Bengaluru, June 27 (Ians) Sunil Chhetri scored a stunning goal but a late own goal by India helped Kuwait fight back to draw 1-1 in the final Group A clash of the Bangabandhu Saff Championship 2023 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Tuesday.
In what was a high-tempo and high-tempered contest from start to finish, Sunil Chhetri’s 92nd international goal, a clinical volley put India ahead at the stroke of half-time. They came close but could not add more goals to their tally. However, an unfortunate own goal from Anwar Ali in second-half injury time put a heartbreaking and unfortunate end to India’s hopes of topping the group.
India started off aggressively, suffocating Kuwait with their pressing in the final and middle thirds. Naorem Mahesh Singh, who scored his first international goal in the previous match, was causing all sorts of trouble from the left wing.

Bhubaneswar, June 11 (Ians) Indian men’s football team head coach Igor Stimac feels that hot and humid conditions here would give hosts an advantage in their Intercontinental Cup match against Vanuatu at the Kalinga Stadium on Monday.
The host India saw off Mongolia 2-0 in their tournament opener on Friday, while Vanuatu went down 1-3 to Lebanon.
As things stand, India will confirm their place in the final on Monday itself, should they win against Vanuatu and Mongolia fail to win against Lebanon in their game.
“The weather does make a lot of impact on the pitch, but we need to be honest that we have an advantage in that sense because we’ve already trained here for more than three weeks. Bhubaneswar, June 4 (Ians) Gaining the confidence of the coach is the most important thing in a team environment and India senior men’s football team defender Akash Mishra is reaping the reward of that trust.
In the last nine matches the team has played, Mishra has missed only 12 minutes in all. Such has been his rise over the past few seasons that the 21-year-old has become India’s best option at left-back.
Head coach Igor Stimac and his trust in him has played a big role in his ascent, says Mishra.
“I think it’s a huge factor and very important for a player, especially a youngster like me, in his career when the coach trusts him to get the job done. And when that happens, even an average player becomes a great one because that gives him confidence, and he keeps pushing himself to improve every day,” says Mishra.

Imphal, March 22 (Ians) India clinched a 1-0 victory over Myanmar at the Khuman Lampak Stadium, in the opening match of the Tri-Nation International Football Tournament on Wednesday.
Given India’s dominance over their rivals for most of the outing, the scoreline would have been bigger, but missed chances combined with the luck factor kept the victory margin at the bare minimum. Anirudh Thapa, the lone goalscorer of the game, was adjudged the Hero of the Match.
A partisan crowd filled up the stands long before the match could start as the Blue Tigers put on a show that genuinely delighted the spectators of Imphal, the city organising its first-ever Senior Men’s international tie.
India’s wingers Bipin Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte looked lively from the start, as they looked to make inroads into the opposition third.
Sunil Chhetri had an early look in, as he headed a cross by Anirudh Thapa over the crossbar.

Kolkata, Sep 15 (Ians) Bengaluru Fc reached the final of the Durand Cup 2022 after beating Hyderabad Fc 1-0 in the second semifinal of the competition at the Salt Lake Stadium, here on Thursday.
An unfortunate own goal by Odei Onaindia (31′) helped Bengaluru Fc to reach the final as Hyderabad Fc had no answer to the Blues’ unshakeable defence led by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu who bedazzled their opponents with his astonishing saves to deny their each and every shot.
With this, Bengaluru Fc scripted history as they reached the final of the Durand Cup for the very first time in their club’s history. They will now face fellow Isl side Mumbai City Fc in the summit clash on Sunday.
The Yellow and Blacks were the first to get on to the attack, as a leaky pass from Sunil Chhetri made way for Halicharan Narzary to link up with Bartholomew Ogbeche, but...

Imphal Aug 30 (Ians) Reigning Indian Super League (Isl) champions Hyderabad Fc (Hfc) qualified for the quarterfinals of the 131st IndianOil Durand Cup, blowing away Neroca Fc 3-0 at the Khuman Lampak Stadium here on Tuesday.
In what was another highly impressive and professional display by Hfc in Group C, the Manolo Marquez-managed side now has three wins from three games and their top striker Bartholomew Ogbeche, who had his second brace of the tournament, also climbed on top of the highest scorer’s chart, with four goals now against his name. Australian Joel Chianese scored the third for the Isl champs in a dominating display.
The Nigerian Bart Ogbeche’s prowess in front of goal is something perhaps Indian football has rarely seen on their grounds. His sense of presence, timing and power inside the box and the quality of his finishing have been giving nightmares to defenders in India for the past few years.

Doha, June 14 (Ians) Fresh from their 2-0 win against Bangladesh, the Sunil Chhetri-led India will look to garner full points when they face Afghanistan in their last Group E match of the World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup China 2023 Qualifiers at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium here on Tuesday.
While the 105th-ranked India are out of the race for the World Cup qualification, they only need to avoid defeat against the 149th-ranked Afghanistan to confirm the third spot behind leaders Qatar (22 points) and second-placed Oman (15 points) in Group E.
India are currently on six points -- one more than Afghanistan -- and a win on Tuesday will help them enter the final round of the Qualifiers for the Asian Cup China 2023 on a high.
India's head coach, Igor Stimac, will count on the momentum generated by the 2-0 win against 'tricky customers' Bangladesh on June 7, when Chhetri scored a brace.

Doha, June 6 (Ians) The Sunil Chhetri-led Indian football team would take Bangladesh lightly at their own peril when the teams face off in the combined qualifiers for the World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup 2023, here on Monday.
The Igor Stimac-coached India did well to concede just one goal against Asian champions Qatar in the opening match of the combined tournament on June 3, and it's unlikely they will let their guard down against Bangladesh who are ranked 186th in the world, far below India's 105th ranking.
While India are out of contention in the race for the 2022 World Cup, their focus is on the Asian Cup 2023, where they have a chance to qualify, with another game against Afghanistan coming up on June 15 in Doha.

Doha, June 2 (Ians) Despite a far-from-ideal preparation, the Sunil Chhetri-led Indian football team begins its bid to qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup with a match against Asian champions Qatar on Thursday. Although it is a combined qualification tournament, combining the 2022 World Cup, India are out of contention for the game's biggest tournament.
India's other qualification matches are against Bangladesh on June 7 and Afghanistan on June 15.
There is a huge different in both the quality and rankings of the two teams. While Qatar are ranked 58th, India are 105th.
However, Indian players will draw inspiration from the last time they clashed with Qatar, in a World Cup qualifying match in 2019, at the same venue in Doha. It was a goalless draw, but the Indian team, minus an ailing Chhetri, put up a brave fight and won many hearts. It is considered one of the best results in India's recent football history.

As per the health parameters required to travel to Qatar, all the travelling players and staff have to carry with them negative test results from the Rt-pcr tests conducted in the last 48 hours. India have struggled to train for the qualifiers amid the deadly second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. Head coach Igor Stimac said that it is not the "ideal situation" ahead of the qualifiers but the team will be putting in "intense" sessions before their matches get underway.

New Delhi, March 24 (Ians) India's 15-month break from international football came after their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Oman and they will face the same team to mark their return to action on Thursday.
The match will be played at Dubai's Maktoom Bin Rashid Stadium and will be the first of two international friendlies that India will play within a week, the second being against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the same venue.
Unlike the previous fixture, however, the match on Thursday does not come with the baggage of expectation or pressure. In fact, coach Igor Stimac made it clear in the pre-match press conference that he doesn't care as much about the results in these two matches as he does about the experience that the slew of young players in the Indian team will gain from facing higher-ranked opposition in foreign conditions.

Liston Colaco, Akash Mishra, and Ishan Pandita are among 10 first-time inclusions in the list in response to their performances in the Indian Super League (Isl) this season.
"We have kept 35 players in the list as a cushion in case any player picks up an injury during the Isl playoffs," said Stimac.
The Croatian said that Brandon Fernandes, Rahul Bheke, Sahal Abdul Samad and Asish Rai do not feature in the list as they are recovering from injuries.
A preparatory camp for the two games will be held in Dubai from March 15 under head coach Igor Stimac.

New Delhi, Feb 27 (Ians) As the league phase of the Indian Super League (Isl) draws to a close on Sunday, it's time to take stock of the competition so far, played in a bio-bubble in Goa.
The Isl has always prided itself as an avenue where the best Indian talent can mix it up with quality overseas players. One man who will be buoyed by the performances he has seen from Indian players throughout the tournament will be the national team head coach Igor Stimac.
Plenty of national team regulars like Pritam Kotal, Sandesh Jhingan, Sunil Chhetri have done well in the Isl this time around. However, it would be the emergence of those on the fringes that would have gladdened Stimac's heart.

New Delhi, Dec 6 (Ians) A number of players have caught the eye after the initial rounds of the ongoing Indian Super League campaign -- one of them being Hyderabad Fc's 19-year-old full-back Akash Mishra.
The youngster, who has played every minute of the club's three games so far in his debut Isl season, recently talked about playing in the "high-quality" competition and his mindset on the field.
"It's very nice to be in the Isl. It's a big league with big teams featuring so many high-quality Indian and international players. We would watch them on TV and think of playing like them, and now, we're getting the opportunity of playing with and against them. It's a great feeling," Akash said in a candid chat with Aiff TV.
"Of course, the pressure to play well and win is always there but I don't think too much about it. My philosophy is...
