive force of an all-devouring monster in the village of Nix.” The Monster of Nix is a 30-minute animated musical by artist/filmmaker Rosto. Rosto also wrote the music for the film and the score which features contributions from the Dutch Metropole Orkest, long-running experimental band The Residents and French indie band The Dø.

About a month ago, I wrote up info on a Dutch animated short called The Monster of Nix, which was notable for (a) some really wild character designs [1], and (b) the fact that Terry Gilliam and Tom Waits are voicing characters. It kinda flew under the radar, so here's another chance to check it out. A new teaser clip has appeared for the film, and it features the voice of Tom Waits as a very strange bird. Check it out below. The first teaser clip that was released (see the post linked above) didn't look great, but this one has me locked in. I love it. Recapping what we know about the film, artist/director Rosto directs, and The Monster of Nix is an animated musical about Willy, “a troubled boy who fights the destructive force of an all-devouring monster in the village of Nix.” Tom Waits voices Virgil, “a terrifying giant pitch-black swallow,...

Tom Waits and Terry Gilliam are set to provide voices for a 30-minute short called The Monster of Nix, by Dutch artist/director Rosto. The two have worked together on a number of Gilliam's past films. Waits had a cameo in 1991's The Fisher King, his track ‘Earth Died Screaming’ was used during a key moment of Twelve Monkeys, and most recently he had a big role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

The very occasional working relationship between Tom Waits and Terry Gilliam is something that has given me great pleasure for a long time. It was a thrilling surprise when Waits played a cameo [1] in The Fisher King in 1991; Terry Gilliam then used the Waits track 'Earth Died Screaming' for a key point in Twelve Monkeys, and it all lead up to Waits' big role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Now the Gilliam/Waits partnership is on again, but with a slightly new twist: the two are providing voices for a 30-minute short called The Monster of Nix, by Dutch artist/director Rosto. The film is an animated musical about Willy, "a troubled boy who fights the destructive force of an all-devouring monster in the village of Nix." Tom Waits voices Virgil, "a terrifying giant pitch-black swallow," and Terry Gilliam is voicing the Ranger, "who locks himself up in terror in his forest cabin.
